Erwin85Bot

Is Erwin85Bot's catcount still working? The last update for Wikipedia:WikiProject Dungeons & Dragons/Assessment statistics was on December 29, and I've seen a few other pages that also haven't been recently updated. Thanks! -Drilnoth (talk) 15:35, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

No, the last few days the toolserver has been down and the database for the English Wikipedia is not yet available. When it is my bot will start working again. --Erwin(85) 15:55, 3 January 2009 (UTC)
Gotcha; thanks. -Drilnoth (talk) 18:56, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Fort Myers Miracle

I'm not all that Wikisavvy, and had been trying to figure out how to move the pictures I had taken into the commons section. Thanks for doing it.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 13:00, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Well, I didn't move the image myself. My bot only notified you of the move. It was probably another bot that moved them and that's done simply by uploading the image to Commons:. The local copy here is then marked as available on Commons. --Erwin(85) 15:01, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

CatCount off?

The category counting at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Right panel seems to be off... it's been getting updated at the right time, but some of the months (like January 2009) show a drastically different number than are actually in the category. Any idea what's causing that? Thanks. -Drilnoth (talk) 14:44, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

For January 2009 there was an error in the syntax. It actually counted January 2008, see my diff. Could it be that the others are wrong as well? If not, which ones are off? --Erwin(85) 19:42, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Well that fixed that! :) However, it looks like all of the counts dating back to January 2008 are off by some number, which really varies based on the month. The code on all of them looks right, but the numbers shown are lower than what is in the category itself. Thanks. -Drilnoth (talk) 19:49, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
There still seem to be some errors in the catcount there, as well as at the one on my userpage. -Drilnoth (talk) 14:52, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
There's indeed a discrepancy between the two counts, but I've come to believe that mine is right. The reason being that I've been tracking a category at the Dutch Wikipedia and the toolserver count actually changes when I delete a page and the Wikipedia one does not. My guess is that Wikipedia uses some cache or is delayed by the job queue. --Erwin(85) 17:55, 7 February 2009 (UTC)
Okay; thanks for the clarification. -Drilnoth (talk) 18:34, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks

  • Thanks for letting me know about the bot flag on nl.wikipedia. and many thanks for giving the flag.--Ghaly (talk) 10:11, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Finally, I want to excuse me about the incidents that happened with the Eleazar (painter) page because I’m a new Wikipedia user and I had problems for writing the article, the image files and for making the suitable references, all because of my poor level of English. If you think that the article can be improved, please let me know. Thanks.--81.39.1.110 (talk) 02:11, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, the page was deleted by MBisanz. So I suggest talking to him. --Erwin(85) 10:42, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

project stats request

Hi there Erwin :) I was wondering if could put Erwin85bot to generate a table with links to the intersection categories for WikiProject Cape Verde, like it does right now for Wikipedia:WikiProject Chennai/Assessment/Statistics, is that possible? Thanks in advance, Waldir talk 23:45, 8 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, this depends on whether or not you use a separate intersection category. My bot cannot count the intersection of categories; it only deals with single categories. If you use these intersection categories I suggest checking tools:~erwin85/catcount.php. That should tell you what syntax to use. Let me know if you need any help. --Erwin(85) 21:27, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I see now. So the bot doesn't generate the table, it just fills the values where the markup says so, right? If so, doesn't the new {{PAGESINCATEGORY:Foo}} feature replace its functions? --Waldir talk 22:58, 9 March 2009 (UTC)
Replying to myself, apparently not. If a category has subcategories, PAGESINCAT includes these are in the count. To simplify the markup, I chose to use a mixed approach, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Cape Verde/Stats. Cheers, --Waldir talk 09:46, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I've decided to try a PAGESINCAT-based only approach, since I know exactly how many subcategories each cat has (I use #expr then, to subtract that value). I am thinking of creating a template based on that, what do you think? --Waldir talk 10:17, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
They do pretty much overlap, but when I wrote this bot the magic word wasn't available yet. The advantage of my bot is mostly that it uses live data and can filter namespaces. A template could definitely be useful though. --Erwin(85) 19:34, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
Yes, the namespaces thing was an issue, but I think I solved it now. If you have patience to read about it, take a look at MSGJ's talk page. Also, I plan to make that table a template for other projects to use :) --Waldir talk 19:41, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Commons:File:Harvard Square (1).

