Storm of the month

Typhoon Saomai nearing its landfall in China

Typhoon Saomai (known as Typhoon Juan to PAGASA) claimed at least 441 lives and caused over $1.5 billion in damage. After forming on August 4 near Chuuk, the storm brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Marianas, the Philippines, Taiwan and southeastern China. It started to intensify, and reached its official peak with winds of 95 knots (175 km/h, 110 mph) on August 9. The JTWC reported that it peaked as a Category 5 super typhoon the same day, a strength Chinese forecasters described as the most powerful to hit China in 50 years. Saomai maintained that strength until landfall on August 10 and dissipated inland the next day.

Other tropical cyclone activity

There were 16 other tropical cyclones during August, in the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

• In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Chris moved to the north of Puerto Rico before dissipating on August 5 near Cuba.
• Tropical Storm Debby formed near the Cape Verde islands on August 21 but had no effects on land.
• Hurricane Ernesto formed in the Caribbean on August 24 and affected Haiti and Cuba, before making landfalls in Florida and South Carolina. It killed at least 5 people.
• In the east Pacific, Tropical Storm Fabio dissipated on August 3 well away from land.
• Tropical Storm Gilma formed on August 1 and lasted for two days before dissipating.
• Hurricane Hector reached its peak as a Category 2 hurricane on August 18 well away from land.
• Hurricane Ileana became the second major hurricane of the east Pacific season when it reached Category 3 intensity on August 23.
• Hurricane John formed near to Mexico on August 28 and to the northwest near the coast. It prompted a series of warnings from Michoacán to Baja California Sur, where it made landfall in September.
• Hurricane Kristy was briefly a hurricane on August 31, but its proximity to Hurricane John caused it to weaken soon after.
• Hurricane Ioke became the most intense Central Pacific hurricane on record on August 26 with a minimum pressure of 920 mbar. After crossing the dateline and becoming Typhoon Ioke it passed just to the north of Wake Island at Category 4 strength.
• Typhoon Prapiroon (Henry) reached its peak as a minimal typhoon in the South China Sea. It killed 77 people when it made landfall in China.
• Severe Tropical Storm Maria formed on August 4 and threatened Japanese coast.
• Severe Tropical Storm Bopha (Inday) passed over Taiwan as a tropical storm on August 9.
• Tropical Storm Wukong passed over Kyūshū on August 18.
• Tropical Storm Sonamu (Katring) was a minimal storm that was absorbed by Wukong on August 20.
• Tropical Depression 13W formed near Hainan on August 23 and soon made landfall in Guandong.

Member of the month

Cyclone barnstar

The August member of the month is Nilfanion. The WikiProject awards this to him for his contributions in many diverse sections of the project. Nilfanion joined the Wikiproject in April and provides track maps for the project and has produced a featured picture. He has developed the tropical cyclone Commons Category scheme in the process. In addition he has produced a number of quality articles and is active in assessment.

When uploading an image of a tropical cyclone please

1. Download the highest resolution image possible to your computer, not a thumbnail.
2. If the image is free, upload it to Commons. In general, only upload to en.wikipedia if it is a Fair Use image. Wherever you upload, follow the instructions.
3. Preferably, include a link to the source image, not just the source site.
4. If you upload to Commons, add relevant Categories to the image, see the Commons category scheme. Make sure at least one category you add is the storm's category.

New 1933 Article

I think its ready now to tell you the truth. I've given all the basics plus more-grammar wise-i think its fine.

There's really one thing about Pre-1950 article naming. I think i'd rather name all Pre-1950 storms with their numbers, if the number of the storm is known. Some of the names we have are really nutsy & very little creativeness.Mitchazenia 16:25, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Updation: (The striked things are the completed ones)

# The lede should be longer and not as repetitive. "It affected Cuba as a Category 2 hurricane and affected Mexico and Texas as a Category 3 hurricane killing 179 people." You shouldn't repeat so much in one sentence (you used affected twice and Category X hurricane twice). Expand it to two paragraphs, at least.

