Coordinates

"If you learn just how to do the geographical coordinates of buildings, here and on Wikimedia Commons, please let me know how you obtain the coordinates, and how you post them. Dthomsen8 (talk) 12:53, 10 March 2009 (UTC)Dthomsen8"

Well I've only done this on Wikipedia, but it should be pretty similar. I use http://itouchmap.com/latlong.html

  • You type in an address such as "Broad St and John F Kennedy Blvd Philadelphia, Pennsylvania"
  • The website spits out a map and coordinates that look like 39.95341,-75.163869. That is the actual intersection of Broad and JFK, if you want the SEPTA station in the City Hall court yard,
  • Click the "M" icon and then the blue indicator to get 39.952449,-75.163522.

The wikipedia code looks like {{coord|39.9524|-75.1635|region:US-PA_type:landmark|display=title}}

  • Replace the Latitude and Longitude with your coordinates.
    • Notice I only included the first four digits after the decimal point. You don't need to be overly precise.
  • Region helps make the map accurate.
  • "Type:..." could be "landmark" "city", "country", or several other values listed hear, depending on what the article is about, but for buildings or statues "landmark" is the best.
  • "display=..." can be "title" to place the Coordinates at the top of the page, or "inline" to place it in the article, or "inline, title" / "title, inline" to show both.
  • Some pages that might interest you

Hope this helps Awg1010 (talk) 01:10, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

That is very helpful. After I posted the question to you, I found List of National Historic Landmarks in Philadelphia which provides the coordinates of historically certified buildings in Philadelphia. This is ideal for submitting photos of these buildings to Wikimedia Commons. Dthomsen8 (talk) 09:14, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Dthomsen8
I have found a very useful web site that converts a US street address to coordinates, at http://geocoder.us/ DThomsen (talk) 16:52, 14 March 2009 (UTC)Dthomsen8

Philadelphia NRHP Photos

I got your message about Philadelphia NRHP Photos. It would be great if you were able to take new pics to fill in gaps or to improve upon pics already included in either List of RHPs in Philly (a shortcut to a longer-named article) or the subset of Philly NRHPs which are further designated NHLs, at List of National Historic Landmarks in Philadelphia. Yes, I would be glad to help u link in any pics. Please let me know when you've uploaded one or more to commons.wikimedia.org. doncram (talk) 13:26, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

When I provide the photos, I will also provide some street addresses for the locations. For example, Cliveden (Benjamin Chew House) is at 6401 Germantown Avenue. One of the listings, Philadelphia School of Design for Women, which is now part of the Moore College of Art, has coordinates but not a street address. I have written to the NHL for the street address. Dthomsen8 (talk) 18:28, 11 March 2009 (UTC)Dthomsen8
1346 North Broad Street is the address of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, according to an email I have from the NHL. DThomsen (talk) 21:27, 13 March 2009 (UTC)Dthomsen8
The building also has a PHMC marker confirming the above. --DThomsen8 (talk) 23:00, 12 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia books

Thanks for adding the book to the Wikipedia article. I'm not so sure, however, of the value of doing more; the number of readers of Wikipedia is roughly 1000 times larger than the number who edit it, so I'd guess that most people coming to that page don't have any desire to get more information about editing.

On a slightly different topic, both How Wikipedia Works and Wikipedia: The Missing Manual are available free, on-line; would links to those pages be helpful as well as the ISBNs? -- John Broughton (♫♫) 13:06, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

I hope the meetup went well; by coincidence, I'm in Philadelphia today, but with my wife, who is much less interested in talking about Wikipedia.
Thanks for the suggestion re LibraryThing.com. I added a bit about myself as an author (nationality, undergraduate degree) but didn't see any place to add a link (say, to my user page at Wikipedia). LibraryThing still looks a bit rough around the edges (that's why is says beta, I guess); I also tried to post a response (as a threaded comment) to someone else's posting about W:TMM, but instead (I think) started a new thread. Anyway, it's an interesting site; thanks again for mentioning it. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 19:20, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Easton, Pennsylvania

I have Easton on my back burner at the moment, but sometime in the next few months I'll take another crack at it. Because Wikipedia editing is self-driven, trying to recruit helpers is not very fruitful, other than for projects that center around a "global" topic such U.S. highways or rock music. Also, part of the reason for posting a talk message is that if nobody pipes in, then you can pretty much forge away with what you proposed because either there are no objections or few people care. Since you're the first person to respond, that's pretty much the case here. I appreciate your reply. If you have any suggestions, post them on my home page or the Easton talk page, which is on my watchlist. Thanks. Allreet (talk) 00:27, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Recruiting for Wikipedia is not easy. To me, the key is finding someone who wants to promote their hometown, or their college, or someone who interests them for some particular reason. So far, I have not had any success, although I haven't tried very hard for either Easton, PA, or Lafayette College. Davidt8 (talk) 00:47, 22 March 2009 (UTC)Dthomsen8