I note that your bot dispatched my image of Harvard Square to wiki media commons Commons:File:Harvard Square (1).JPG. I don't know why and don't really care. But the file that is now under that name is an image of Harvard yard. Tiles (talk) 06:37, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Please note that my bot only notified you of the move. It was Sfan00_IMG who uploaded it to Commons using commonshelper. Commons:Harvard Square.JPG already existed by then, but I'm not sure why that one is called square. --Erwin(85) 16:11, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Moves to Commons

Thanks for making the move, and I appreciate the notice. WVhybrid (talk) 17:50, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

You're welcome. Though my bot is only responsible for the notice. Someone else moved your images. --Erwin(85) 21:31, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Cheers

Thanks for completing my nl.wiki rename request so quickly. regards, –xeno (talk) 15:19, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Not relevant - editing Japanese Art History.

Dear Erwin,

I have seen you have done a certain amount of editing on some Japanese art subjects. Hasui, Goyo, and Ota Nampo.

I do not know if you have any Art History insights but:

In Art History it is of the outmost importance to have visual examples of the subjects discussed (pretty self evident?).

This is why I recently started to put some relevant links to such images. Most of the art history links in wiki are marred by bad images, dubious works lack of contextual explanations and so on. In the links I provide there are no such blemishes.

I do not really understand how you after a reading time of 35 seconds can decide to delete four links, I am one of the foremost experts on some of the subjects. I would need longer time to establish what is relevant and not.

In erudite academic circles wikipedia has a bad name, as a playground for ignorant junior high school teachers who rewrites and copies entries from books which are either to elementary or they do not have enough knowledge to understand the subject fully. This produce the very low quality entries we can see within my field Oriental art history.

No academics I know bother writing anything for wikipedia anymore. It seems as everybody is feed up with having their work trashed by ignoramuses.

What is your curriculum vitae in Japanese art history?

I have a 40 year career as a professional lecturer, curator and writer about Japanese art. I have lived in Japan since 20 years.

I would think you should restudy the material and if you do not feel you can make a profound judgment you should revert the links to point to the images.

If you judge the links are not relevant you should make a profound argument therefore, so your reasons can be tested?

Best regards from Tokyo —Preceding unsigned comment added by 219.185.152.1 (talk) 08:52, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

ProcessWiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ProcessWiki)

Hi Erwin, I read your comments on my discussion page. I posted my reply on the deletion on the corresponding project page. Besides the deletion I would also like to react on your statement Wikipedia is not a linkfarm. When I take a look at the Business_processes#External_links I see another external link to a website about business processes. What is the difference between a link to the Processwiki and one to the other website? --Pvanerk (talk) 08:54, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi, first of all thanks for replying to the deletion nomination. Second, the most important difference between these links is that you caught my attention by adding your links to multiple pages on both the Dutch and English Wikipedia. My not removing other links doesn't mean they are more useful. I just didn't check them. --Erwin (talk) 19:30, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
Erwin, that doesn't sound like a really consistent approach ;-) More as a selective, biased decision. Nevertheless, on the english version of wikipedia you can find quite some external links mentioned in articles (in contrast to the dutch wikipedia). The english wikipedia is not so strict regarding the insertion of external links, so I still am convinced you should be able to add external links to articles (for the english wikipedia, for the dutch version you are completely right!). --Pvanerk (talk) 13:14, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Meta admins and discussions

Hi there. There has been mention of a meta blacklisting and admin actions (from January 2009) at a current request for arbitration here on en-Wikipedia. The request is titled "Abd and JzG". I've asked there whether I've found the right links to the meta discussions and actions mentioned at the request. If I have the right person (I think you made the edit to the blacklist to add the website in question), then this is a courtesy notification so that you are aware of this. There was also an earlier RfC, but I don't know if you were aware of that. If you could help fill out some of the background to this, either at the request or when the case opens, that would be great. Thanks. I'm leaving a duplicate of this note at your meta user talk page. Carcharoth (talk) 20:15, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't know about either one. I'm not familiar with the workings of the this wiki's arbitration committee, so if you need anything let me know. --Erwin (talk) 20:28, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello Erwin,

I see that you have been removing anything posted by myself to do with Algarve travel. Is there a reason you are targeting this site?? (as this is not the first time you have removed info) why not the other external sites linked then?? such as www.algarve.com.pt how are they different ? If I look at your reasoning to Pvanerk above: "you caught my attention by adding your links to multiple pages" there are NO multiple pages for this site you just deleted on Wikipedia. Please explain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2008traveller (talkcontribs) 15:09, 27 April 2009 (UTC)

Malcolm McCulloch AfD mentioned but does not appear on WikiProject Deletion sorting/Living people

