No contextual significance

There must be many articles with audio samples[1] that provide no description of the actual music or are long articles where the sample could be placed better. I don't know why "Spoonful" was targeted: it does have some description of Cream's music and the section is barely big enough to fit the infobox (especially with the image added), so there are no real options for placement of {{Listen}} other than after the infobox. This is one example where leaving the sample in the infobox may be better.

You'll note that I supported moving samples out of the infoboxes in Binkster's RfC, but have since seen that there is no consensus for the strict interpretation of contextual significance that would limit their use to exactly what is described in the prose. This was confirmed when I explored the idea of external audio links vs audio samples at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content/Archive 72#Applicability of WP:FREER to music samples. I have seen that some video links have been archived, which arguments about unavailability in some areas, tracking, and link rot seem to have ignored. But that is another issue.

Sometimes we feel strongly about an issue, but have to accept the fact that others feel differently or do not care (MetroLyrics finally died on its own). Trying to force the issue without any consensus will just cause problems and alienate people.

That was a TFD nomination on "Template:Audio sample". And I read the discussion you initiated at WT:NFC; the participants, including you, were still divided about use of samples in general. I figured that the case-by-case approach, FFD or PROD, is the best way. In my experience, many samples I listed at FFD (ogg files) have been deleted (or removed from some articles but still remain in certain ones). Also, many or some samples I PROD-ded have been deleted without contest, but others I PROD-ded have been de-PRODded lately. You wanted to discuss the samples (or "contextual significance") in a central discussion. I don't know what a discussion generally about non-free audio samples (or "contextual significance" again) will lead other than... I don't know. I guess we should discuss non-free samples generally in WT:NFC. George Ho (talk) 19:46, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
