Paul Bannister

Quick query - did he definitely play for Eastwood Town? Given that he was Stoke-based, was it not Eastwood Hanley? Similarly, I suspect he may have played for Milton United (Staffs) not Milton United (Oxon)? Cheers, Number 57 13:17, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

The Milton United query also looks relevant to Peter Griffiths (footballer, born 1957), Colin Askey, John Askey and Peter Ford (footballer). All of them were northern-based and suddenly coming to play for/manage an Oxfordshire-based team seems a little odd. Number 57 13:19, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

The source says Eastwood for Bannister and Eastwood United for Colin Askey, and Milton United for the rest. I would suspect you're correct anyway!--EchetusXe 13:37, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

Perhaps it would be better to leave them unlinked unless we have confirmation? I only came across this as I was looking at Category:Milton United F.C. (Oxon) players today, and I think most of the people in there aren't actually from that Milton... Number 57 17:42, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

The Sentinel says that Milija Aleksic, Mick Cullerton, Terry Miles and Stan Steele played for Eastwood Hanley. It's quite strange, I lived near the ground as a kid and never realised until recently there was/is a football club there, The "stadium" is just an old pitch with a tiny concrete stand down one side. Seems mad that all these old pros went on to play there, but yeah probably best to delink them like you suggest.--EchetusXe 22:33, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

In fact, I'll just assume the Port Vale players were at Eastwood Hanley. I will leave Leonard Jones (footballer) unlinked because he was there in 1900, so probably a precursor club to Eastwood Hanley.--EchetusXe 23:05, 22 January 2018 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello EchetusXe, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!

The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

• The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
• We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

• We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

• ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
• Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

Newspaper archives

Hello. Depends which ones you mean. For old papers, https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search , a subscription site with which Wikipedia once had a partnership but doesn't now. You can search free online, but you only get snippet results, which can be enough but often isn't. For relatively recent ones, see Wikipedia:Gale, which is worth applying for: lots of local papers as well as the nationals mentioned on that page. I used to have online access to a load of stuff ancient and modern through an academic library but that ended recently, more's the pity.

It's always worth finding out what your county library offers. Most have subscriptions to some newspaper archives, available online if you're lucky. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 12:59, 22 March 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) The BNA is undoubtedly the best for historical British newspapers, but it's quite dear for a subscription. They do, however, give you three free views when you register an account. I have access to Newspapers.com, Newspaperarchive.com and HighBeam Research through the Wikipedia Library and I would certainly recommend signing up for those. Nzd (talk) 10:35, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

Paid editing

• Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

• The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
• Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies. A further discussion is currently taking place at: Can a subject specific guideline invalidate the General Notability Guideline?

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, EchetusXe. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment.