1. You should cite the NHC's Deadliest Atlantic hurricanes, not Weatherunderground, for the casualties.

# Are the numerous pressure reports important in the storm history? Typically, the way to measure the hurricane's strength is with its maximum sustained winds. Very few people use pressure, especially when saying useless things like "At the time, Eleven was the strongest storm of the season untill the next storm became the strongest at 948 mbar". # You can't call the hurricane "Eleven". It had no name. Therefore, you'll have to call it "the hurricane" or something like that. # What does this mean? "in Hidalgo County, Mercedes" Hidalgo County, Mercedes is not a place. Furthermore, it's not needed. "The hurricane made landfall just to the north of Brownsville" will suffice. # "The system rapidly weakened as it moved through southern Texas and northeastern Mexico, and dissipated within 24 hours of making landfall over the mainland, over "The Borderline" which is the border of Mexico and Texas. The thirty-fifth and final advisory was released when Eleven was a minimal tropical storm status of 40 mph winds." You're trying waaay too hard to extend the article. The first sentence is useless, inaccurate, and poorly worded after the word "landfall". "The Borderline"? Why would you put it in quotes, and why would you include it? The term is very unofficial, and it's already implied the hurricane dissipated in northeastern Mexico. The next sentence very inaccurate. How do you know it had 35 advisories on it? For your information, the Weather Bureau issued advisories for hurricanes twice a day, and their best tracks were later extrapolated and interpolated based on more research.

1. In the preparations section, you should include when the Weather Bureau issued hurricane warnings.

# The impact section is poorly made. You should organize the impact by area, not just random collections of sentences. You need a source for "Many weak buildings were destoyed, most of them at Harlingen, Texas." Again, you use Hidalgo County, Mercedes. Typically, one uses a City, X County format. "Many businessmen who expected more severe damage were angry with the meteorologist in charge of the Corpus Christi station, though the National Weather Bureau assured the preparations were needed and saved lives. 90 percent of the citrus crop was destroyed in LRGV." needs a source. What is LRGV? You need to explain acronyms in articles and expect the user to know what they mean. It seems like the "many businessmen" part isn't impact... more like aftermath. Try and find more aftermath to make a section for it. # The trivia section should be removed. Trivia is not needed for hurricane articles. The first "trivia" fact, "The hurricane became was the fifth and final storm of the 1933 season to hit Texas, a record held on for 73 years." is very vague, incorrect, and sourceless. Taking a quick look at the best track, it was the only hurricane to hit Texas in the year, along with two tropical storms. The other trivia fact, "Hurricane Eleven ranks 10th on the list of most intense hurricanes to enter the Gulf Coast with the minimum pressure of 949 mbar (28.03 inHg). It is behind Betsy (1965), Dennis (2005), Ivan (2004), Frederic (1979), Allen (1980), Celia (1970), Audrey (1957), Opal (1995), Rita (2005), Carla (1961), Katrina (2005), Camille (1969) & several unnamed storms." is incorrect and important as well. Taking a quick look, it is twentieth on the list. Something in twentieth place doesn't deserve a mention. Mitchazenia 16:32, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

I don't know if I should be asking you this, but I am questioning Chacor's recent behaviour towards me. He claims that it is OK to treat people unfairly, which I think is very ridiculous. He continues on reverting my responses, and he says he has not once being uncivil. This is being disrespectful and discourteous. 1994 Pacific typhoon season

Saw that you started this article. I'm working on expanding it, but where'd you get the PAGASA names from? At least one ref I have conflicts your list, apparently TD-04W was named "Deling" by PAGASA but the list in the article says "Diging". – Chacor 15:03, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

I was thinking of beginning an article on Hurricane Alberto (2000). I did see the agreement of merging the article in the talk page, but that was nearly a year ago. Could you please tell me if it's now okay to create an article now? I know that the storm had little impact, but it does not matter when the storm existed or whatsoever. Hurricane Gordon two storms theory

I was intrigued by this topic when I saw it on Gordon's talk page. I made a detailed analysis you might want to read:

