No, I want--and Wikipedia requires--that you add a comment to the photo's page announcing that you are putting the photo under the GFDL. Kirkcaldy transliteration edit

Hi Dimitri, I notice you've started a Russian Kirkcaldy stub. You may know already but the "l" in Kirkcaldy is silent (a remnant of the original Pictish name) so I'm not sure if it's appropriate to have the "л" in the Russian transliteration of the name. I don't know if Kirkcaldy already has a "conventional" Russian spelling as "Керколди", despite the pronunciation, but as it is a relatively small town I would have thought maybe not. Just thought you'd like to know. Mutt Lunker (talk) 13:06, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your note. In the Big Soviet Encyclopedia there is an article: Керколди (Kirkcaldy), город и порт в Великобритании, в Шотландии, у залива Ферт-оф-Форт... etc. In fact William Kirkcaldy of Grange in the Russian translation of Stephan Zweig's "Maria Stuart" (1935) [М., "Художественная литература", 1991. Пер. с нем. - Р. Гальперина] is spelled as Сэр Уильям Керколди Грейнджский. So, I think it is already a "conventional" Russian spelling. Regards -- Dmitrismirnov (talk) 15:41, 23 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Yakov Frenkel.jpg edit

A tag has been placed on File:Yakov Frenkel.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image licensed as "for non-commercial use only," "non-derivative use" or "used with permission," it has not been shown to comply with the limited standards for the use of non-free content. [1], and it was either uploaded on or after 2005-05-19, or is not used in any articles. If you agree with the deletion, there is no need to do anything. If, however, you believe that this image may be retained on Wikipedia under one of the permitted conditions then:

  • state clearly the source of the image. If it has been copied from elsewhere on the web you should provide links to: the image itself, the page which uses it and the page which contains the license conditions.
  • add the relevant copyright tag.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. Your inquiry edit

Hi, Dmitry! Thank you for your inquiry and welcome to Wikipedia! You have good points, and it is also good to know that you are the person about whom the article is about.

The changes I made were strictly procedural. Dmitry Smirnov itself is a disambiguation page, the sole purpose of which is to provide links to articles which readers can reasonably be expected to search under "Dmitry Smirnov". The spelling of such a disambiguation page's title is chosen in accordance with our romanization of Russian guidelines, and that choice is independent of the spellings of the actual articles listed on the disambiguation page. Also, we have certain rules as to how the disambiguation pages should be formatted, which is why I formatted the entry about you the way I did. I'll be happy to explain this further, if you like.

Regarding the actual article about you, the spelling choice depends on what is actually used in English. Currently the article has a number of links to pages in English all of which use "Dmitri", and "Dmitri" is the spelling you yourself prefer. That is quite sufficient for our purposes, and this is also something I missed when making my edits earlier today, which is why I have just moved the page to Dmitri Smirnov (composer). As for the "composer" part, while there may be other composers by this exact same name, we currently don't have articles about any of them (and not all of them may even be notable enough to have an article written about them). If that ever changes, the article about you will most certainly be moved to a form using your patronymic, but we don't do such moves preemptively. I hope this resolves the matter. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any further concerns—I'll be happy to assist!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); March 22, 2011; 18:18 (UTC)

Image of Modest Tchaikovsky edit

Hi there. Some time back you uploaded this image of Modest Tchaikovsky.

I am currently revising the article on Modest's brother Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and would possibly like to use this picture. However, without knowing the photographer or where the photo was first printed, I cannot determine whether it would fall under Public Domain in the US. If you had any of this information of remember where you found this photo, it might help me in my search. Please contact me on my talk page. Thanks. Jonyungk (talk) 01:50, 21 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I do not remember exactly which exactly old book I scanned it from... I am sure that it is in public domain because the photo was made more than 100 years ago. Modest lived in 1850–1916. The photo is printed practically in all Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's biographies with no indication of photographer or precise date, but it looks that it was taken in the 19th century. Summarise the quotes like this

One well-known category of drawings is fully documented. This comprises the so-called "visionary heads", drawn by Blake from what he claimed were visions of a variety of historical characters who appeared at his command and "sat" for their portraits… It seems clear to me that Varley took this curious pastime a great deal more seriously than did Blake. To the latter it was a satisfaction to employ his faculty of vivid memory and imagination in the production of interesting characterizations of a varicty of people... Blake sometimes drew them with such conviction that Varley seems to have regarded them as actual portraits.

Blake claimed that among his visions he saw different historical characters, who would sit for him to draw their portraits.[1] The biographer Keynes observed that Varley took these visions and the drawings that Blake produced from them so seriously that he regarded them as genuine portraits of the historical characters.[1] These drawings are known collectively as the "visionary heads".[1]

The following parts of the quote are entirely superfluous to fact:

comprises so-called
Variety
Curious pastime
a great deal more
To the latter it was a satisfaction to employ his faculty of vivid memory and imagination in the production of interesting characterizations of a varicty of people.. (opnion)
sometimes
such conviction

Get at what the author is actually saying, and loose the rest, unless it conjures the atmosphere of the event first hand (which this doesn't).

