Just a heads up

I thought you might like to know that the Awards Center page has been deleted, along with its newsletter.  :(

So, where do we go from here?

To new and even more interesting projects, of course!

As announced in the newsletter, I've been preparing to co-coordinate a large collaboration/competition called Around the World. It was going to be run at the Awards Center, but since that no longer exists, the collaboration will be hosted somewhere else.

Around the World will begin July 15th as planned - it's location will be announced soon.

It'll be a blast. In the competition, participants will be helping to develop over 200 pages (drafts, which will be moved to article space once they are ready), using advanced tools to edit every single one of them!

This is going to be interesting.

And the event shall have awards which are being created specifically for it as we speak!

If you would like me to keep you informed of this and other interesting collaborations I'll be working on and/or organizing in the future, please drop me a note on my talk page, and I'll be happy to keep you in the know.

What is Around the World?

It's a collaboration!

A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!

The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia and perhaps beyond) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."

The set of pages we are working on is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.

Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.

The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than getting stuck on a single country trying to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!

For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees.  :) The energy is contagious.

And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.

The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.

Standing by to help are co-coordinators, who can lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators also use advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.

Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

I've never tried to improve an article on a musician toward GA because it's hard to find enough information to improve it that much, and it's real hard to get your hands around someone's whole musical career. I have improved 2 articles to GA (one with help and one solo), and I've done the GA review for several articles. I'd like help coach you by providing a peer review for article after you feel it's at GA level. Some advice from someone who learned the hard way: make sure that you use only top-of-the-line well-known sources for the article. If you don't, it will get picked apart if you ever try FA. Do it right in the first place. Stick with sources like major newspapers (check out the New York Times archives for an awesome source!), major music publications that everyone understands (like Rolling Stone, Billboard (magazine)), and especially books (check out google books). You'll may get grief if you use Jesus Freak Hideout as a reliable source, but you almost for sure would get grief if you use a source less well-known that jfh. Use inline citations for almost every sentence. Show chart success from Billboard (magazine) is the standard for U.S. musicians GAs & FAs (including Switchfoot), and be prepared to explain that chart success on R&R (magazine) actually is from the same company as Billboard. Can you help?

I see you were listed as a participant in the League of Copy-Editors so it seems likely. The thing is the Military history wikiproject urgently needs prose pros to help with our best articles. Milhist covers a broad range of interesting and varied subjects from film to biography, battles to weaponry, and Roman emperors to twentieth-century dictators. In Milhist, A-Class has become the last port of call before FAC and we are looking for people to help identify prose and MoS issues at A-Class A-Class Reviews and help fix them prior to featured article candidacy. We also have a copy-editing section in our Logistics Dept and that can always use experienced copy-editors. For most of our articles, you don't need to be a specialist in the subject matter, just good with words.

First, thank you very much for responding to the call. I'm sorry it's taken a bit of time to get back to you but I've got the builders in at home (and they're causing chaos) and I've got very behind.

Second, we need help on a couple of levels. we are so short of good copy-editors, partly because of the large number of Milhist articles at PR and FAC, that we're trying to concentrate on A-Class reviews and featured article candidates. I've taken the liberty of transcluding our new tracker template, listing the applicable articles. To add this to your user pages independently of this message, simply cut and paste {{WPMILHIST Copy-editing alerts}} to the required location.

A-Class - copy-tasting / reviewing

We are currently trying to improve the depth and quality of the Milhist A-Class review. What will help here considerably is copy-tasting. That is, reviewing an article and commenting on the style and prose. Clarity, longwindedness (the bane of Milhist), grammar, mixing and matching WP:ENGVAR varieties, MoS stuff (especially dashes), date formatting etc. (Any subsequent copy-editing would be a very welcome and helpful bonus!) Input on any current A-Class candidate would be helpful.

Copy-editing pre-FA and FA candidates

Editors normally take articles go from ACR to FAC, usually via a request for a copy-edit. These requests are usually made here or by leaving messages on copy-editors talk pages. You can respond to requests there or list yourself as a copy-editor so that others may contact you. Either would be very much appreciated. Additionally, a frequent reason for opposition is prose and some hands-on copy-editing of FA candidates would be enormously helpful. (If you do subsequently support the article, please do remember to disclose the copy-edit: ie Support (as copy-editor) though you may prefer simply to Comment that a copy-edit has been done.)

Matthew West move

You did the move improperly, for the edit history of the article was lost by doing the cut and paste job! The edit history is required by the GDFL. You need move articles with the move button. You are not supposed to have a peer review open when you nominate an article for GA. I would have left the PR sit a while open longer before GA nomination, but since you nominated it for GA already you should close the PR. Hey Royalbroil - Jamie asked me to comment here. I've been pretty active around GAN and to the best of my knowledge, there's no rule about having a GAN and PR up at the same time. (That rule does apply for FAC, though.) See Wikipedia talk:Good article nominations/Archive 9#Can an article be on PR and GAN simultaneously? - no 100% agreement, but the general mood concerning the status quo was that it's OK to have an article at both. I guess I must have read that at FA. I wonder if there used to be a comment about that at GA. I looked and I don't see it at GA. In any case, my mistake and I'm sorry. I believe that one should to do a GA/PR review for each GA/PR nom that someone does for you (it's good karma) and I highly recommend that you do too. I felt I shouldn't do a GA review before my first GA nomination was done so that I understood the process, so I suggest doing a GA review after this one is done. You could do a PR now. Help us with our problem. The article is September 11, 2001 attacks. Using a word to define the same word is bad. The original version is something like "The September 11, 2001 attacks was a series of...attacks."