I started an AfD on Malcolm McCulloch (User:xeno was kind enough to help me with it.)
AfD discussion here http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Malcolm_McCulloch&redirect=no says
"Note: This debate has been included in the list of Living people-related deletion discussions. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 00:02, 1 May 2009 (UTC)"

However, I do not find any mention of Malcolm McCulloch at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Deletion_sorting/Living_people
Is everything okay, or am I missing something, or is there some problem? -- 201.37.230.43 (talk) 13:32, 1 May 2009 (UTC)

There was indeed a problem. Thanks for mentioning it! I've restored some comments needed for my bots and now it lists the pages again. Thanks. --Erwin (talk) 08:47, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Moving Files to Wikimedia Commons

You sent me a message on my talk page that said that File:Lilac crowned amazon in Mexico.jpg has been moved to Commons:File:Amazona finschi -Mexico-6a.jpg on Wikimedia Commons. There are two other files, File:Princess cut 250 x 250 px.PNG and File:Olive ridley turtles.JPG that I uploaded on Wikipedia instead of Commons (it was whas I was new here). Could those two files be moved too? --The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 17:30, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Sure, I've asked someone to move them. Basically that's just re-uploading them to Commons and then tagging them for deletion here. The only difference is that he uses a bot to do so. The bot helps in attributing the original uploader (in this case you) and categorising the image. --Erwin (talk) 20:08, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. Actually, I figured that you must have because I was looking at Commons:Category:Lepidochelys olivacea and I saw my picture there. Then I typed in the name of the other picture and saw it there too. --The High Fin Sperm Whale (talk) 03:16, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

No problem. Happened to me as well. --Erwin (talk) 08:51, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Nobots compliant?

Does this bot respect {{nobots}} requests? It posted to my talkpage in spite of the template asking it not to.  Skomorokh  20:41, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the removal, but I'm more worried that I or the bot are doing something wrong...  Skomorokh  20:44, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, I am actually. There was a mistake in the links. It messed up the AfD and the article. Anyway, I think you're transcluding the bots/nobots template through another template, arent't you? If so, you need to transclude it directly, so when a bot gets the page text it can scan for bots/nobots. --Erwin (talk) 20:47, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I see. Thanks very much!  Skomorokh  21:03, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
No problem. Your talk page should now be ignored by all compliant bots. --Erwin (talk) 21:04, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Notification of my own actions: AfD nomination of Richard Bamping

Hi. Your bot is notifying me about my own actions. Please see my talk page. Thanks. --Kleinzach 01:48, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll make it ignore those. --Erwin (talk) 05:26, 26 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, that would be welcome. Feels a little silly it notifies me after a day that i started an AFD on an article :) Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 06:56, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
Indeed it does. It ignores them from now on. --Erwin (talk) 20:49, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Commons bot file moves

So far your bot has notified me that four files have been moved to commons and will be deleted. What will happen to the pages using the original file. Will the file be changed in the articles before the original is deleted?--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 01:25, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Before deleting these files the pages will be updated to use the new file name. If the name didn't change there's no need to edit any of those pages. --Erwin (talk) 20:49, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Re:Articles for deletion/Shirley, Squirrely and Melvin LIVE

Please don’t delete my article Shirley, Squirrely and Melvin: LIVE. I have reliable third-party sources for the article, albeit in book form and not websites. The dramatis personae derives from an article in the 2nd edition of Rolling Stone Album Guide and it was the first cross-artist mashup album. Besides, the story of Chipmunk Punk is incomplete without it.--What about a squirrel? (talk) 21:18, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

AFD notification

Can you show me where Erwin85bot was approved to make notices of AFDs?—Kww(talk) 01:30, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

That's Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Erwin85Bot 8. Why? --Erwin (talk) 09:23, 27 July 2009 (UTC)
Couldn't find it when I went looking for it, and would have objected to it if I had known it was up for discussion. I generally don't nominate article creators, and don't think it's a good idea to do so. Is there a way for me to mark the AFD so that your bot will ignore it?—Kww(talk) 02:15, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
At the moment there isn't, but could you explain why you think it's not a good idea? --Erwin (talk) 08:00, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Hadn't seen that you replied here. It's drama inducing. Article creators tend to have an emotional attachment to their creation that prevents them from taking an objective view of the proceedings.—Kww(talk) 01:22, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Erwin85Bot

I received a message saying Erwin85Bot had moved File:Kohl's.png to Wikimedia Commons. You should be aware that in the USA at least, this is only a fair use image, and not without copyright. Your bot, unfortunately, screwed up. --naryathegreat | (talk) 00:49, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