Based on my observations using the GIBBS imagry, it appears that Gordon was one storm. At one point north of Cuba, it does appear as though the system has two LLCCs. However, looking farther back, there doesn't seem to be any other systems active in the southwestern Atlantic until Gordon gets there. Once Gordon gets there, it seems to interact with a trough moving off the east coast of the United States. That trough shows up quite clearly in this reverse infrared image as that smaller black mass off the Carolinas north of Gordon's outer bands. Gordon had a broad circulation as it was and when it hit Cuba, weakened, and interated with that trough [1], the circulation became elongated from the northeast to the southwest [2]. This caused the storm to appear as though it had two centers. When the trough became less of an influence [3], Gordon's circulation consolidated [4]. That is my hypothesis, based on my analysis of the satellite imagry. -- §HurricaneERIC§ archive 22:39, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Storm of the month

Hurricane Ioke at peak strength

Hurricane Ioke is the most intense hurricane on record in the Central Pacific. After forming on August 19 to the south of Hawaii, Ioke moved to the northwest and hit Johnston Atoll as a Category 2 hurricane. It strengthened further as it moved to the west, reaching Category 5 strength on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale three times, twice in the Central Pacific and once in the Western Pacific. After the storm entered the Western Pacific it directly hit Wake Island. The storm finally became extratropical on September 7 but its extratropical remnants affected Alaska. Overall damage from Hurricane Ioke was light.

Other tropical cyclone activity

• 4 hurricanes formed in the Atlantic: Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Gordon, Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Isaac. Florence affected Bermuda and Newfoundland, and Gordon had effects in the Azores and Europe. Isaac is currently forecast to affect Newfoundland as an extratropical storm.
• The east Pacific saw three hurricanes and a tropical storm develop. Hurricane John and Hurricane Lane were both major hurricanes which hit Mexico, whilst Hurricane Kristy and Tropical Storm Miriam stayed clear of land. In addition, two tropical depressions formed in the Central Pacific.
• There were 4 typhoons in west Pacific during September. Typhoon Shanshan, Typhoon Yagi and Typhoon Xangsane formed in the west Pacific and Typhoon Ioke entered the basin from the east. Shanshan killed at least 9 people in Japan and Typhoon Xangsane, which is still active, killed at least 72 in the Philippines.
• Two tropical cyclones formed in the North Indian Ocean during September. Severe Cyclonic Storm Mukda formed in the Arabian Sea but did not affect land and Tropical Cyclone 05B formed in the Bay of Bengal before making landfall in India. However, the deadliest tropical system of September was a depression in the Bay of Bengal that killed more than 170 people in Bangladesh.

Member of the month

Cyclone barnstar

The September member of the month is Thegreatdr, David Roth. David Roth is a meteorologist at the HPC, who as part of his work there is producing Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Data. Dozens of the maps he has created are used in Wikipedia articles. He has produced a number of valuable articles to the project such as tropical cyclone rainfall climatology and Atlantic hurricane reanalysis, and significantly expanded several seasonal articles such as 1982 Pacific hurricane season.

1933AHS

Well, I've given it a stronger copyediting now. However, there's a few things to fix, but that I don't really have the time to do. For example, you have to remove all of the abbreviations in the references. While we understand what HPC stands for, most readers don't, so we need to make sure to spell it out within <ref> calls. Then, how can a hurricane cause 5000 deaths and 184 deaths at the same time? That didn't make much sense, so you should double-check that. Check the edit history for other examples. Also, a reading by someone who isn't familiar with the subject could help; I'll ask for it, but you could try too. Finally, reference the ACE table somehow. 2005 ACE

Haven't been here for a while. Anyway, I waited two months to see if those guys saying subtropical ACE is not counted by NOAA could prove. They didn't. I recently did an ACE Excel Spreadsheet showing ACE of all Storms of TS or higher, for all times tropical and subtropical. 2004 storms still at Start: reanalysis

I'd like you to reanalyze the following five 2004 storms that, for the most part, I wrote and all are currently at Start-class in a self-decision: Danielle, Earl, Hermine (that one you wrote but I published), Karl and Lisa. I added some to each of the pages, but I still don`t think I have enough to move them upwards. Feel free to make additions yourself or suggest them for group improvements. Something you may like to see...

Here is an awesome site. In case you haven't seen it, it's a new gallery from the NCDC of tropical cyclone movies, birth to death, since 1983. You can't just click it and see it, because it send's you to a Quicktime page that doesn't work anymore. You need to right click the link > Save link/target as... > chose an area to save it > click open. It sould work. It's worth it.