One Meridian Plaza

Thanks for your compliment on the One Meridian Plaza article . Working on other Philadelphia skyscrapers articles and including their artwork I hoped to go back and do the same thing for the sculpture you mentioned. I didn't know its name or artist until your message so that was very helpful. I have collected some more information on the building while working on the Residences of the Ritz-Carlton article and planning to add this along with the info on the sculpture soon. That's interesting you saw the fire in person, (Did you happen to take any pictures?) I've only seen the pictures as no video of the fire seems to exist on the internet. Medvedenko (talk) 21:34, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Although I walked over to see the fire the next morning, I doubt that I took any pictures. In any case, it is so long ago that I would not know where to look for them. Now I have lots of digital photos on the hard drives of computers, backed up on CDs at times. I must admit that I am confused by the rules on photos of public art works, so I have not posted photos on Wikipedia Commons. The photo I have of the marker on the back of the concrete base of the sculpture is blurry, but I will post another one fairly soon on Wikimedia Commons. I was in that building on occasion, because well before 1991 Sun Oil Company had offices in the building, when it was known as 3 Girard Plaza. I worked for Sun, but not in that building. --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:03, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Greetings. Please pardon my ignorance as I'm just now learning the process of posting articles. My first article "Team Strawberry" has a !banner requesting several improvements. I have reworked the article considerably and added all the internal/external refs I could find, how do I get it re-evaluated and that banner removed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Yourdailywiki (talkcontribs) 06:40, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Your article on Team Strawberry is much improved by 8 references. I have gone ahead and corrected spelling and punctuation errors for you. Then I removed the references issues from the banner (WP:BB), but I feel that the notability is beyond what I am able to decide. See my remarks on the talk page. I do have a few suggestions for improvements:
  • Join the Wikipedia Cycling project, and look at other articles on team cycling.
  • Make any improvements you can to the Human power article.
  • Look for places to add a link to the Team Strawberry article where it is relevant.
  • Have someone else read the article and look for spelling or punctuation errors.--DThomsen8 (talk) 15:14, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your attention to this. And thanks for the tips that I WILL follow up on. Kind Regards --Yourdailywiki (talk) 18:39, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Just another thanks for your advice and edits to my article. I'm working on resolving the issues and I'll reply as I progress. I did 1)join the cycling project and 2)had someone read the article as you suggested above, and am getting some help there. Still working on the rest. Cheers --Yourdailywiki (talk) 16:37, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Caroline C. Hunter

I have no axe to grind here - put it back to C. BTW you might want to take the stub templates off some of those "C" class articles. – ukexpat (talk) 19:24, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

I never thought you had an axe to grind, I thought maybe you knew something I did not. I remved the last of those stub templates. --DThomsen8 (talk) 19:31, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

David Rittenhouse article

Hello,

As you might have guessed, I didn't really have time to get back to the David Rittenhouse article; to be honest, I had completely forgotten about it, over the past year.

Sadly, I don't have any more time now (I'll be moving in about a month), so I still can't rewrite the article. But please, if you can, remind me occasionally, I'll see what I can do.

Thanks, CielProfond (talk) 02:06, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Template error.

There is an error with the infobox template, but I do not see what it is. Help needed.--DThomsen8 (talk) 01:58, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

  • HELPME TAGS ARE NOT FOR ARTICLES. THEY ARE ONLY FOR USER TALK PAGES. Anyway, the problem was that the infobox in question was deleted ages ago and somehow never got removed from the article. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Many ottersOne hammerHELP) 02:28, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
From what I can tell, there is no error. Rather, it appear to me that you are attempting to place in the article a nonexistent infobox template. In order to use a particular template name, the template has to exist. To put it another way, simply making up a logical name and placing it in an article in the form of existing templates does not create the template. Existing infobox templates may be explored at Category:Infobox templates. If there was a prior template that was deleted, it was not under the name you used. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:35, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

There is an error with the infobox template, but I do not see what it is. Help needed. {{help}} --DThomsen8 (talk) 02:49, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi -- there doesn't seem to be a problem with the templates on Talk:Henry William de Saussure, and I don't see any infobox templates on the main page at all. Can you explain why you think there's a problem? Tim Pierce (talk) 03:15, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
If you go back one edit in the history of the article, you'll see a red-linked infobox template: Template:Infobox United State Mint official. This is what this is about. However, that template has never existed, thus my reply above.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:18, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
So, no further attention is needed. --DThomsen8 (talk) 03:21, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Links

Thanks for your contributions. I'd like to mention to you that Republican is a common words in English, and has many meanings outside of US politics. When describing someone's politics, it would be a good idea to link to Republican Party (United States), which is the article about the US political party. Thanks. Talk:Human equivalent

Could you take a look at my recent response to your comment on this page Talk:Human equivalent. I believe the article was created under a false pretense if that is not to strong of language to use. Your opinion please and suggestion for a way forward concerning this? skip sievert (talk) 15:28, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