I assume you're talking about Commons:Image:Kohl's.png, right? Apparently, they consider it public domain as it is plain text. For the record, the image was moved by John Bot II and this move was approved by MBisanz. My bot only notified you of this move to Commons. --Erwin (talk) 07:34, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't see how somebody actually approved this (since it is obviously not public domain), but I was only telling you as a courtesy because I thought your bot had messed up. I honestly couldn't care less whether it stays on Commons or not. Cheers -- naryathegreat | (talk) 22:20, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Words and fonts are not copyrightable, is why that is considered PD, I think. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 22:46, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Well I think fonts are copyrightable actually, which is why you have to pay for the right use certain ones. Adobe's website has a number for sale, for instance. Words are not copyrightable of course, but logos are. I'm not saying fair use doesn't make the acceptable use area broad here, which it does. As long as you're not using it to sell a product as though it were made or endorsed by Kohl's you're in the clear. I'm just saying that to call it "public domain" is another thing entirely. --naryathegreat | (talk) 23:37, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
It occurred to me that I am using copyright and trademark interchangeably, which is not correct. I suppose Kohl's is a trademark, although I'm not sure I buy the "trademarks don't have a copyright associated with them" assertion. I still think that you can copyright a "font", however. -- naryathegreat | (talk) 23:41, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Here it is, Typeface#Legal_aspects. I guess it depends. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 23:58, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Barnstar

  The Barnstar of Diligence
The Barnstar of Diligence may be awarded in recognition of a combination of extraordinary scrutiny, precision and community service.

This barnstar is awareded to Erwin, for his incredible User:Erwin85Bot, which we had requested. This bot will help countless editors, especially new editors, by alerting them to an article being deleted. Thank you. Ikip (talk) 21:13, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Two burning questions:

  1. Sir, could you post the coding of User:Erwin85Bot on the User:Erwin85Bot page?
That way if you stop editing wikipedia and the bot stops working, we don't have to reinvent the wheel, as you did, because the last editor stop editing after the bot stopped working.
Also, I would also be interested in learning how you actually programmed User:Erwin85Bot. I have been self-teaching myself python and other languages, and it would be inspiring to see the coding.
  2. A few other editors and I had always dreamed of alerting every person who had made signifigant edits to the article also.
I know there are tools like http://vs.aka-online.de/cgi-bin/wppagehiststat.pl which list every editor who has ever edited the page and the number of edits of each editor on a page. Illustrating that extracting this information is possible.
I know it is technically possible to make such a bot...but have no idea how...would you be interested?

Thank you again kind sir. Ikip (talk) 21:22, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. I appreciate it. 1) I've committed the source code to my SVN repository. An online viewer of the repository can be found at fisheye.toolserver.org. At the moment this file is not yet shown in that viewer, but it should appear soon. 2) The bot actually already notifies all authors with more than 5 non-minor edits. Trouble is that it uses the toolserver's replicated database to do so, but that the toolserver has been having some problems these last few days. I'll probably rewrite my bot a bit to in that case only notify the first author as it hasn't been running now at all. --Erwin (talk) 11:51, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
Please not that the bot uses User:Erwin/AfDNote as a template for the messages it leaves. It can easily be edited and improvements are always welcome. --Erwin (talk) 11:55, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
I brought up some questions about your bot here: Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_deletion#Relisting. Thanks again sir. Ikip (talk) 04:24, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
I'll look into this later today. --Erwin (talk) 09:02, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Image replacement

The new image at commons replacing this

File:Sodolak's chicken fried bacon.jpg

is improperly captioned with vague and unencyclopedic text. It will be unfortunate if the proper caption is lost. ChildofMidnight (talk) 06:41, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

True, I replaced the Commons caption with the Wikipedia one. Please note that my bot did not actually upload the Commons image, but only notified you that the Wikipedia one was tagged as being replaced by the Commons one. --Erwin (talk) 09:02, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Duplicate notifications

I think that your bot is doing a useful job. However, it does duplicate manual notifications and that causes clutter and potential nuisance to users. See User talk:Keallu for example. Either it should check first for manual notifications or the suggestion that nominators notify creators should be changed. Bridgeplayer (talk) 00:34, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

I agree. It does indeed check for manual notifications, but due to problems with the toolserver the checks aren't as good as they should be and normally are. I'll try to make a workaround for this. Thanks for your message. --Erwin (talk) 09:23, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
yah, it works: [1] Ikip (talk) 14:24, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Erwin85Bot

Noticed the bot hasn't been running the last few days. Is that because of the changes the the wiki software? Hiding T 10:25, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it should be back up now. --Erwin (talk) 18:42, 22 September 2009 (UTC)

Re: NowCommons: File:Ellis-twick.jpg

File:SunflowerField.jpg

You wrote:

File:SunflowerField.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:SunflowerField.jpg.

