About Me edit

Hello Wikipedians! I am a long time professional journalist. I co-wrote a 12-vol. encyclopedia on North American Indians, and I cover these issues as well as science, environment, health and technology. My interest here is to increase the visibility of Native American journalism, and science, health, and environmental journalism in general. My well researched entries and edits seek to meet scientific scholarship but in language readers can understand, as well as reduce omitted, misleading or poorly cited material -- a disservice to students, reporters and researchers needing facts and transparency. I clean up glaring errors, add citations and references, stamp out bias, and in general try to perform a useful service. I am making every effort to follow Wikipedia manners, but I keep learning. Please bear with me, I am here to help. I am part of the WP:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of the Americas.

I am dismayed to see in Wikipedia editors who project bias, propagandize, or intentionally use hot button words in areas like policy issues, human diversity, mental health and elsewhere. Professional journalists research and report objectively and without bias a full and fair accounting so readers are free to make their own judgements. We owe them the same on Wikipedia. Anything else is propaganda. I research the facts when I see cases of this.

I am easy to approach if you have questions about my edits. I ask for common courtesies. As an early Wikipedian I met with unpleasant exchanges over new entries related to Native American journalism. After attempts to resolve these failed it became worthy of a news story, which drew letters from mainstream journalism organizations, i.e. the Society of Environmental Journalists to Wikimedia's Foundation. I was told by Wikimedia head of communications Jay Walsh that Wikipedians are passionate about policies, but there are a few cases in which bias is suspect. Our news organization wassc assured Foundation members would investigate, and reinstate the twice-deleted Native American Journalists Association. Some of the unfortunate comments that follow relate to these early attempts to raise the visibility of Native American journalism.

I received an okay from the Native American Journalists Association to use their content in recreating their site after a deletion for lack of notability by nawlinwiki. Due to alleged copyright violation, I requested and received a confirmation from the Native American Journalists Association executive director, that I had permission to use their content. His letter: December 22, 2010

TO: Hochungra FROM: Jeffery Harjo, Executive Director, Native American Journalists Association RE: Update to Wikipedia entry

Hochungra has the permission of the Native American Journalists Association to post information about our organization as it appears on our website.

I am the Executive Director for the Native American Journalists Association and the Wikipedia entry is very important to keep future and current journalists informed about our organization.

Request Assistance Rob Capriccioso marked for deletion edit

My aim here is to provide better coverage of Native Americans, including Native American journalism. It took hours of research to re-write Native American Journalists Association, which had been marked for deletion, and deleted. I am in the process of adding notable Native American journalists (See Category:Native American journalists; also Category:Native American writers). The page I created for one of Indian Country's most noted Native American journalists, Rob Capriccioso is now marked for deletion. I have requested expertise and editing assistance from the WikiProject Indigenous Peoples of North America. I am seeing that Native American journalism is being marginalized on Wikipedia, while other minority journalism groups do not suffer the same. Any assistance in these efforts is appreciated, as are all constructive comments. --Hochungra (talk) 18:53, 17 November 2010 (UTC)Signed: User:Hochungra --Hochungra (talk) 18:53, 17 November 2010 (UTC)== Welcome == Hello, Hochungra, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.Reply

I notice that one of the first articles you have edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been reverted for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of deletion, you might like to draft your article before submission, then get me or any other editor to proofread it. To start creating a draft article, just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit that page as you would any other. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

The one firm rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that if more than one person is using this account to edit, then unfortunately it will be blocked from editing.

If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. User Talk edit

Thank you for your warm welcome and words of advice. I will read those entries you suggest that I have not yet read. I do not believe there is a conflict of interest; I am writing about a subject I am very familiar with, news gathering, reporting and editing. Notable Native American reporters should be added to Wikipedia, as well as a new sub-category:Native American journalists under the existing category:Journalists by nationality. Note too, Wikipedia has a category for Native American writers. There are also some fine Native American journalists of note deserving of a listing. Their listings will be useful to students and the general public. In the very near future I plan to add a two more biographical entries. I'll watch the first, to see what the requirements are as it evolves. I added references, and support for notability. <hochungraHochungra (talk) 04:41, 26 December 2009 (UTC)>/hochungra>Reply

Hi, I created Category:Native American journalists and it's ready to be populated (I added the cat to a couple articles). You don't have to request a category to be created, you can just create them yourself as needed – in the same manner that you would create an article. Happy wiki-ing! Using others to sway consensus, and conflict of interest edit

Hello. I understand your arguments regarding the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Rob Capriccioso (2nd nomination), though I disagree with them. As someone else noted on that page, it's against Wikipedia guidelines to use other editors as proxies to sway discussions like this, which is called Meatpuppetry. Something similar, Wikipedia:Canvassing, which is notifying other editors to influence the decision in one way is also frowned upon. It's also important to note that those sorts of discussions aren't a vote, the majority doesn't always win, which is why in this case it was closed as no consensus. Not saying you are doing any of that, but if you are, please don't.

Also, I don't appreciate your and User:torrenceg's comments that I am somehow biased against Rob Capriccioso because I live in DC (and that you did some research to find out that I'm also a blogger). I've never met him and I don't think I've ever read anything by him. I found the page via Category:Writers from Washington, D.C. Please Wikipedia:Assume good faith. --AW (talk) 21:47, 1 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Response to Allegations of Sock Puppetry, Meat Puppetry, Canvassing, or other edit

I created the Rob Capriccioso page, then followed it and responded to the nomination for deletion. I didn't join in with anyone. Another allegation without merit was that I was used my account for more than one name to make arguments against deletion. Fortunately an editor checked IP addresses and debunked that. Re AWiseman's criticism he didn't appreciate my investigating any bias on his part, that is what I am trained as a journalist to do. It took little research to learn AW was also a DC writer. If investigating possible bias is a violation of Wikipedia then we need to raise a discussion of transparency. This was one of my early contributions; it and another involving Native American journalism were nominated for deletion as not notable. I stepped out of further edits or arguments for the Capriccioso entry after these untrue allegations of terms I wasn't even familiar with. Note this entry has stood without my further participation. The second deletion of the Native American Journalists Association that I also challenged was rewritten and reinstated by members of the Wikimedia Foundation, and marked Do Not Delete. I hope this clears my good name. I see editing Wikipedia as a way to contribute to the public good in spite of an erratic schedule that doesn't lend to volunteer projects.

Speedy deletion nomination of Rob Capriccioso edit

Update regarding copyright concern edit

Since we do not yet have verification of permission by the processes set out above and sufficient time has passed since the placement of the notice, the article Native American Journalists Association has been deleted for copyright concerns. This deletion is not necessarily permanent. If you have already sent a letter to the Wikimedia Foundation permitting re-use under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License (CC-BY-SA) and GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (if you are not the copyright holder or have co-authored the material, release under CC-BY-SA-compatible license alone is sufficient), the article will be restored when that letter is received and processed by the Wikimedia Communications committee. Likewise, if you have not yet sent a letter, you still may (or resend it, if you believe your original may have been lost), and the article will be restored when that letter is received and processed.

As Wikipedia does not require proof of identity on account creation, it is essential that we receive external proof of authorization in order to ensure that we remain compliant with US Copyright law. It is also essential that we verify that copyright holders understand the extent of the release they are authorizing, in that our licenses permit modification and reuse in any forum, even commercial publication, as long as authorship credit is maintained and future copies are compatibly licensed.

Please note that once permission is verified, the material may be evaluated and altered to meet Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Although we appreciate donations, we cannot guarantee that material donated will be retained.
