Long Eighteenth Century edit

Hi Dthomsen8, in response to the removal of "long" from the phrase "long eighteenth century" at Eliza Haywood, I want to add that "the long eighteenth century" refers to a time period that stretches beyond 1700-1799 to include some other significant historical events/movements (see 18th century). In the case of Haywood and other many other writers of the period, she's often studied in the period historians refer to as the long eighteenth century.Jane Bond (talk) 15:47, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ah, I continue to learn the unexpected. Is there some way to incorporate what you have told me into this and related articles? Let me think about it, but first I will change the text to have a link to 18th century, which does have an explanation of both "long" and "short" 18th century.--DThomsen8 (talk) 16:51, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I wonder if adding a page for the long 18th century specifically would help. The brief discussion at 18th century does help, but the "long" has been added only relatively recently, and though it is widely used in historical and literary studies, I don't know a lot about the reasoning behind the term (other than the inclusion of certain events/movements, as I've mentioned). The page could then give more of the background and specific information. I'm not sure I'm the candidate to work on the page, but perhaps a page on the long 18th century could be requested. Jane Bond (talk) 20:39, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Google has provided books, blogs, and websites about the long 18th century. (http://long18th.wordpress.com/) There is plenty of information about it, but I have plenty of other opportunities to contribute to Wikipedia, and this would be a big distraction for me at this time. I can add some references to the 18th century article, but I will like any serious expansion of the subject, either in that article or in another article, to those more interested in the subject. --DThomsen8 (talk) 23:42, 13 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I added a comment on the 18th century:talk page to suggest more about the long 18th century.

Northeast Philadelphia GAR edit

Hi, I saw your comment on this article's talk page that real-life commitments interfere with the one-week hold. I have absolutely no problem extending the hold (there's really no need or benefit to having a rigid deadline unless nobody is doing anything to improve the article, which is clearly not the case here). Enjoy your time with the houseguests. The article can wait. GaryColemanFan (talk) 20:05, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The houseguests arrive tomorrow night from Malaysia, but today and tomorrow are still getting-ready days. Thanks for cutting us some slack. I was adding political citations when I saw this message.--DThomsen8 (talk) 20:11, 15 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I added the last of the cites -- too late, apparently, since the article's been demoted by the "powers" that be. If you want to resubmit it, I'll help, but I don't have the patience to deal with those bureaucrats, myself. Coemgenus 15:10, 19 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Narragansett Council edit

Hi. I completely forgot to respond, for which I apologize -- was busy at another article. In my view the prose in the Narragansett Council article is still a bit rough, but I did copy-edit most of the article. I'd like to finish, and have the article watched, so will get over there in a day or so. Anyway, sorry for forgetting! Truthkeeper88 (talk) 19:55, 26 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Linkrot edit

I saw you had a question about combating the dreaded linkrot. It's really easy, and there are two ways to go about it.

  • First, is WebCite, which is a web service at http://www.webcite.com that will archive almost any page instantly for you. The second is by using the Internet Archive, which is described at Wikipedia:Using the Wayback Machine.
  • The next step is to incorporate these archives into your standard {tl|cite news}} reference. Here's an example below. It's the same in every way as a normal cite template, except that it has an "archiveurl=" and "archivedate=" parameter. Just stick in the WebCite archive url or the Internet Archive url plus the date, and you're all set.
    • Schimmel, Bruce (September 22–28, 2005). "You Need Daylin Leach". Philadelphia City Paper. Philadelphia: Philadelphia City Paper. Archived from the original on 2009-09-07.{{cite news}}: CS1 maint: date format (link)

I also saw that you have an interest in PA politics. I may seek to make a "Politics and Government" sub-project of WP:Pennsylvania. Would you be interested in helping?--Blargh29 (talk) 01:21, 9 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why do you seek a sub-project? I am interested in Philadelphia and PA politics, but I don't put much effort into those topics here on WikiPedia, compared with other fields, especially history. George Meade house edit

Can you verify or find a source for the story I added to the George Meade talk page about his house? --DThomsen8 (talk) 12:13, 13 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I don't have a source for this. The Meade article is currently only lightly cited, so until (or if) I go through and do a big verifiability sweep, it's innocuous enough as is for now. By the way, although you might feel that a picture of a plaque is copyrighted, you can certainly type in its text as a quote if you cite it. Hal Jespersen (talk) 23:07, 13 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Peter Sinclair (1819) edit