The title of the article was the result of a long 2004 debate. The use of the title in the introductory sentence makes awkward prose and makes the article title sound like a TV episode article. See that article talk page and help!

Undo move request

Hello. Could you undo the move that you made to Swimming at the 2008 Summer Olympics – Men's 400 metre individual medley? I know that the move was probably supported by MOS, but the new name is inconsistent with a large number of other 2008 Summer Olympic event pages. Hey, I just wanted to say, despite opposing your RFA, that you seem to be doing useful work here, and I appreciate it. Mainly I think it looks like you've fallen in with the wrong crowd. Maybe it's just me, but I think things work way smoother when people separate their volunteer work at Wikipedia from their social time. Chat rooms end up making friends, yes, but enemies too. Hey there Jamie, I mentioned this on the talk page, next time you go for it, do two things: 1) Provide some strong links showing maturity. Eg show us more cases where you dealt with adversity/conflict in a mature way or help mediate others. I am not opposed to people in HS getting the bit, but (right or wrong) HS'ers have a higher barrier to overcome. They have to show that they aren't the typical HS'er. 2) I think your response to your nom demonstrated a great deal of maturity, I wish you had done it earlier, I probably would not have switched to oppose. (And don't hold it against Majorly, I've been chastised by my candidates in the past for being over eager in their defense... Noms hate to see their candidates fail due to a reason that they don't hold to be a valid one. I'm sorry to hear that your RfA has been turned into some mudslinging match of sorts. I do see potential in you that needs more time to be realized fully, and that you do stand a chance to be given the responsibility of mop and bucket. I am impressed with your temperament on your RfA despite what is going on. Age debate aside, there are some valid and genuine concerns by RfA contributors which I think will benefit you, as now you can work on these shortcomings (or perceived ones). I don't really think it really matters anymore whether you continue or withdraw your RfA as I feel that it has probably run its full course by now.

Of course it is not immediate; I am leaving it open-ended in the sense that you can ask for it when you feel that you have progressed enough for the responsibility (no fixed timetable), and I advise you if you are ready for it. I am rather light-touched in how you want to proceed from here, though I would recommend that you start on writing or/and working out on Did You Know (a strength point), and participate in Articles for Deletion (with a more critical thinking mindset). You can consider it to be like admin-coaching of sorts, although I wouldn't want to formalize matters that much. Feel free to drop me a note if you need any advice, directions or doubts answered.

I have lots of positive things to say about you that I can say from first-hand experience. This RFA has lots of bashing from people that don't know you and are assuming that your age is an indication of your abilities/attitude. I have a suggestion for you to consider on how to become more rounded. You could get involved in the WikiProject for your state. Each state's WikiProject has a list of new articles from the AlexNewArtBot. I review the Wisconsin list daily and often find problem articles which need some type of maintenace and sometimes articles slip through that should get deleted because they are blatant promotion (etc.). The list would give you a broader background with many types of articles. Your ideas with helping at DYK is good too. We can always used an experienced hand like you to fact check and certify that articles meet the DYK criteria, plus people to load articles into the next update so that admins are available for other things. Jamie, I feel bad for you. Your RfA failed in part because of factors outside of your control that have lead to an RfC. I do think you have the right temperament for an admin, but you lack experience, and you lack consensus building. In order to pass an RfA, you need one or both of these. If you are interested, I would be honored to serve as your admin coach. Before accepting, you should know a few things. First, I absolutely blew an RfA with H20 (who changed his name to Giggy). There is a long history and reading your RfA page will give you an inkling of it. Some people question my judgment, but I think most have forgiven me. Second, despite burning Giggy badly, he still says that I'm the best admin coach out there. If you are interested (and assuming your RfA fails) let me know. Fireproof

Hey, you said on IRC that you're hoping to see the movie when it comes out - I am too. I have been working hard recently to get it to DYK?. I want it to say "Did you know..... that Fireproof, a upcoming 2008 film, was allowed use of stations, trucks and crew by the Albany Fire Department in making the film?" I've done much expanding to the article, and I want to see Fireproof of the Main Page before it releases. What do you think? Is it a lost cause? I've never tried a DYK? before. Perceived rudeness

I sense rudeness from this editor after he expressed his dislike of my editing his writing and commenting on his lack of good grammar. He seems to be alluding to not being capable of doing wrong. Should I just quietly tolerate this? Here is what he said on my talk page:
