RfA

edit

This is meant to be a friendly comment, and I sincerely hope that you will accept it in that spirit.

Your present RfA has no chance of succeeding. Editors like to see good evidence of knowledge of Wiki policy, which you can only demonstrate by producing a meaningful number of edits in the WP:NAMESPACE areas. Click on the link for clarification. You may possibly have assumed that progress to admin was an automatic sequence upon becoming an editor; I am sorry, but this is not the case, and promotion requies a significant degree of knowledge and experience in all aspects of the project.

I ernestly suggest that you withdraw your application, before the "oppose" votes become hurtful. I hope that you will keep on editing, because we need dedicated users. Please think about re-applying when you have about six months experience and something over 3,000 edits, spread over the various aspects of wikipedia. At that point, I will probably support you. But, I regret, not now.--Anthony.bradbury 21:43, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well done. Please come back later, as I suggest above.--Anthony.bradbury 21:47, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Agreed, I have seen the opposition and already withdrawn. I did kind of assumed that it will be an easy process. I thought if I become an admin, I can use the powers for good. However, at these moment to be honest I do not need to be an admin, since I do not see myself doing any more than what I already do. I think I will become an admin if an when I deserve it. Perhaps I will reapply if I feel that the time has come. Your comment taken in good spirit, thanks for leaving the polite message. Oh and good luck on your RfA :) --Hirak 99 21:59, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, both for the message and for your support. I hope that you will re-apply; the attitude shown in your comments is exactly what wikipedia needs. Get those edits in. Happy wikying.--Anthony.bradbury 22:11, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Apocalypto

edit

I'm not sure I think it's important enough to include in the entry, but if it really is easily verifiable then my objection to including the Waldo trivia becomes much less strident. I'd personally prefer it was referenced with a mention in some secondary source, rather than simply instructions on where to view the frame, however. If it or any of the other trivia is included, it should be in another section, preferable one that already exists, rather than simply creating a new one with a title like "easter egg frames" or "discontinuities"; these would be essentially a trivia section under a new name. I'd suggest putting in the production section, perhaps with a sentance like, "The producers included a few humorous references to popular culture; such-and-such a character says "I'm walking here", a famous quote from Midnight Cowboy[source], while in such-and-such a scene, a single frame of a man dressed like Where's Waldo apears[source]..." As I said, though, I'd greatly prefer it if the facts were referenced to reliable secondary sources.--Cúchullain t/c 06:09, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

You are right, just after I wrote the message to you it came to my mind that the most suitable place to put presence of such frames would be in the production. It is however, rather unfortunate that there is no secondary source yet which indicates the presence of the frame (or, Mel's appearance in the trailer for that matter). I can understand because I myself will also feel reluctant in believing such a claim unless I verified it personally. Hopefully a reliable source will come out soon in the form of an interview regarding the movie.--Hirak 99 06:22, 26 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Mathematics Reference Desk

edit

You posted an explicit solution to a question at the mathematics reference desk. Perhaps it did not occur to you, but the rest of us had carefully avoided posting a complete solution. I have removed your answer, and ask that you please do not do this again. Here's why. The guidelines for the help desk clearly state that we do not provide homework answers. We do not know if this question was homework, even if the poster claims it is not. But beyond that, the question was not "give me a solution", but "how would I approach this". What you did is like revealing the ending of a mystery; it spoils the fun. Also, it teaches almost nothing, which defeats the purpose of the desk. If you read our responses to other questions, you will see that we routinely take creative steps to offer guidance without handing over a final solution. We will confirm a correct solution if the poster asks, but that's a very different thing. I realize your mistake is easy to make at first. Please help us maintain the principles of the help desk by being careful not to do this again. Your understanding and cooperation will be appreciated. --KSmrqT 21:28, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

P.S.: I will see a reply here. --KSmrqT 21:30, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I am sorry, I thought he stated clearly that it was not a homework problem. And it did not really occur to me that the people who commented actually avoided the solution deliberately, because most of the suggestions would lead to dead-ends. Since you did not post in my talk page when you removed it, I took the liberty to undo the change. However, I will replace the solution with a proper hint instead. I hope that it is acceptable.--Hirak 99 21:40, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I was posting to your talk page immediately after removing your post, before you reverted. Those trying to cheat on their homework are also willing to lie about a question being homework, so we are always cautious. But, setting that aside, here the poster clearly asked for guidance, not a solution, as follows:
  • "How can someone proceed with such a problem?"
Hints are fine. I notice that yours is almost exactly the same as that first offered by Algebraist, and essentially is the same when combined with the following post by 194.222.88.44; and since mine is the only other post, I see no dead ends anywhere. (My two linear equations yield P(x) = (2x+8)/3, which — being of degree 1 — is also the remainder upon division of P by (x+1)(x−2), a quadratic.) But no matter; sometimes a minor rewording improves understanding. --KSmrqT 22:14, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I stand corrected, there was actually only one dead end out of the three, not most. Algebraist suggested multiplying with appropriate factors, which would not have yielded the solution... But the rest were in the right direction. However nobody mentioned the single most important step in solving the problem where he failed after seeing modular arithmetic is involved, which is to work modulo (x+1)(x-2). Thanks for the heads up on cheaters, will keep in mind not to put full solutions on the reference page in future even when the person claims it is not homework. Cheers, --Hirak 99 22:25, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Hirak! Just dropped by to say hello! How are you? We don't know each other. Let's get introduced. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:29, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi Hirak, if I'm not mistaken, you recently signed up for Bangla wikipedia too, right? Welcome there ... I hope you will contribute on a regular basis ... we need more people to work on our ambitious Bangla wikipedia project ... we have plans to get a CD published by the end of the year. Feel free to contact me here or in bn.wiki (same user name:Ragib) ... Thanks. --Ragib 20:32, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Yes I of course am ardent fan of Satyajit Ray. I saw your edits in Shonku and came yo your user page. If you go to the "History" of Shonku, you can see I also contributed in the article in the past. In fact I happened to start the article in November 2005. Anyway, hope your stay in wikipedia will be wonderful. And bye the way, try to be there in Bengali wikipedia, too. Ragib is doing GREAT job there. However the Bengali wikipedia is relatively poor in coverage of subjects related to West Bengal. That's largely because there are less number of contributors from West Bengal. For any query on Bengali wikipedia (typing software etc) get in contact with ragib. He is a wonderful person and will be more than happy to help. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 07:18, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi Ragib and Dwaipayan. Thanks for dropping by. It really felt nice to encounter more Bengalis in Wikipedia. Yeah I've recently opened an account in the Bengali Wikipedia and do plan to contribute. I will start once I've set up the Indian languages Unicode rendering support in my computer, and I find/create a transliteration service that will transliterate from English to Indian fonts. Hey Hirak. Name 'Hirak' is pretty uncommon. I have one college-friend doing job in Noida. I hope thats not u.

if(u r not the one i m thinking about)
        Please write something about u
else Then also write somthing.

Poor Joke.. Isnt it ?? --Jayanta 01:48, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

The name Hirak is really uncommon. I was christened when the popular movie Hirak Rajar Deshe by Satyajit Ray came out. I'm from a family which likes good literary work, and no wonder my parents were fascinated by the movie (as I am too). And hence the name. Good to see u here, didn't think there'd be so many Bengalis around in Wikipedia, so it's a nice surprise :)
Oh and unfortunately I've never worked in Noida, I've been in Gurgaon for sometimes though. I've seen in your profile that you're from IIT KGP. Sorry it probably isn't me then, as I've studied in ISI Calcutta... hope u find ur friend. Try Orkut :) --Hirak 99 09:45, 5 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nice to know about u Hirak. I ve been recruited by Niksun. And hopefully will come to Gurgaon in July-end. Though a big task is left here. final year project. In which department did u graduate from ISI-Cal ?? and yes i do ve a orkut profile for long. U can add my gtalk-id: jmandal.iitkgp.

Userbox atheism2

edit

I've reverted your edits to the version of this userbox as it exists in my userspace. All you've done is needlessly break a bunch of userpages; the two seperate versions of this userbox can co-exist without any issues. →DancingPenguin 05:36, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes I would have reverted it myself after the correction period was over. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience it may have caused. --Hirak 99 06:59, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what 'conversion period' you're referring to, to be honest, as I don't exactly understand what it is you were hoping to accomplish. →DancingPenguin 02:38, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I was referring to a 'correction period'. The userbox atheist2 was incorrectly userfied by someone, which referred to your userbox. I thought I will leave a notice to people about what has happened so they get a chance to use the correct userfication, and after a couple of days (max 1 week) to remove the notice. However, I do realize now, that using the talk page instead would have been the actual way to do that, and not changing your userbox without prior discussion. --Hirak 99 16:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I understand now. I can't fault you for doing what you did, even if it wasn't the best way of addressing the issue. On a related note, don't be surprised if someone gets the notion to flag your version of that userbox for deletion on the grounds that they find the 'no-god' image to be offensive -- the same has happened in the past to a very similar-looking userbox that once existed in the main template space. →DancingPenguin 18:25, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot for understanding and accepting my apology. Actually what you said is correct - to say it is correct would be in fact an understatement, because it has already happened. The consensus was however, to userfy it instead of deleting it. I would have userfied it myself, but since I am not the creator of this userbox, I waited a while whence it was userfied improperly. Regards, Hirak 99 20:22, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Replaceable fair use Image:Apocalypto_vlcsnap-233832.jpg

Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Apocalypto_vlcsnap-233832.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use media which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Garion96 (talk) 23:07, 22 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for uploading File:Ehrenfest paradox diagram.svg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 13:35, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Kaurwakee Vasistha

edit

The article Kaurwakee Vasistha has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. reddogsix (talk) 17:19, 18 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

An article you recently created, Kaurwakee Vasistha, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Proposed deletion of File:No God Math.png

The file File:No God Math.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused personal image

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist.
