Deletion discussion about Maoist Theory of Race Relations

edit

Hello, Jasonwujiaxi,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Maoist Theory of Race Relations should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Maoist Theory of Race Relations .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Meatsgains (talk) 02:24, 16 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Are you in the process of expanding Maoist Theory of Race Relations? If so, I'd suggest moving the page to your sandbox to avoid it from being prematurely deleted. Then, once complete, you can upload the page to the mainspace. Meatsgains (talk) 02:27, 16 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi! I received a notification about this deletion. It looks like this is just a draft outline so far, so it's not ready to be made live. In general articles should be complete when they are made live, meaning that they should have notability established and most of the work completed. It's typically not a good idea to put an incomplete article in the mainspace, as this puts them at risk of deletion similar to what happened in this situation.
I also wanted to give you a word of caution about your topic. Be extremely careful with this, as this is the type of thing that could turn into more of a reflective, persuasive, or academic essay fairly easily. I'm concerned that the way this is formatted, it could be seen as original research - ie, your own research and reflections on the subject matter tied with conclusions you made on your own. Make sure that you are extremely careful. We can only include things that have been explicitly stated by an authority in a reliable source. I just wanted to give you a head's up on this. Image without license

Thanks for uploading File:Http---www.mzzjw.cn-res-Home-1009-8(24).jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|CC-by-sa-3.0|GFDL}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 06:02, 19 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Non-free rationale for File:Http---www.whydev.org-wp-content-uploads-2012-03-china.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Http---www.whydev.org-wp-content-uploads-2012-03-china.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:32, 20 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I received a notification from Marchjuly about some images you uploaded to Wikipedia. There were several issues with the images, one of which was that you appear to be uploading them as fair use and were using them in your userspace, which isn't permitted. That's something that you likely didn't know (I learned about that the hard way years ago as well), so I'm not too concerned about that at this moment since you seem to have moved your work to Maoist Theory of National Struggle - although if I move this to your userspace (and I may, as it's written more like an essay) this will be a big problem, as we can't have fair use images in the userspace. If I move it back then I will have to remove these images.

The main issue is that the images look to have been uploaded as fair use, however the uploads don't have the proper licences to show that they can be used. All images are considered to be copyrighted unless they are explicitly marked as falling into the public domain or under a compatible creative commons license. Images that don't have this - and don't have any information about their source - will be deleted. You need to be extremely careful, as a description of the image will not suffice for this. You can place a non-free image justification on these, however therein lies another issue - you have to show that the use of these images is extremely important to the article and that they aren't just there for decoration. Basically, the image would have to be directly referenced in the work itself and be such an integral part that the article would be lesser without it. This can be very difficult to justify and it's far more common for articles to not have an image than to have one. The rules for what is considered to be fair use are that difficult. The images being historical will not suffice by itself.

You also need to be careful about how the images are named, as the current names aren't really all that feasible. Something like "On the Kangzang Plateau, 1955" would be good, however using the website in the image name isn't a good idea as it's unwieldy and can also be seen as a little bit of a promotion for the site.

Now that said, the Chinese posters may be in the public domain under the license at File:We must liberate Taiwan(1958).jpg, where it states:

"This image is now in the public domain in China because its term of copyright has expired. According to copyright laws of the People's Republic of China (with legal jurisdiction in the mainland only, excluding Hong Kong and Macao) and the Republic of China (currently with jurisdiction in Taiwan, the Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, etc.), all photographs and cinematographic works, and all works whose copyright holder is a juristic person, enter the public domain 50 years after they were first published, or if unpublished 50 years from creation, and all other applicable works enter the public domain 50 years after the death of the creator."

If you can show that this is the case with these images, they may be able to be kept. I'm not sure if the watermark at the bottom of the image is OK or not, so I will ping Marchjuly to answer that question. However even if they're kept you will still need to show that they warrant being in the article and that they're not just there for looks. You also need to be careful about the news photo - that may still be copyrighted, if the newspaper is still active.

I would also like for you to go over the module on contributing images and media before progressing further, thanks. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:57, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • On a side note, I am concerned that the article Maoist Theory of National Struggle is written in more of a persuasive essay style than an encyclopedia article, especially as there are large chunks of content that are unsourced. The sourcing that is in the article is incredibly sparse. For example, this sentence comes across as original research:
" The amalgamation of Mao's two separate theories of revolution signifies his theoretical departure from the general doctrine of Marxism-Leninism in Soviet Union and in Europe, which strictly held the economic-determinist ideal that base determines superstructure."
This claim is completely unsourced and is also unattributed to any scholar, so it comes across as your own view and research on the matter. On Wikipedia we can only include information that has already been explicitly stated by authorities in reliable sources. You absolutely must attribute claims or they will be considered original research that you created. Essays and original research aren't bad things for research papers and if this were a paper it would be pretty well done, but essays go against Wikipedia's writing and editing guidelines. Thank you for the comment. I have made those changes but someone deleted my wikipage entirely. I have my work saved in sandbox mode so I will be reposting the page with modifications shortly.Jasonwujiaxi (talk) 00:04, 23 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jasonwujiaxi. Maoist Theory of National Struggle wasn't deleted; it was WP:USERFYied by Tokyogirl79 (aka Shalor (Wiki Ed)) and can now be found at User:Jasonwujiaxi /Maoist Theory of National Struggle. The reasons why Tokyogirl79 userfied the article can be found at User talk:Jasonwujiaxi/Maoist Theory of National Struggle. My suggestion is that you continue your work on that page, and blank User:Jasonwujiaxi/sandbox. It will be much easier for Shalor and anyone else interested in helping you improve the content to do so if everything is kept in one place. You can blank your sandbox by simply removing all of the content from it and then saving.
There's one very important thing that you should realize about Wikipedia. There are really no "my wikipages" on Wikipedia as explained in WP:OWN. Any page can technically be edited by anyone at anytime. Users are given a bit of leeway when it comes to stuff in their user namespace, but even those pages are not owned by the user per se. Wikipedia is a collaborative editing project where everyone is expected to pitch in to try and make Wikipedia better. So, if the stuff you're working is eventually going to be graded by your instructor, I strongly suggest that you keep it in your user namespace (and back-up on your own computer) as long as possible because content added to the article namespace is there for everyone to edit, or even nominate it for deletion if they feel it does not belong in Wikipedia. If you're university instructor FanZiben is basing you and your fellow classmates' grades upon whether you get an article added to Wikipedia, then he/she unfortunately seriously misunderstands what Wikipedia is about and you should let them know that they should get in touch with Shalor or someone else at Wiki ED asap. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:46, 23 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Watermarks

edit

Hi Jasonwujiaxi. I was pinged by Shalor (Wiki Ed) in the previous thread. Since Shalor also touched on quite a number of other topics, I'll keep the watermark stuff separate by starting a new thread. More specific details can all be found at WP:WATERMARK. In general, I think its probably a good idea for freely licensed or public domain files to have any watermarks removed , unless doing so destroys the image or the watermark is actually part of the reason the file is being used in the first place; on the other hand, they probably can be left in for non-free content unless they are so prominent that they basically make the non-free use of the image seem pointless. This is something, however, I'm not too familiar with; so, it might be a good idea to ask for further clarification at WP:MCQ regarding a specific image to get feedback from others. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:56, 21 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