I didn't find this as helpful as it could have been, because:

  1. It didn't tell me what page it's used on, and I had to go hunt for it. I track hundreds of pages, so that wasn't as obvious as it seems.
  2. I didn't use File:Sunflowerfield.jpg exactly. I used Image:Sunflowerfield.jpg (which the bot must have seen in order to send the message). Changing Image:Sunflowerfield.jpg to Commons:File:Sunflowerfield.jpg doesn't work, and the message didn't give me information on how to make the right change.

Thanks. Waitak (talk) 12:46, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

You mean that you miss the information about what changes need to be made? I didn't include that because usually the sysop deleting the Wikipedia image will make sure of that, but I guess I can add some information. --Erwin (talk) 13:28, 7 October 2009 (UTC)

Images

Hi Erwin, I see you've been moving some images I uploaded to the Commons, e.g. File:Deir Yassin after occupation, April 1948.jpg. Are you sure they are Commons-compliant? I was told they are fine here, because PD in Israel, but not fine for the Commons because not PD in the U.S. Do you happen to know what the rules there are? SlimVirgin talk|contribs 15:04, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

Erwin85Bot and redirects

Hi there Erwin :). I noticed here that Erwin85Bot leaves messages even if the talk page is a redirect. Would it be possible to skip redirects please? As they are normally the talk page of a blocked or retired user. Also, the bot categorised Erik9bot as a "major contributor" to the page, even though it only added a cleanup template, would it be possible to check if users were just adding template too please? Thanks :) - Kingpin13 (talk) 07:35, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

yeah for your bot! User_talk:129.241.168.140 I see it working again! Ikip (talk) 23:00, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

RE: NowCommons: File:MFM LOC wmm .jpg

File:MFM LOC wmm .jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:Matthew Fontaine Maury-wmm6.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:Matthew Fontaine Maury-wmm6.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. This bot did not copy the image itself. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 07:15, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

I placed the same image on wikipedia long ago and recently on wikicommons with a year or two apart before all images started going to WikiCommons. Sometime ago I uploaded it to WikiPedia and recently I uploaded the same to WikiCommons to use in books I am working with on WikiSource. "This bot did not copy the name itself " - Of course not. I renamed the file. Long ago, and perhaps even now, people would upload images with numbers created by their digital camers &c. I wanted my image to be on Commons so that I could use it on WikiSource and when doing that I chose to give the image a more appropriate name as opposed to initials MFM LOC. I am not trying to do anything wrong or sneaky if that is what you thought. I did what I needed to do for what I have been working on (books) on wikisource. Naturally I know where the image is since I placed it on Commons for reasons. I don't care about the older one on Wikipedia. I would remove it myself if I did. My interest was and remains with illustrated books on WikiSource via WikiCommons. Yes, I notice not the "automated message" and this is not an automated reply but rather just so you know the situation. Thank you,  – Brother OfficerTalk 07:53, 27 October 2009 (UTC)
Ah, my bot indeed doesn't check if the uploaders are the same. It's pretty useless to leave a message in that case, so I'll have to add such a check. It's actually a good thing you moved the images to Commons, so please don't feel offended by my bot's message. It was just to inform you that some images were moved, but as you moved them yourself it shouldn't have left a message. Thanks! --Erwin (talk) 10:49, 27 October 2009 (UTC)

Nomination

Why did I get nominated and what is it? (RealityShowsRCool (talk) 01:24, 30 October 2009 (UTC))

Could you please elaborate? What nomination are you talking about? --Erwin (talk) 09:26, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

File:Romea.jpg

Hi, your bot needs a tweak. It mistakenly uploaded a featured picture to Commons and marked it for speedy deletion at en:wiki, even though the file was clearly marked with a template that it will not qualify for transfer to Commons until 2039. See File:Romea.jpg. Durova357 23:51, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, please note that my bot only notified you of the upload to Commons. The actual transfer was done by Kyro using CommonsHelper. Too bad it's only PD in the United States though. --Erwin (talk) 12:39, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
So it's Kyro I'll have to notify? Okay, thanks. Durova357 17:07, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Erwin the bot's 'message'

What is the meaning of this? "I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it."

