File permission problem with File:Friday Evening Qawali at Dargah Salim Chisti, Fatehpur Sikri, UP, India.theora.ogv edit

Notification Removed because uploader provided more information, See below , Now tagged for Commons Sfan00 IMG (talk) 19:58, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

There's been some misunderstanding. I took the video myself. I added the book source because the file was tagged earlier for having no source, and I thought that by "source" they meant an external reference either to the musical idiom or to the location of its staging. I guess I am confused now about the difference between "source" and "author." In any case, I have removed the external source and replaced it with an (unequivocal) confession of the video's provenance.  :) Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 16:38, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fowler&fowler. The Pakistan article is currently undergoing a peer review and the aim is to make it a featured article again. An extensive number of edits have taken place over the past few days in this regard to improve the article. I see that you've significantly contributed to the India article in the past and given your expertise in South Asian topics, I am sure you would have some comments to spare for this article too. I will take a look, but let me be blunt. You are either unable to understand my posts or are affecting to not understand in order to preserve your pet formulations. User:Fowler&folwer may have a blunt or even an abrasive style but he is quick and accurate when analysing an article. Finally User:Redtigerxyz has met someone who can give him feedback long overdue. He has gotten away with too many poorly written "good articles". I'm glad to see Wikipedia processes work when it comes to featured articles. User:Redtigerxyz indeed brings a lot of good topics to Wikipedia but the quality is very poor. More than half of his so-called good articles need to be downgraded. Sorry, User:Redtigerxyz, you are not FA material and will not be for a very long time. Sick to GA level and find obscure topics which some people may find exotic and may throw bits of GA status your way or prepare to work a lot harder. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.172.30.1 (talk) 07:42, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bengal Presidency edit

The article on Bengal Presidency claims that during the early part of the 19th century the Presidency extended upto NWFP and included Punjab. But is it not true that there were distinct entities to the west of the present-day Bihar right from the start of British occupation (Most of the United Provinces formed a part of the Ceded and Conquered Provinces, then Agra Presidency and later, North-Western Provinces). Did they come under the Bengal Presidency or were they outside its jurisdiction and if they did, how was the administrative setup in those areas?-RaviMy Tea Kadai 17:29, 8 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Bose 1997 edit

Your recent edit to the dreadful Kashmiri Pandit article added a Harv reference to Bose 1997. The citation was broken because the source was not listed in the bib. I have taken the liberty of adding what I think is the intended source but I cannot confirm it due to snippet view etc. Please could you check. - Sitush (talk) 08:16, 21 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

You are right. Sorry about that. Glad you guys are working on that article. Amazingly too, you've managed to make Yadav, Jat people, Kurmi reasonably stable! I did a large prune of the thing last year and introduced Hasan etc but really have not made much progress since then, in part because I am continually distracted and in part because for a long period it was hard enough just preventing the old stuff from reappearing. List of Doon School alumni edit

Your recent spate (which you reverted) on the 'List of Doon School alumni featured list nomination' was more to do with your personal convictions, whatever they are I'm not averse to them nor am I challenging them (you're entitled to your opinion). But the fault is that you didn't distance yourself while reviewing it. And, casually, trashed the list (and thereby the hours I put in to improve it) by succumbing to your personal opinions of the school. I believe mixing your personal convictions with Wikipedia editing/reviewing is dangerously counter-productive to its well-established neutral standpoint. Doon FL edit

Hi Fowler. I agree that the list of this sort is a bit of fan puffery, but, for a list, it is amazingly well referenced and notability doesn't appear to be a featured list criterion. Just a thought. --regentspark (comment) 10:18, 30 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Kurmi edit edit

Greetings. wrt my last edit in 'Kurmi' i just clarified vague unrefrenced preexisting varna issue in lede with balanced and well ref content did not add anything except accurate ref. in etymology section tortoise totem is not my spec. only full sentance from same ref. previous editor for the reasons best known to him preferred to quote only half sentence from given ref and also surprisingly avoided final conclusive view of ref writer on etymology of kurmi. i merely completed referred sentence. did not add a word of my own. in info box i added a subcaste for which written references are available. thanks. my only concern is immediate deletion of my well referenced content by other editor. i feel sad.Jaychandra (talk) 08:20, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid I can't understand a word you've written here. Best to bring it up on the Kurmi talk page and state your concerns clearly. I do agree with your neutrality tag in the etymology section; however, the shudra bit is not the predominant opinion (and doesn't belong to the lead). Regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 08:24, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

ur last edit 'Kurmi' edit

wrt 'I'm afraid the shudra bit is not the predominant opinion, just that of some Indian sociologists', this may b ur personal view. ref suggest otherwise. i m not judgmental. i have no personal int in varna status of kurmi. i am just going by ref.Jaychandra (talk) 08:43, 31 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