I went ahead and nominated this article for deletion. Please join in the discussion on deletion by going to the article and following the link to discussion. This is my first deletion nomination, so I am on the learning curve on this action. (However, WP:BB)--DThomsen8 (talk) 19:16, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Well... thats one more than I have done. Thanks for getting involved. skip sievert (talk) 19:51, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Since the creator editor has agreed to the deletion, how does it actually happen? I am still learning the process. --DThomsen8 (talk) 00:36, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
I don't know, but I think it just goes through the process like any other A.f.d. and the Wiki bureaucrats carry through with it now ... but, I am sure it is spelled out in the guidelines, somewhere. I noticed three other articles also that the user made to source books by himself [1] and [2] and [3] or so it looks. skip sievert (talk) 01:16, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

Articles in question

Dthomsen8, with your permission, in this section I would like to throw some articles your way that I have questions about. Since I am still learning Wiki policies I stumble on things that I'm unclear about. Rather than sifting through pages of policy, a quick question/answer can resolve the issue quickly. In your own words or even just to point me to where the answer is. You seem to be a learned user here and I would value your feedback.

  • Re: Shiraz Minwalla - What qualifies this person to have a biography on any encyclopedia? To me it smells like a resume. There are no references. The talk page has no discussion. --Yourdailywiki (talk) 21:33, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
  • Re: Handelshochschule Leipzig - Are all learning institutions eligible to have an article? If not, what qualifies this college? The history section is dwarfed by the Program list. There are no references and there is no discussion on it's talk page. What makes this NOT simply an advertisment? --Yourdailywiki (talk) 21:33, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
That person has a rather thin article, but the details are so technical, I don't know what to say. High schools are rarely deleted as not notable, and more advanced institutions not at all, unless, of course they are some kind of a diploma mill without accreditation. I will look at these in more detail, and perhaps add a template questioning why they are there. --DThomsen8 (talk) 22:35, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
Or just to add some citation? How do we know that Minwalla is any of those things... --Yourdailywiki (talk) 00:25, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Minwalla is legit, just needs more citation to verify all the claims. --Yourdailywiki (talk) 00:35, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
I added two templates to Minwalla to call attention to problems. The dead link can probably be repaired. See Wp:DEADLINK for details and techniques. Also note that there are ways to combat Link rot when articles are written. --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:37, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
I added a no reference template to the Handelshochschule article, and described a street address and coordinates problem on the talk page. I don't know how to correct those problems, or how to derive the coordinates (latitude and longitude) from a German street address. I can do it for US street addresses, and have provided coord info for several articles and for images. Never feel bad about being unable to improve an article or solve problems, if you can leave templates and information for others to carry the work forward. --DThomsen8 (talk) 02:01, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Sustainability measurement

Hi DThomsen, thanks for your input to the the Human equivalent article which I contributed. Comments on my editing generally come from only one editor, Skipsievert. There is another article I contributed to called Sustainability measurement. This seems to be right in an area (measurement) of interest to yourself. You might like to read the discussion on this article's talk page which started out called Sustainability accounting and was later changed to Sustainability measurement. It is typical of the editing comment on many other pages - especially the article on Sustainability, the American technate and elsewhere. Try reading through archives of the Sustainability article. You can form your own opinion. Granitethighs (talk) 02:18, 17 May 2009 (UTC)

Could you please check how the page looks like now and revert the picture you displaced to where it was, assuming good faith. Margin of Appreciation

Hi I've just removed the EU template you added to Margin of appreciation. Its all a bit confusing but the European Court of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights is a product of the Council of Europe. The European Court of Justice is a product of the European Union. The two are often confused! 14:17, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I was confused, as many Americans may be. Is there a Council of Europe template? --DThomsen8 (talk) 14:21, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
No the nearest thing appears to be WikiProject Human rights. Don't worry us Brits are just as confused - it doesn't help that the institutions have identical flags. Its quite common for British people to think the Human Rights Act has something to do with the European Union. 14:29, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
The Margin of appreciation article slides right over from the European Court of Human Rights in the beginning over to the European Court of Justice in the Concepts section, adding to the confusion. Apparently the concept or doctrine can be applied by European Union courts and the European Court of Human Rights to reduce the power of the European Commission. I would like to add to the discussion, but today I have other obligations. Since this is on my talk page, I will be reminded of it. The rather minor article on the doctrine leads far afield! --DThomsen8 (talk) 15:25, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Typefaces advice

You need to do one of two things

  1. merge them into the main articles, which should be easy enough--this is what I would do.
  2. Add specific references and a discussion. If you can do that, remove the tag, but be aware that someone will certainly send the article to WP:AFD and you will need to defend it there.

DGG (talk) 01:56, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

I see that another editor has joined me in opposing deletion of some of the articles. My inclination right now is to wait and see what happens. No deletions will be made immediately, and I would suspect that given two or more editors opposed to deletion, no Administrator will do a deletion, but will suggest just what you mention, the AfD option instead. Meanwhile, I can consult with people who know a lot more about typography than I do, although I am somewhat familiar with fonts from web development work. --DThomsen8 (talk) 02:23, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