That was way too funny... my response to this was as follows: "Nice of you to drop by, Erwin... I blame you for every single problem on Wikipedia today. You are a scourge; off to the scrap heap with you, you useless bot!!! HUZZAH!!"

Have a good day- I assure you I am not mad. :P Monsieurdl mon talk 02:30, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Question for you

How do I get your bot to notify all relevant parties of ths AfD? Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/SEIU Local 1 Canada. Thanks for any help you can provide. - Hamster Sandwich (talk) 02:34, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

That'll happen automatically from 1:00 (UTC) the following day, so in this case tonight at 1:00 (UTC). --Erwin (talk) 09:36, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
In that case you are doing a good thing! I started to notify all the editors manually, got through six or seven, and thought, "There must be a bot doing this..." That's why I thought to ask. I don't do as much AfD stuff these days, but an IP asked me to put up an "attack page" there. It'll probably just be parsed down to what can actually be verified from (surprisingly) scant sources. Thanks again! Best regards, Hamster Sandwich (talk) 23:59, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
You're welcome. --Erwin (talk) 09:56, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

XLinkBot

Hi. I am not sure how, so I think I'd better ask. How can I make Erwin85Bot tell that it does not have to tell XLinkBot about deleted pages or similar (XLinkBot has due to its nature not a bot-flag, I guess that is where the problem lies)? --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:39, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, you can just add {{bots|deny=Erwin85Bot}} to XLinkBot's talk page. From then on my bot will no longer edit it. --Erwin (talk) 11:35, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
Cheers! --Dirk Beetstra T C 15:56, 26 November 2009 (UTC)

Bot notifying already notified users.

Is User:Erwin85Bot operating properly when it notifies a user who was already notified of an AfD? Example; User talk:Jacobeiler. Abductive (reasoning) 02:22, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Interesting. I noticed that on User talk:Henry Delforn, although he blanked the page twice between the notifications. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 09:08, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Usually my bot relies on the database to determine whether a user has been notified. This weekend the database wasn't up-to-date resulting in my bot using a fallback method that wasn't as good. I've now improved that fallback method. Thank you both for letting me know. --Erwin (talk) 14:37, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Bot missing notifications

As discussed over at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Deletion_notifications, I want to be notified whenever any article that I have started or edited gets PRODded or AFDed. Is there some sort of opt-in process for your bot? Because I've had experiences of articles I've started or edited getting PRODded or put on AFD or even deleted without my ever finding out about it until months later, so the bot doesn't seem to always notify. —Lowellian (reply) 19:53, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Please note that my bot doesn't notify users of articles getting PRODded. I'd like to look into the missing AfDed ones though. Do you perhaps have an example of one you wasn't notified of? --Erwin (talk) 14:37, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Bot notifying the wrong editor?

I was notified here, but I appear nowhere in the edit history (or in the deleted page history). Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:21, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. My bot incorrectly thought the page was moved due to it being a redirect when my bot treated it and a bug in checking for page moves in the log. That bug has now been fixed. --Erwin (talk) 14:37, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

Make your bot more efficent

Hey there Erwin I saw that your bot counts the number of pages in a category. I have a trick to ease (some) of the load on the bot. On the next run replace

{{User:Erwin85/CatCount}}<!-- count:Category; ns: -->0<!-- end -->

with

{{PAGESINCATEGORY:Category}}

That template does exactly what the bot does, only it uses the API.

Note you can make it recursive by changing Category into Category|R Thanks! Tim1357 (talk) 22:02, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

WP:DELSORT based on infobox?

I see your bot already does some DELSORT work, but only for living people. Have you considered extending your bot to list other types of pages on the deletion sorting queues? The listings should obviously be conservative, i.e. avoid false positives as much as possible, even if that means not listing most articles anywhere. It looks like the best choice for a sorting key is the infobox (rather than categories); e.g. {{infobox software}} rather unambiguously identifies where an article should be listed. The bot only need parse the first few lines in the article. As far as configuration goes, a dictionary mapping infobox types to delsort queue names should follow KISS. Thoughts? (I have decent Python coding skills, and in principle can help, although it looks like you have the delsort code in place already, and the parsing is rather trivial.) What is the cut off?

What is the cut off for AfD notification by your bot? I just saw it notify an editor that hadn't made an edit to the article in question for over 2 years. Is there any criteria or does it just notify everyone who ever edited? Niteshift36 (talk) 02:02, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
