Since approximately 2012, I've written Wikipedia articles, for companies and individuals who meet Wikipedia notability guidelines, on a "for fee" basis.
I did not disclose my paid contributor status until Feb. 2014 when a notice appeared on Wikipedia about paid contributors. I posted my status here in my About section. However, I didn't sign it because I didn't think I needed to, this being my Talk page and all.
Double unfortunately, I did not keep up with the paid contributor discussion nor read the guidelines and thus did not disclose on the articles I wrote or edited that I was a paid contributor.
On 4/29/2015, after being instructed to do so, I added a Disclosure notice to the pages to which I made contributions or created.
This entire process has actually been an awesome learning experience. I've learned that being nice means people are helpful and nice back. I've also learned more about the Wikipedia community and how it works and thinks.
If I were to do anything here that's constructive and to atone for my actions, I'd help create user-friendly guides on how to use Wikipedia. The reason I helped so many companies / individuals create their articles is because the instructions and rules are quite convoluted. You can spend hours trying to figure out how to do one thing. I was glad to see that you'd greatly improved the article Column Technologies since I'd removed it. However, I noticed that you removed the {{orphan}} template, while the article remains an orphan, per WP:ORPHAN. Thank you for not making a lot of drama over this. I think you maybe missed a couple? Some other things:
  • there is a sizable chunk of the community that thinks paid editing should be banned, but the community has been unable to come to any consensus over that. If you are not aware of how controversial paid editing is, please let me know, and i can inform you. The core of the issue is the tension between protecting the privacy of editors, and protecting the integrity of Wikipedia.
  • since the community has not been able to ban paid editing, it is still permitted. We do our best manage COI but everything is voluntary. So again, I appreciate that you have not created drama.
  • Here are things that would be great if you would do going forward.
    • Please declare your COI on your article draft. Disclosure is the key to managing COI.
    • Please submit your articles through the AfC process instead of creating them directly, so they can be reviewed for NPOV before they go live. This kind of review, is the 2nd key element in managing COI.
    • Please consider adding a declaration to your userpage, listing the articles you have created or edited for consideration
Finally, you may want to meet CorporateM, a long-term editor here who often edits for pay, and is very transparent about it.

I've been following the debate about paid editing and when a notice appeared across all of Wikipedia last year about it, that is when I updated my Talk page to state I was a paid editor. I didn't realized I had done it out of order or that I had to sign it, seeing it was my own talk page. :-/
I know the community doesn't like it. I won't make excuses for doing it. I do want to say in my defense that I have always endeavored to create articles that met Wikipedia guidelines. I turn away more requests for articles than I actually write.
I'm happy to work with you on ensuring the pages I've created have disclosure notices and to explain any citations or research. I do respect Wikipedia and the community and while I have been paid for writing, I actually enjoy the process and the research and usually put in more time than what I'm paid for.

That all makes sense. You will do as you will; in my view some of your editing is quite good, btw, where you had sufficient sources. (this is the problem with paid editing; quite often there is no article or only a stub b/c the subject really isn't NOTABLE and once an editor enters the game of creating something for pay, they have to do crap editing to create something - they cannot edit well due to lack of good sources) I hope you put your talents to use in WP where you don't have a conflict. anyway, good luck to you. of course you are. it usually goes better if you acknowledge that you created the article for pay as opposed to someone else bringing it up. but be prepared for some cruel flack - people can be nasty to paid editors. if you conduct yourself there as you have with me, i am hopeful people will respond to you well. good luck.
