Vandal tags

Thank you for reverting vandalism on Wikipedia!

Be sure to put warning tags on the vandal's user talk page (such as {{subst:test}}, {{subst:test2}}, {{subst:test3}}, {{subst:test4}}). Add each of these tags on the vandal's talk page, in sequential order, after each instance of vandalism. Adding warnings to the talk page assists administrators in determining whether or not the user should be blocked. If the user continues to vandalize pages after you add the {{subst:test4}} tag, request administrator assistance at Request for Intervention. Again, thank you for helping to make Wikipedia better.

Hi DH85868993, thanks for your interest in fighting vandalism on Wikipedia! In answer to your question, no, I don't type it out each time; I use the 'Admin-like RC Patrol tools' addon which gives extra buttons to your wikipeda pages that let you revert pages and fight vandalism much more efficiently ^_^ There are a lot of anti-vandal scripts and suchlike out there, but personally I think VoA's are the best; you can easily enable them for yourself by editing your User:DH85868993/monobook.js and adding:

Team vs. Constructor/Entrant

Hi to you too DH85868993 (catchy...!). I am trying to make an impact on the whole team/constructor/entrant confusion, well spotted. We did have a discussion on the WP:F1 talk page a couple of months ago, but it seems to have been archived and has gone cold. For myself, I would agree with your two part approach, but I would prefer that we use the proper terms "entrant" and "constructor", rather than the rather nebulous "team". Using entrant allows private entries, independent and works teams to be identified properly. Take a look at John Surtees's results. I have been trying to find a way of phrasing the problem that might get through to the post-1980 neophytes who didn't see the issue last time. I might have another crack at it. Hi DH85868993 - thanks for your note on my talk page. I fundamentally agree with you and Pyrope on the team/entrant thing (In fact I think it was me that started the previous conversation Pyrope mentioned....). I'm not the greatest completer/finisher in the world however, so you might need to keep pushing on it and remind me to support you when you need it :D. It's something we could pick up in the style guide too, which I will have a look at (feel free to nag me if I don't...) 4u1e 22:40, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
To summarise we need to change the following areas:
  • Categories (constructor/entrant)
  • Tables of results in race, championship and driver articles (lots of these, but while there is a common standard it has not yet been applied to anything like all the articles, so that should defuse complaints about the amount of work somewhat!). Pyrope's model for John Surtees looks good to me.
  • Language used in entrant/constructor articles. In a similar way to the recent conversation on UK drivers, we could set standard wording along the lines of "Racers'R'us was a British racing car constructor and/or entrant" for all articles.
  • We need a good definition of entrant and constructor to direct people to. One of the comments I got in Peer Review for Brabham was that readers new to the topic didn't understand why they were being told that it was both a constructor and an team. In that specific case I ended up calling it a manufacturer as it built so many cars outside F1. There's some stuff in the (inaccurately titled!) List of Formula One constructors, written from memory, so may not be 100% accurate. There's also stuff in some of the F1 main articles, IIRC. 4u1e 22:40, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I see you're 'being bold'! Good work. I usually leave widespread changes to mature a bit longer on the talk pages before implementing them, but perhaps I'm too cautious! Are you planning on going through the season pages and picking up the necessary changes now that the column heading is 'constructor' not team? For example, in 1977 Formula One season, we've got Williams (i.e. Williams Grand Prix Engineering) as a constructor, when I think they used a March chassis that year, their first after Frank left Wolf-Williams. That would fit with the chassis type number (761) given in the table anyway. There are probably similar problems lurking, I can have a look if you're not planning to. I've had a quick look at years I know to be problem areas and have only picked up that one year for Williams and Larrousse in 1987-1990. Hi. I see that you are going for the changes, and good work with the new category. BUT... make sure that you are using it correctly in EVERY case. For instance, you assigned Alta to the entrant category. Alta only ever built cars for privateers and never entered a car themselves. People don't mind proactive editors, in fact good on you for taking on a large task, but accuracy is all. Pyrope 07:54, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

I didn't check absolutely all Alta links, but all the ones that I have seen have been in the format "xxxx|Alta", so I left them alone. There may be some double-redirect problems if the main page name changes again, but I hope that I got it right this time. Formula One Subcats

Wow! I was just on the BMW Sauber page, wondering whether or not to create a category for it. I can see how creating a cat for every constructor might be time consuming, but in time, won't those cars without a subcat look like an anomaly? Renault F1 vs. Renault Sport

Hi. I just wanted to raise a flag with you. Renault F1 only refers to the team which was Benneton and is now Renault. However it is my belief that links in the mid and early 1990s and before should indeed point to Renault Sport, i.e. as engine supplier. That's why on for example, European Grand Prix I changed Fernando Alonso's Renault to Renault F1 but left Villeneuve and Schumacher's Renault links as they were. Worth a further discussion I think? Sorry, I didn't know there had been a new description. I agree with your change of position - particularly the point about Renault describing all their F1 involvement under the "Renault F1" name. After all, who are we to disagree with the company itself. Regarding the changes being tedious, been there done that and I couldn't agree more. "Surtees-type" Tables

