Hi there Furrykef. I noticed your work on fingerpicking, and the guitar wikibook (good work by the way!), so was wondering if perhaps you can answer a question for me... I fingerpick, but seem to have taught myself an unorthodox style in which I use my pinky finger for the 1st string (thus my ring finger for 2nd, middle for 3rd, index for 4th and my thumb for 5th and 6th). I somehow got it into my head when I was learning that this would be more efficient, as with all fingers in use I might be able to one day do some more complex picking... Hmm.

Have you heard of this style of picking before? Do you know why the pinky is not usually used? --Chopchopwhitey 02:06, 22 May 2004 (UTC)

This is actually very close to the way I fingerpick (at least when I play "Money for Nothing", the song I play most often as it's the first I learned), though I'll pick differently for different songs based on what strings I use most often, whether or not I use the whammy bar, and whether or not I'll need to do any tapping. I think the pinky is often unused because it's easier to play properly if the hand is supported, which is what the pinky is doing. There are lots of other places the pinky can be placed if you need to use the first string but don't want to pluck it with the pinky...e.g., the pickguard, the side of a pickup (the way I often do it on a Les Paul for some reason; wish I actually owned one), or gripping the side of the whammy bar (my favorite "alternate place" for it since it can open up a world of techniques). --Furrykef 04:20, 22 May 2004 (UTC)

Speedy deletion

I disagree with this point of view because admins and RC Patrol need to know the full history of a particular IP address should any vandalism continue. Deleting anon user talk pages should be the exception rather than the rule. Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

Regarding your most recent edit-comment on Super Mario World, there's no reason to get angry over vandalism, as long as the wiki policy stands, it will happen.

If you get angry, they will only find it amusing and keep up that practice, tho it doesn't mean if we leave it it will stop.

However, i do find that the wiki policy in anyone can edit to be both a strength and a weakness, as vandalism will surely stain the credibility of any page.

Compiler metaprogramming example

Hmm, that's a bit sneaky, first editing metaprogramming to change the context of the link and then submitting the linked page to vfd :-P Especially since I'm sort of on forced wikivacation due to the extreme slowness of the wiki.

Hmm, perhaps it just looks that way. Either way it's fine by me, just, well, sneaky perhaps. :-P

Anyway, I've now replied to your comments on talk:Compiler metaprogramming example, though perhaps running this discussion per email or irc and then reporting back on the wiki might be more productive, since it's still extremely slow for me.

Game wiki

Wouldn't you know, I just got done entering about 50 NES games into Wikipedia, and now I find out about the game wiki. Hmm, is there any way the two wikis can benefit each other? i.e., how to avoid accidental duplication of work? Rad Racer 04:11, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Well, of course Wikipedia can cross-reference the game wiki through "external links", and already does so for a couple of the games. To link to a gameinfo page, just use the form [[Wikicities:c:games:NAME OF PAGE]] -- a bit contorted, I know. I wouldn't worry too much about accidental duplication of work, since an encyclopedia and a game site will tend to have a different focus on the article. - furrykef (Talk at me) 04:36, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

SNES Shadowrun

Hi. I appreciate your help in the article I was working on. First off, I didn't know how to do the bulleting thing you did. I was using the BR tage. The asterisks are much nicer. ALso, I wanted to put the spoiler warning but I didn't know how to do that, although I had seen it done before. Thanks. Perhaps the article is a bit... extensive, but I wanted to create it like this since it was one of my favorite games and I have found very few sites out there that contain a good amount of information on the game. That game sure was ahead of its time, and I hope that other Shadowrun (SNES) enthusiasts can get something out of this. Perhaps I will write a walkthrough at the end. Once again, I appreciate your help with it. I wouldn't have been able to figure out the formatting, etc on my own! Ernie.

PS: Is the game Wiki new? Can my SNES Shadowrun article be copied and/or transferred over there?

I'd probably accept, but I never really bothered asking because I'm not really sure I'm an "ideal" candidate. Most of my contributions are annoying little typo corrections (you'll notice I often leave the edit history blank, which I'm not supposed to do, because it gets tiring typing "typo" or "rm comma" or whatever time after time), and I'm not sure I set a good example. I get a little irritated at times (especially after having corrected one typo too many for the day), and one time I was all up in arms because of the way templates were being handled in MediaWiki 1.3 and I was too stubborn to change how I was using them in Wikibooks. Finally, I doubt I'd really use the powers of sysophood very much. I certainly wouldn't abuse them, though. But I'd probably just do the occasional "knock out the redirect that's in the way" kind of thing. 4004 layout nitpicking

