September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

ForestH2

I am ForestH2! I did come back. What were the things you noticed that were alike? Sugarpinet/c 02:45, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm in the middle of an RFA on the English Wikipedia and the Simple English Wikipedia, btw. Sugarpinet/c 02:50, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Fair use images in portals

At the Portal:Dragonlance, we have also ran into problems with fair use images. To see the yays and nays for using fair use images on portals, I've started a poll on Wikipedia talk:Fair use#Fair use in portal-namespace. It would be very helpful if you could vote and to help advertise this poll to anyone you know that would also support this. Thanks. ddcc 15:06, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

After sending it to CfD, and still with no disagrees, do you think we should go on to proposing an amendment at the village pump, or wait longer? ddcc 20:39, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
I created amendment for fair use in portals, as well as submitted to village pump, see here: Wikipedia:Fair use/Amendment/Fair use images in portals#Also.

Voldemort

The reasoning I am using is #3: Articles should not usually be in both a category and its subcategory. For example Golden Gate Bridge is in Category:Suspension bridges, so it should not also be in Category:Bridges. This is the guideline for every other article, and I don't care to bend that for a fictional character. Interrobamf 06:12, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

NarniaWeb

Are you sure about the link to Narniaweb in the The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe article? To me the NarniaWeb page is just a webmaster promoting their site on Wikipedia. I've been inclined to just ignore the article because there has never been any attempt to link to it from the normal Narnia pages; and it clearly gives someone pleasure to keep it updated with the latest changes to the website (someone who might be a useful editor of some other articles for all I know). But I would suggest that we let it sit quietly in it's own corner. LloydSommerer 22:04, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Seattle Academy Vandals

Thanks for fixing the vandalization of the Seattle Academy page. It is pretty constantly vandalized, so I'll try to get something done about it at my school. The last act was by a member of my grade, and I'm the judciary committee representative for my grade, so I might be able to actually stop some of this stuff.

Thanks! Alexbrewer 07:30, 2 November 2006 (UTC)

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Harry Potter forums

Hi thanks for all the advice on what I should and shouldn't do on the Harry Potter wiki pages. i'm thinking of moving the list of deleted scenes from the Differences page to the main movie page seeing as I listed them all regardless of if they were in the book or not.

also in regards to your "plenty of discussion forums out there for secualtion" comment, any suggestions on which one is the best on the net? (which one you use maybe?) E-flah 11:47, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: Resolve an issue on Talk:Luna Lovegood

Hi Fbv65edel,

Sorry for the late reply, but I was on Wikibreak. I was actually involved in a conflict with Michaelsanders myself after a request for a third opinion by someone else, but that conflict has largely been resolved. It looks like the issue has been resolved, but if not, please let me know and I'll be around this time. :-) --Deathphoenix ʕ 16:29, 20 November 2006 (UTC) P.S. Oh, and I appreciate your note of confidence on the talk page. :-) --Deathphoenix ʕ 16:31, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Fbv65edel, I've put in my two cents. Harry Potter subject discussion isn't what it used to be... actually, come to think of it, it's exactly the way it used to be. --Deathphoenix ʕ 06:22, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Assessment

Just literally created a page there: Wikipedia:WikiProject_Harry_Potter/Assessment, but the articles in the assessment table need to be updated in accordance with the HP WikiProject. Thanks, RHB 20:14, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Hit an edit conflict with you, I removed the biography related class categories. I guess the Harry Potter ones just need to be populated now. Should I add a banner to the main project page about this? Thanks, RHB 20:21, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I just copied and pasted your username from earlier, guess you had |65 so thats what it came up with :P RHB 17:32, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Is the Mathbot updated table and worklist not working because Sandpiper modified the {{WPHP}} template? Can it be changed back, seeing as we appear to have consensus? Thanks, RHB 21:22, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

One final thing - should actors and images even have the project banner on their talk page? PS: Only about 150 ratings left to go :P Thanks for your help, RHB 22:12, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Narnia Project II

I'm still trying to do that symbol that would be able to make me a member of the Narnia project. Do you have an example on how it should look on the edit page? Rtkat3 4:41, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Elphias Doge "Research"

Sorry, I knew I should have cited the source. But the thing is there is no known information about the casting of him. I've had direct contact with the actor himself who will playing the part of Elphias Doge. How would I go about citing that? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Exkon (talkcontribs) 22:46, 5 December 2006 (UTC).

Congradulations on the featured list

Nice job on shepherding the Narnian timeline to featured list status. It's nice to see all of your hard work recognized by the wider community. LloydSommerer 18:30, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Assistance

Look at Students in Harry Potter's Year, Harry Potter characters birthday list, and the project page. Take a look at the issue, and contribute. Whether you disagree or disagree, it is vital that these issues are decided by editors who are familiar with Harry Potter and who are capable of deciding upon the worth of the articles, rather than editors who clearly have deep contempt for it and no real understanding of the subject. Please intervene. Michaelsanders 22:23, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Citing and WP:Harry

Hi, This is just an idea for citing and the Harry Potter wikiproject... Have youse thought about citing both the US and UK editions at the same time? For one quote, a user with the UK edition cites the UK book and page, and later on, a user with the US edition adds on the US book and page. Wouldn't WP:Harry have enough members to be able to support such a system? Even if you think that that's a bad idea, maybe some form of a 'Harry Potter referencing guide' could be made to assist. - Malkinann 04:08, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Maybe youse could check whether a chapter and book is close enough? Over at Wikiproject Sailor Moon, I've helped make a references guide - Wikipedia:WikiProject Sailor Moon/References - it's partially a WP:CITE-for-moonies, and partially a source list. It's intended to be an aide to copy-pasting.  ;) - Malkinann 04:42, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Crouch

He is more commonly known as Mr Crouch, actually. Michaelsanders 20:45, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, I suspect anyone searching for him will type 'Mr Crouch', which is the name he is commonly known by ('The Madness of Mr Crouch'). Also, if Barty Crouch Sr redirects there anyway, where's the problem? Especially since it is the preference of a formal over informal name for a minor character. Michaelsanders 01:07, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
How many hits does Mr Crouch get? Also, don't forget that both names apply also to the son. How many Barty and Bartemius results point to which? Michaelsanders 11:53, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Re: Severus Snape

I don't frequent the Harry Potter portal, but the Severus Snape article is on my watchlist, for obvious reasons. Evidently, there's been substantial discussion about the "Allegiance" designation, and quite a lot of disagreement.

I haven't participated in the discussion, but I've participated in similar discussions at Talk:Abortion, and, when we finally reached a solution agreeable to all parties in the matter of that article's introduction, we placed a notice within the article's code asking that other editors consider and respect this past consensus before making changes to the opening. I expect that this convention is the same throughout Wikipedia, which was the basis of my revert.

Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. At this point in time, the only person who knows for certain which colour hat Snape is wearing is J.K. Rowling, so let's wait until the 7th book until we start making definitive statements. Thanks. -Severa (!!!) 04:55, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

I didn't really think so with her first straw poll, but the second one is definitely showing that she's getting into WP:POINT territory. I'm going to sit back and she what she does in the talk page.