Amandajm (talk) 14:03, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I afraid it is incorrect and much worse that the quotation itself. Please leave as it is. Dmitrismirnov (talk) 14:06, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

You don't seem to have got the message that you cannot lift slabs of someone else's writing and make an article. Rewrite it in your own words. Don't use what I have written. Summarise in the way that uses the information. Keynes isn't writing first hand. He has researched, and is adding opinion. Amandajm (talk) 14:11, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I left my answer to you at Talk:Visionary Heads. As I told you, I did my best, but you as anyone can change it as you wish. However please do not spoil. Dmitrismirnov (talk) 14:17, 10 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Blake images from Google Art edit

Hey Dmitrismirnov! Thanks for all of the great work that you have been doing lately. FYI, the images that you have been pulling from Google Art Project may not be as representative of the physical objects as similar ones from the William Blake Archive. Since starting the internship with the archive, I have been given some insight into the process for uploading scans and copies for the William Blake Archive and for Google Art. The Blake Archive colour corrects the scans so that they can compare to the eye's interaction with them, while on the other hand Google has a reputation of not always correcting or ensuring faithfulness to the original work. Take for example the two different scans of Jerusalem Cope E, Object 41, the Blake Archive's is more similar to watercolour, while the version you uploaded from Google Art project has a much more granny prominent dark colors (File:Jerusalem_The_Emanation_of_The_Giant_Albion,_copy_E,_object_41_Detail.jpg). The first seems to be more accurate, considering the original medium. Also, since WP:Blake is being supported by the Blake Archive and they have a better Academic reputation then Google Art, it would probably be within best courtesy to upload files from the more authoritative and affiliated organization when they have scans available (which is not the case with works like the Rossetti Manuscript). Hope that thought helps and keep up the good work! Sadads (talk) 22:48, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

I agree. In fact I took these files from the Blake Archive source=http://www.blakearchive.org/exist/blake/archive/object.xq?objectid=jerusalem.e.illbk.41&java=no The detail (cropped) picture looks a bit different because I added contrast to make better readable the inverted text on the left Dmitrismirnov (talk) 23:05, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Cool beans, the templates with the Google Art Project Templates must have been throwing me off, and I didn't read the description closely enough on the cropped version. Thanks again for all the great work! Sadads (talk) 14:42, 17 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Poems from songs! edit

Great work on the last couple articles about the Songs of Innocence and of Experience! Keep up the good work. While you are working on those though, would you mind leaving Laughing Song (Songs of Innocence), "Night" (Songs of Innocence), "Spring" (Songs of Innocence), "The Little Boy Lost" (Songs of Innocence) and "The Little Boy Found" (Songs of Innocence) uncreated? The poetry class I am working with this semester is going to be writing those articles for an assignment, and we should have articles up within the next month or two. Copy/Paste plagiarism at Beulah (Blake) edit

Hey Dmitrismirnov, I just got a chance to look at Beulah (Blake) and noticed that much of the material was lifted directly from various sites, and not properly attributed (see the changes I made). I would strongly recommend taking a look at Wikipedia:Plagiarism#Plagiarism_on_Wikipedia to see why we don't directly lift language and ideas from other author's work. I don't remember much of your earlier Blake related work doing this kind of direct copy/paste from source materials. Without parphrasing, quoting or some other type of rewriting with attribution, plagiarism both decreases the credibility of Wikipedia and opens it up for Copyright Violations. Were you aware that you were doing this? Sadads (talk) 04:56, 25 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

I understand the problem. Thanks for fixing this. Now it is much better. Dmitrismirnov (talk) 08:32, 25 October 2013 (UTC)Reply
Can you go back through your earlier work, and make sure that you don't have moments of plagiarism like that. It opens up your work to criticism and/or reversion similar to the type proposed by User:Ottava Rima on The Mental Traveler. I always try to preempt the problem by making sure that I summarize without any copying from the original source, when writing my draft articles.
Also, on an unrelated note, I responded at Talk:The Mental Traveler, Sadads (talk) 15:17, 25 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

We noticed though that when you edited Beulah (Blake), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bunyan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Deletion discussion about Andrew Solomon (Blake scholar) edit

Hello, Dmitrismirnov,

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Andrew Solomon (Blake scholar) should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Andrew Solomon (Blake scholar) .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Alexander Vustin, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Olga Sedakova (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Proposed deletion of File:Gubaidulina©photo by DSmirnov81.jpg edit

The file File:Gubaidulina©photo by DSmirnov81.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

unused, low-res, no obvious use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:01, 10 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