Just thought I'd write to explain my rationale for leaving the layout of the Intel 4004 article roughly the way it was (hence my recent rv), and to ask if it didn't look that good anyway(?):

• The  -s are there to right-justify numbers for ease of direct visual comparison, as well as to make the affected lines look more tidy
• The '*'-marked footnote at the sec's bottom should be parenthesized to make it clear it's a note and not a part of the sec proper

Your superscripting of the note-indicating asterisks may be (more) correct and better-looking than the way they were; I think I just used 'ordinary' '*'-s because they looked a little superscripted anyway, w/o any explicit 'nudging'. But I must admit I didn't check any other font than the one I get when I fire up my browser and use the default wkp skin. Please comment. --Wernher 04:32, 30 Apr 2005 (UTC)

The problem with the   thingies is that it will look different to different people and may well actually throw it entirely out of alignment depending on the font. The usual formatting practice is to not worry about aligning things like this, and I think it's a good idea to stay consistent about that. FurryKef to furrykef in AIM

I read about your trouble with the unwanted capitalization of your AIM username. I had the same problem, mine being Jigschwaza before. However, using Gaim under Tools>>Accounts you can modify your screenname to proper lowercase glory. Though I still much prefer using Gaim to AIM myself, others using AIM now see me as jigschwaza. So, voilà! Problem solved.

I've been away from Wikipedia for about a month, but if it's not too late you can consider my apology. Sorry about my brittle and intemperate reply. I worded it very poorly and it didn't accurately reflect my intent. I did not mean to suggest that I own any part of WP, but rather that I think it somewhat impolite to make updates for no other reason than to reformat the source. Of course you did make some content edits which I had simply overlooked, but you hadn't mentioned the substantive edits in the edit summary -- you used the summary only to scold about a source formatting style that you don't like.

Use of linebreaks in article source is controversial, but some editors including myself find it useful at times. There's a discussion of some of the points in Don't use line breaks. If you don't like line breaks in article source, you'll hate the contributions I made to Ruy Lopez, chess opening, and a few other articles. I never reformat existing source just because I prefer a different format as presumably the original author found the format she used to be convenient, but when I add a substantial amount of new material I sometimes put each sentence on a separate line in the new paragraphs that I add. Username

Hey furreykef, it's ⇔Thunderbird⇔, from ye olde HRWiki. I haven't seen you around for a while, which is understandable, moving out of the quiet town to the Big Wiki and all, and being a sysop here no less. But I digress. My reason for contact is a simple one. We recently upgraded to Mediawiki 1.5, as I belive Wikipedia also recently did. As you are no doubt aware, it seems that 1.5 cannot handle usernames without capitalization (furreykef --> Furreykef). We've pretty much got most main users switched over, but one user that is standing out is a certain sysop. Since you're still on the roster, would you mind stepping over for a minute and participating in a short switch over system, to become Furreykef with a capitalization? It's just easier to get it over with now, so it's ready for if you ever edit the ol' Wiki again. Thanks in advance, all you gotta do is go here and let Tom know if you want it done. Their old BETA names are as close as we're going to get to surnames, your "Spaniel" & "Lynx" submissions have no basis within the Game whatsoever.

I typically don't provide an edit summary for minor edits because they're so frequent that, if I felt compelled to type in an edit summary every time, I'd likely not even bother making many of the edits. (For one thing, often when I make such an edit, I find more mistakes and have to make more edits soon thereafter... if I typed in a summary, I'm less inclined to continue reading and notice and correct further mistakes.) So, for me, it's a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils -- either type in summaries less frequently, or edit less frequently. security through obscurity...

Recently, you placed a fact tag on a statement in the Security through Obscurity article (the statement referred to the fact that CS profs. often don't feel the need to prove that security through obscurity is ineffective). There isn't a good review article or such that talks about this... could you, instead, propose different wording. This is part of a larger problem with sourcing that article as there has been little formal attention to the subject. -- Joebeone (Talk) 20:38, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

It seems to me that such a statement is going to need a citation one way or another... there's just no way to say "security through obscurity is obviously wrong", no matter who's said it or how many people have said it, and remain NPOV without at least sourcing it. The Kcherkhoff's principle thing is good, as it points to a well-known principle and a source, but I feel it's not enough. To get rid of the need for the citation, we'd need to get rid of the idea that "security through obscurity is obviously wrong". "Licensee" accent marks

I just thought I'd tell you... I don't know how it's spelled in French, but in English, the word "licensee" is almost never written with an accent mark (even by people who normally write accent marks). For example, www.m-w.com doesn't even list a spelling with an accent mark, even though this dictionary does often list uncommon variants (like "rôle" for "role").
