Education_Program_talk:Pepperdine_University/Personality_(PSYC_321)_(Spring_2013)/Course_description

I think you meant to make the above program in the Education Program namespace instead of the Education Program talk namespace. Could you please move it to its correct namespace? You should be able to do this by going to the top right of the page, mousing over the arrow, and clicking "Move". Then change the namespace in the box and click "Move". Thanks! Alice Eagly

Professor,

First, the WP:AFC process is for editors that choose not create a Wikipedia account and would otherwise be unable to create a new article. The sandbox template creates the false impression that the AFC process applies to registered users as well. Your students all have user accounts and can simply create the article through the process described as WP:CREATE.

In this case, User:Adoyle6 should search for an article called Alice Eagly. There isn't an article by that name yet, so at the top of the results page Wikipedia will state "You may create the page 'Alice Eagly'..." The name will be a red link (meaning it's an empty page), so Adoyle6 can simply paste in the contents from his/her sandbox and save.

Also, please move the conversation you started at Category:Question about Article for Creation to here or my talk page. This discussion does not belong on the category page you created. I'll go back and have that other page speedily deleted.

If there's a need, I can come back out to Malibu to provide a demonstration and answer questions the students have been encountering. Please let your class know they can contact me on my talk page or this class's online ambassador, User:JMathewson (WMF), as well. • You just placed barnstars on the pages of the two students of yours that have been working on Alice Eagly. Please note that the article suffers from severe problems. The sourcing is absolutely insufficient. You cannot base a biography on somebody's CV and some of their own publications. You need independent sources, otherwise it'll risk getting deleted (and justifiably so). I'm not sure whether this is your only account, because it shows a history of only 73 edits, suggesting this account is very new here itself... Please, don(t let this become another one of those class projects where students put in a lot of effort, all of which ends up being reverted of deleted as soon as they have been graded... --Randykitty (talk) 16:30, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
• Thanks for your feedback, User:Randykitty. If the students who choose to work on this assignment are underprepared for it, I take full responsibility, and based on the instruction and preparation I provided to them, I feel that their work represents a good beginning. Please keep in mind, though, that this is not the end product of their work. After these students have finished the foundations of the articles, I am going to have students work to clean up each others' work. Yesterday in class, I showed them some steps to add extra source information. So the new articles that have been created by my students are not in the shape that I anticipate them being in when the assignment is done. But your feedback on this work-in-progress is helpful for identifying the ways in which this and other articles need to be improved. But I, along with my students, am in the process of learning. This assignment is stronger than it was last year when I fumbled my way into it, and I will be able to continue to improve it in future years. Steve Rouse (talk) 16:49, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

• You should involve an experienced WP editor in this endeavor, someone with more than just a couple of thousand edits and a few years of experience. The way you are going about it now almost guarantees that some of your students are going to run into trouble here. Article creation is one of the toughest things to do on WP, especially if you don't make it clear from the beginning that article subjects meet our notability guidelines. Several of your students seem to have chosen to create biographies of psychologists. Fine, but not a single one of them makes it clear that these meet WP:ACADEMIC. For some of that, this should be fairly easy (Eagly, for example, has two honorary doctorates), but just mentioning that in the article may save them from speedy deletion as an "A7", but not from other problems. You cannot source stuff like that to their own CVs, this needs independent verification. For other bios this may be more problematic (I don't know all of these people and have no time to look into them right now) and that could lead to the embarrassing situation that somebody is going to put them up for deletion. So no biography of a living person should be created in mainspace without at least some indication of notability and some independent reliable sources. As a Personality Psychologist, I suggested these specific people to my students because I know that each one is highly influential in the field-- just as you were able to find that Eagly meets the notability standards, I am confident that the same is true about the others as well-- they are the current movers in the field, and independent verification will be easily achieved.