"Hi Pyrope. I'm looking to update some driver career summary tables to "John Surtees format" soon. I believe you've done several (many?) in the past. In the interests of minimising my effort, is there some easy way to get the right colour in each square? Or is it just a matter of copying and pasting the right colour string from the key template each time? (Or do you remember them?) And how do you construct the list of races for each year in the table? Do you construct them by hand each time? Or do you find another table which has the same year and copy and paste? Thank heavens, I thought it would just be me plugging away. I saw your comments on the WPF1 talk page and I reckon you have some sound ideas about tweaking the format to improve it. In terms of constructing the tables I usually just cut and paste the header, either from a previous article or from the table on my userpage. As far as the results colous go, some drivers have intermediate tables which already have the results formatted, so it is just a case of reformatting columns to make sure chassis, engine, number of races, WDC and Points are in the right places. Others I cut and paste from other drivers who competed that season (usually one who ended the year at about the same place), to ensure that the race sequence is correct (and it saves a lot of typing. As far as the colous go, by now I can remember all but the most obscure, but I used to have a second window open with the race results table key source code visible. This shows all the correct colour codes in one screen. The latest one that I have done was Ronnie Peterson, and even with the increased number of races I still think that it looks ok. I tend to use the driver info from gpracing.net192 as a handy resource for chassis and pole/fastest lap details, cross references with other articles and websites of course. Looks good to me, correct on all assumptions as far as I can tell. The one point I will make is that I tend to use the entrant name as registered on the start list, rather than the generic team name. For instance, in 1983 Alboreto drove for the "Benetton Tyrrell Team" rather than TRO. I then link back to the generic page in the usual way. What are your thoughts on this? The most reliable source (in my experience...) is the abovementioned gpracing.192net site. Their Alboreto results are here. I have to admit that I haven't exhaustively checked every single instance, but those that I hace cross-checked with more extensive (but harder to navigate) sites have come up accurately (e.g. AllF1.info or chicaneF1.com). Unfortunately the site is clearly dead, and the driver information navigation links seem to be dead, but googling the driver name followed by the words "whole story" usually brings up the right info first time. There was a lot to do, the Ferrari 312 article was a bit of a mess, a sort of history of all Ferrari's cars, however unrelated, which have ever been called 312, so i've been trying to tidy it all up. Pre-emptive redirects for f1 cars

I like the idea of pre-emptive links and redirects, because then once someone creates an article for say the Tyrrell 010, all the links to it are automatically in place - we don't have to sift through every single Tyrrell Racing link (several hundred of them, it's even worse for Ferraris!) to see which of them should be changes. I see your point about a blue link discouraging people from writing an article, but i think if people are interested, they'll follow the link, see that there's nothing about the car in question and write it - either as the new page or on the Tyrrell page (in which case we can later de-merge it). We could point this out on the talk pages for any articles which are so redirected and also on the F1 project page? Spute 12:28, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi DH85868993. Yeah in the Lotus 72 case i'd agree with you, it'll be easy enough to sort it out, as the Lotus 72 will never have too many links. As for the other case, personally, I'd go for:
  • linked "P160B" and "P160C" to BRM P160, and created BRM P160 as a redirect to BRM, resulting in blue links
for the following reasons:
If someone does ever make "P160B" and "P160C", it'll be quite easy to spot the incorrect links, as there'll never be too many of them.
I think blue links are much more helpful to the general reader/F1 fan. I know it's slightly less easy for people, like you and I, who want to spot articles in need of attention, but we can always mention these on the project pages. What i do think is important is that someone who knows very litte about F1 history can click on a link and instantly get some relevant info, even if it's not yet a full article solely about that car. That's why i did it for Fittipaldi F8C. I thought someone might be looking at, say the page for the McLaren MP4/1 or another 1981 car, and want to know about its competitors. At least with the link to the redirect they find out a bit about Fittipaldi Automotive/Copersucar - a fair bit of interesting F1 history they may never have known, whereas a red link would give them nothing, unless they do a Google search for the car or something. That might seem trivial, but i'm keen to make things as easy as possible particularly as someone who has had computer-related repetitive strain injury problems. Having said that, i'm not too bothered if there's abit of inconsistency in this respect, there's plenty of other stuff to do on wikipedia. Spute 21:06, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that is what I meant! Sorry, I'm usually in a rush when it comes to adding stuff on Wikipedia, although I'm getting slower, I swear :-P. And to answer the second question, I'm not entirely sure whether it should be a footnote or not. Because my head says it should be but my heart says the opposite, IF you know what I mean.