I noticed that you left a {{Expert-subject}} tag on this article regarding some vandalism on this article. It seemed as if the only vandalism was the result of a one recent edit by an anonymous user. There is an "undo" function that can be used to revert a specific edit when viewing the article history which seemed to put the article back to normal. Thank you for pointing out the problem. --Big_iron (talk) 21:15, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your help. The vandalism was mixed in with the valid text, so I should have done an undo rather than leaving a message. I stumble on these situations from the "Random article" choice, but I learn a lot about various subjects, and sometimes about the technical Wiki things to know, too. --DThomsen8 (talk) 00:39, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Northeast GA edit

I suppose we could resubmit it for a to GA approval. Coemgenus 13:46, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I did tag the statements that needed cites with citation needed tags, and marked the dead link. However when I looked again after seven days little had been done so the article was de-listed. Please submit it at WP:GAN if you feel it is up to scratch. Or you could request a WP:Peer Review. Jezhotwells (talk) 15:03, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
So, are there any statements remaining that need cites? Is the dead link still there? I will look again, but if you can be specific, that would help.--DThomsen8 (talk) 15:09, 28 October 2009 (UTC)Reply
I will repeat, as you seem to have problems understanding what I wrote previously: I did tag the statements that needed cites with citation needed tags, and marked the dead link. If the tags are no longer there then it is possible that the concerns have been addressed. The GA criteria are to be found at WP:GACR. If you feel the article satisfies those then you may nominate it at WP:GAN, instructions on that page. I delisted the article during the GA sweeps as it did not meet the criteria at that time and no-one addressed the concerns within seven days. That is the end of my involvement. Thank you. Jezhotwells (talk) 09:12, 29 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

OpenType edit

Hi. Twice in the past three days you've used AWB to clean up OpenType#Script tags. While your work is much appreciated, on both occasions the amendments changed <tt>arab</tt> to <tt>Arab</tt> despite the fact that this is an OpenType script tag and so is required to be lowercase, and despite my having added a comment in the adjacent wikitext after reverting the first change: <!-- note that arab is intentionally lower case because it is a normalized tag -->. I'm not familiar with AWB but it may be that you can adjust it so that you can check the text that it is amending to prevent inappropriate changes such as these. Apologies if you were already checking the text and the amendments slipped through the net! Thanks though for your other work. — Richardguk (talk) 15:20, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

It is too easy to use AWB without understanding the consequences, and I must admit that I am still on the learning curve. In this particular case, I have added (sic) in the paragraph, which causes AWB to issue a warning that this exists in the text, and to use extra caution. Thank you for calling it to my attention. I learned something from it.--DThomsen8 (talk) 20:38, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the positive response – it felt a bit Groundhog Day for a moment so I'm glad you took my feedback in good spirit! I've done a search on AWB and sic and found buried in the reference manual that AWB is set to pick up on the {{Sic}} and {{Typo}} templates, and that these templates can also be used to split words as a double safeguard against spellchecking; I'll update OpenType accordingly. So we both learnt something! — Richardguk (talk) 21:33, 3 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

New Alphabet edit

Hi, you've used AWB twice in New Alphabet, changing Architype to Archetype. However the typeface collection is with an 'i' (probably word play of Archive and Archetype). Municipal authorities stubs edit

Glad to see you're on board! I do have some concern that someone would tag all these for speedy or make a huge AFD, so we need to make sure we get some consensus that these are solidly notable. If we don't hear anything from the VP in the next few days, I think we can proceed.

As far as bots go, it looks like we can have the bot do pretty much whatever we like, so a talkpage would be a good idea. Also, if you're tagging for the Philadelphia WikiProject, I think you could as for a bot to tag everything within a certain category, like Category:Philadelphia.--Blargh29 (talk) 15:58, 9 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Can we get the bot written? --DThomsen8 (talk) 17:42, 9 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
When I go down the list of Philadelphia articles with no assessment or quality rating, I look at each talk page as I go along, often I look at the article itself, and I provide a class= and importance= based on what I learn. A few times I delete the Philadelphia template entirely, deciding that it is not really relevant to Philadelphia at all. For example, a New Hope rock band is not relevant to Philadelphia unless they have some other connection than being from New Hope, PA. Also, I add section names to the talk pages, and sometimes I add a comment myself. ITW, this is a disciplined way to survey a great many Philadelphia articles and make improvements as I go along. The template is only a part of the effort. I recently did the same thing for the Typography project. --DThomsen8 (talk) 18:09, 9 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

So it looks like we're going to have to stick to lists by county. That's fine with me. The next step is to get a good template for the county tables. I suggest something more than just a list. Maybe a table with Municipal Authority/function/City/External link entries. I don't really know how to construct those, so maybe you can look around? Maybe some info at Meta or
Sortable table
Municipal Authority Function City External link
SEPTA Public transit Philadelphia http://www.septa.com