ur last edit 'Kurmi' edit

Thanks for ur feedback. kindly use talk page and resolve before deletion of well ref content. i have already cleared my POV. we should stick to wikis neutrality factor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaychandra (talkcontribs) 06:55, 2 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Let me put it bluntly. Stop pushing the "shudra" characterization on Kurmi. Just because one, two, or even three sources say something doesn't make that thing relevant for the lead of a sensitive article. I have written most of the Kurmi page. I've read all the references including the ones you are repetitively citing to promote your ends. The traditional caste status of the Kurmi is disputed by some of the best-known anthropologists and sociologists working in the field. You have already been served a warning in the template posted on your talk page. If you obsessively keep making your edits, you stand in danger of being blocked or banned. Let his serve as a second warning. Take it to the talk page and, once there please write clearly, punctuating your post properly, so that it can be understood. It needs to be sorted, sure. I am now faced with what appear to me to be a series of poor edits (mostly on MOS grounds, but some POV) at Free Press of India and a somewhat point-y page move for Swaminathan Sadanand. I know what WP:COMMONNAME says but that move seems ridiculous to me - GSearch returns 1.1 million hits for the name "Sadanand" and so it seems sensible to use the more complete name, as "S" will be a reasonably common prefix. I really do not see it as a Bill/William Jefferson Clinton situation where the fight regard precision vs common use. Still, the crap should hopefully be resolved before too much more time passes. Both of those articles should fall under the umbrella of South Asian history. - Sitush (talk) 01:10, 3 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

April 2012 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Talk:Burma/Myanmar, is considered bad practice, even if you meant it well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. Allens (talk | contribs) 12:21, 7 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Focus topic edit

You probably take longer wikibreaks than I do :) However, there's one topic area that can be addressed quite easily even if you have just a few minutes here and there and was wondering if you might consider helping out in that. Category:R. K. Narayan, like all non-Bollywood/caste related topics is a heavily ignored area, albeit significant. Would you be able to spend a few minutes here and there to help bring all book articles within the category to a C-Class level? I've listed a couple of sources within each article as I created them, but there are a lot more and someone with access to an academic library would do better. (RP, this one's for you too). cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 04:27, 13 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I was sifting through WikiProject Mathematics, and found this article. You seem to be the editor who has has the most recent edits done, and I was wondering, do think the article is ready to go under a GA review. If so, Great! If not, what could be done to improve it. Addition on page INDIA edit

I added a sentence on page India, Medieval history beginning 16th century, the information on 15 years (1540-1556) of local Afghan Suri Dynasty and their advisor Hemu's rule, who is also known as the last Hindu emperor of India. 1526 had seen the attack of Babur and demolition of most revered Hindu temples in North India. The barbaric rule was challenged by locals and Afghans lead by Sheh Shah Suri successfully defeated Babur's son Humanyun in 1540 and established an Afghan rule. Hindu king Hemu was an advisor to Islam Shah from 1544 to 1553 and worked as Governor of Punjab, Delhi etc. before acceeding to the throne of Delhi, after winning 22 battles continuously from Punjab to Bengal. Hemu lost his life in 2nd battle of Panipat fighying against Akbar's army. This 16 years non-mughal rule is missing on the page, hence, the need of putting a line. I think the line I wrote settles well with the flow and facts on the page. Please do the needful. Sudhirkbhargava (talk) 11:13, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

There's little I can do here. You will have to discuss this and gain consensus for it on the Talk:India page. Note: New posts are always added at the bottom. You can also click on the "New section" button in the menu at the top of the page. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 11:17, 15 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I figured that the Brahmins, being the top class, would likely have the biggest montages. I was right. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 00:51, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Oh, yes! I am just beginning to tinker with the Brahmin stuff, eg: at Iyengar. Many years ago, a probably apocryphal story claimed that Sid Vicious or some other member of the Sex Pistols was attacked on stage by someone from the audience. The headline was When the fan hits the shit ... It is about time that a lot of the Brahmin articles got a decent once-over, but the fans will not be happy.

Right now, I am taking a short break and tidying some loose ends relating to Mancunian botanists, with the intention of taking John Horsefield to GA. Yes, I am aware that you do not care for the award-seeking tendency but if you fancy taking a look and feel the need to tweak anything there then please do. - Sitush (talk) 01:01, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Saare jahan se accha edit

Do we really need urdu and hindi versions in the article? (Noting that you put them back after I'd removed them.) --regentspark (comment) 16:32, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I didn't realize you had removed them. Well, they've been there for over five years. The the complete unabridged versions are not available in too many other places. Besides there is precedent for other songs or anthems. Le_Marseillaise#Lyrics has French, English Translation, English Versification. Amhrán_na_bhFiann#Lyrics has Irish and English versions. National_Anthem_of_Russia#Official_lyrics has Cyrillic, English Transliteration, and English Translation. Jana_Gana_Mana#Lyrics has Bengali, Bengali Phonemic, English Transliteration, and English Translation. Qaumī_Tarāna#Lyrics has Urdu, English Transliteration, and English Translation. So I don't see why Saare Jahan Se Accha shouldn't have Urdu. It is the language of composition. The Hindi is a separate matter. There was a long discussion on it some four years ago and it was decided to keep it because of the popularity of the song in India. The bigger problem for me is the name. Iqbal called it Tarana-e-Hindi. I personally think the page name should be changed to that. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 18:09, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

India = Colony edit

It's precisely your view that India was a 'colony' and therefore different from other legitimate countries is all the proof I need that your views are heavily biased and it is not worth trying to convince you of anything. The occupation of India by your ancestors as well the occupation by various Muslim invaders were mere chapters in the history of India which has remained a cultural/ethnic/geographic, even a linguistic entity for many millennia. Never mind Akhand Bharat and what the Hindutvavadis says, you clearly need to study-up on your history before you start editing WP pages. As for not creating an account, I have been editing pages since '05 or '06 without an account. I have never felt the need to create one and don't intend to do so now either. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 114.143.119.26 (talk) 11:10, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I thought it was the Brits, Portuguese etc who colonised India. That the IP thinks it was your lot does not inspire confidence in their knowledge. Keep up the good work.

BTW, I might do a trawl of YK's recent article edits, per the ANI discussion. In the circumstances, including the fact that he threw a boomerang, I doubt that I could be accused of hounding if I do a review. What do you think? - Sitush (talk) 12:13, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hounding has to do with actual interaction with him, which, in any case, you can't now have for a week. Trawling, which I'm assuming is done in a subpage of one's user page, is something anyone can do, without actual interaction. I'd say: go for it. I've compiled such statistics for suspected socks, the latest for Moonraker (talk · contribs), a couple of weeks ago. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 12:31, 22 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
You're not a Brit? That's surprising. I was just guessing on the basis of the stench. Your provenance is immaterial. The only thing that matters for the purposes of this discussion is that you are spectacularly ignorant. That you are a professor is both shocking and sad but helps explain the sorry state of academia the world over. Monumental fools like you, biased to the hilt are the reason education is going down the drain. More power to you. 114.143.120.212 (talk) 10:10, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
"Monumental fools like me ... are the reasons." Consider writing in a language in which you can pontificate grammatically. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 06:25, 27 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Wow! You actually think it is 'reasons'. Is there anything left to say. In that sentence even though the word fools is plural the subject is still singular you numbskull. I know the rules of grammar of your language better than you. You should consider making your vacation permanent you retarded waste of space. 114.143.120.212 (talk) 18:21, 27 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I see, you're still at it. At the risk of sounding like one of the prescriptive grammarians of the 19th century, here goes: If "monumental fools" is singular, then subject-verb concord demands, "Monumental fools such as you is the reason that ...." (Similar to, "where handicaps such as deafness is the reason for the institutionalization.") Semantically, though, what makes more sense is: "Monumental foolishness, such as yours, is the reason ...." or "The prevalence of monumental fools such as you is the reason ...." Other anomalies in the rapidly decaying cadaver of your English are: (i) the use of "even though" with "still;" use one or the other, (ii) "know ... better than you;" use "better than you do" (same as "better than you know yourself") or "better than I know you." In conversation, this distinction is not important; but, here, given your dramatic claim, it most certainly is. (iii) "reason education is going ...;" use "reason that education is going." In many instances, though not here, "that" can be (and often is) dropped. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 04:46, 28 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I went through that page, the consensus was not reached, and the discussion is going on, sorry, I cant accept your POV untill an administrator says soPaansing (talk) 06:02, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

There is consensus, it could change, but it hasn't yet. There is no consensus for its reversal. You are not free to interpret things unilaterally. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 06:05, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

June 2012 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, we would like to remind you not to attack other editors, as you did on Talk:The Doon School. Beware of the WP:BOOMERANG. What do you think I was commenting on? Your ungrammatical English language edits. My remarks had nothing to do with you. You might be a great poet in Swahili for all I know. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 15:09, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Das and Indian Nationalism edit

Continue your Das related discussions on his talk page Talk:Satish Ranjan Das. I have moved whatever was not pertinent (for improvement of DS article) from the Doon School's talk page to Das's. Continue it there and don't dump that garbage on Doon School's talk page.--Merlaysamuel :  Speechify  08:25, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK, thank you. I've cleaned up the Doon talk page, made it more readable, I hope. Fowler&fowler«Talk» 14:53, 25 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thank you to you too. Great work on the DS talk page! --Merlaysamuel :  Speechify  09:34, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