Yeah, I like that. You like it too? If so, I can write a quick script to mine the data from my .xls and we can get these rolling in the next day or 2.--Blargh29 (talk) 17:03, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Municipal authorities example edit

List of Philadelphia County municipal authorities

Philadelphia County municipal authorities
Municipal Authority Acronym Function City External link
Center City District CCD Other Philadelphia http://www.oldcitydistrict.org
Old City Special Services District OCSSD Other Philadelphia http://www.centercityphila.org
Philadelphia Housing Authority PHA Housing Philadelphia http://www.pha.phila.gov
Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority SEPTA Public transit Philadelphia http://www.septa.com

Here is an expanded table, with a new column (Acronym), links, and more lines of data, so I can try the sort on Function. The Function in the government database is filled with bureaucratic jargon, and in some cases seems to be wrong. The External link should have "http://" as a prefix on the URL. Please create sandbox tables for Philadelphia and Allegheny Counties. The Pittsburgh plus suburbs is a good test of the city column. I suspect that we might want to translate the Function data to less bureaucratic terms in some instances. --DThomsen8 (talk) 18:30, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • OK, that looks good. One thing: very few MAs are known by acronyms, so I don't think that having the acronyms in a separate column is a good idea. Also, when linked, those acronyms just go to DAB pages and aren't really helpful. BUt, for stuff that is known primarily by its acronym, like SEPTA, we can list it as Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). How's that sound? I'll start on the sandbox later tonight or the weekend.--Blargh29 (talk) 21:26, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

HEY! All done! Thanks for working with me on all that. That went pretty smoothly. So, now, how do you want to work on getting this process expanded to other states? I'll be honest--I'm not all that interested in working on that personally, but I can help you expand the coordination elsewhere. I'd like to write a short blurb for the Wikipedia Signpost about what we just did,so maybe other people in other states can be inspired. I can also write a step-by-step guide to manipulating the data within Excel to get the tables. --Blargh29 (talk) 06:20, 19 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alexander Hamilton Article edit

Dthomsen8.

Yes, the Alexander Hamilton article is really still in need of significant improvements, most of which are being/will be actively prevented by one of its most common editors. This was very frustrating for me, and one of the reasons I essentially left Wikipedia. If you're at all skeptical about this claim, do your homework about Hamilton, and try to make make just one significant, but factually-incontestable and thoroughly-cited change to the article, and you will likely become acquainted with the active impediment to this article's improvement. I do hope you either choose to take it on, or pass it on to someone who might be willing to do so. Thanks, AdRem (talk) 05:35, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for explaining that. Wikipedia has ways of dealing with such editors, but it is on a case-by-case basis. Hamilton was a critical person in getting the First Bank of the United States adopted in Washington's administration. Perhaps I will give making a change a try. --DThomsen8 (talk) 16:18, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Categorising Talk Pages edit

Hi, Just an FYI, in general, we dont tend to categorise talk pages, especially if the non talk page is categorised

Some Talk page templates do that, for extra stuff

Reedy 16:12, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Probably I did not make myself clear. If we are adding 67 list articles about Pennsylvania Municipal authorities, then the talk page should have {{WikiProject Pennsylvania|class=list|importance=low}} on the talk page for each of those articles, so editors interested in improving Pennsylvania articles can find them. If the article is about Philadelphia authorities, then {{WikiProject Philadelphia|class=list|importance=low}} should also be on the talk page, and likewise for Pittsburgh. This idea is not to put a [[Category:Pennsylvania]] on a talk page. I think this is a valid distinction.--DThomsen8 (talk) 16:28, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
You are doing it again to the AWB pages. Please be mindful of what is being undertaken. billinghurst (talk) 23:53, 14 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

At this point, I will just continue to progressively write stubs for the larger municipal authorities.--Blargh29 (talk) 00:32, 20 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

As far as I can make out, the disaster started with a very ignorant presumption that Vedic and Classical meters belonged together as a single topic. It sort of snowballed from there. Right now, fixing the mishmash would be a substantial job. Sadly I have neither the time nor the inclination. Thanks for the heads up and your concern, though. Maybe you can prevent further entropic decay on that page. rudra (talk) 05:47, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nothing wrong with the dab page, as far as I can see.:-) (Some further remarks on my talk page, in case you're interested.) Cheers! rudra (talk) 18:57, 29 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of PMMA List edit

A tag has been placed on PMMA List requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. andy (talk) 13:15, 30 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free image File:Public Record leader.png edit

Thanks for uploading File:Public Record leader.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 05:34, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

The image is no longer an orphan, it is now in use in The Public Record (newspaper) article. --DThomsen8 (talk) 17:50, 13 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