Plus, if I recall in the Italian GP edition (or somewhere like that) Wikipedia got a mention on the Podcast. Now, Wikipedia has a special page devoted to this subject of "mentions of Wikipedia no-matter how slight in the media", but should this mention, if I can pin point the podcast, be included in the article and the Pree-Coverage page?

Driver place of birth

Hi, thanks for your comments. I have discussed, or tried to discuss this with Attilios, but he's fairly rude and very unhelpful. He just likes to come around at random intervals, change what other people have done in an inconsistent way, and never actually add anything to F1 articles. His ideas on the positioning of birth / death places in biography articles are all very well, but he has no intention of doing many, just as many as he feels like doing. Since the rest of us seem quite happy the way they are, i.e. birthplace etc in the first line, I usually revert Attilios' edits after he's got bored and moved on. Months later he will come back and do a few more, and I'll revert them again. Attilios is quite happy to leave unhinged sentences such as "Born in Rome, Driver X started 25 grands prix"... rather than just leave things alone. He's not part of the Wikiproject, knows nothing about F1 by his own admission - he even edited the 2007 Australian Grand Prix article to say that there'd be a car #13 racing this year... I'm sure if we ever want to change all 900+ driver articles to reflect any concensus in how birthplace etc should be included, we can do it consistently, fluently and accurately in our own way, no? IndyCar

I definitely see what you're saying. I didn't intentionally try to make it more confusing, but it seemed to me that there were instances where pointing to a specific series was not appropriate. I think I tried to avoid using open wheel car where possible, but there were articles which tended to speak more to a generic version than anything specific. I've finished with my disambiguation of IndyCar, anyway, but perhaps you could make it a priority on the WP:AOWR so that more people are aware of the disambig page and try to avoid linking to it in the first place.

Basically, I tried to come at it with a perspective of how someone would be clicking if they knew very little about the subject, and I think that reflects most of my edits. If you disagree with them, it won't affend me in the slightest if you change them, but please try to keep them from directing toward IndyCar as it definitely is the wrong place for every single one of those links. However I have corrected your contrib about RHD Alfa Romeo not being produced in South Africa - this is not true, as all RHD Alfas are still being produced with their production numbers prefaces by ZAR - Z => Zuid Afrika, or South Africa. Driver career summary tables

Hi there! Thanks for your comments on my page. The points and WDC positions columns in the tables do look better in bold, don't they? I always used to leave them unbold, but when people came along and bolded them, I thought they looked quite good. I think that bearing in mind only you and I are doing these in any great numbers, what we do might eventually become the norm anyway! I did notice the tables you're doing, I was pleased I wasn't totally alone! I must admit to "hunting and pecking"! I do small ones if I think I'm going to get interrupted, and a big one if I know I have plenty of time. Eventually we'll get through them all. Hi CmdrObot. In a recent edit to Alfa Romeo, you incorrectly changed several instances of “S.p.A.” (the abbreviation for “Società per Azioni”, the Italian version of joint stock company) to “S.p. RE: F1 Records succession boxes

Hey user with the long name :-P - Indeed, I agree that linking them directly to the actual record subheading is a good idea, but the problem is that (call it lazyness) but the computers I edit Wikipedia with during the mid day of some weekdays (currently Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) are college computers, not my home computer.

The difference? Well, on my home PC I use FireFox which "remembers" what additions you've made to the article while still previewing your edits, so one could go to another article and correct a link if it was wrong via copying the article title and then pressing back and your old edits are still there? Following me? :-P. While if you go to another article while previewing your edits on my college computers and then go back the data is lost.

Oh and I already have suggested to the IT department to install FireFox but they declined my offer, even though getting FireFox is completely free! Anyway, I'll get onto your request this afternoon --Phill talk Edits 12:40, 10 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi DH, I changed only because I felt it was more accurate grammar (the old which/that rule). The cars listed are the ones "that" were used in 1985 - it uses a restrictive clause because all of those cars were in the '85 season. However, it's tricky because the McLaren MP4/2 was a car which was used in 1984, 1985 and 1986. In most cases for these templates, though, I feel like "that" is the correct grammar. What do you think on this? If we come to the conclusion of using "that", I would be more than willing to change them all manually (you don't need that work dumped on you), but I would need to know how far back the templates go chronologically. Hi Guroadrunner. How strongly do you feel about your recent change to template:F1 cars 1985 (i.e. changing "which" to "that")? Because all the other "F1 cars by year" templates say "which" (except, I've just noticed, template:F1 cars 2007, which is completely different!). If you're not especially passionate about the change, then I'd probably prefer to see it changed back, so that they're all consistent. Your note on my talkpage

Hi-thanks for your note-glad to be appreciated.Most of the race summary is paraphrased from the John Player Motorsport Year Book(for the 1975 races),Murray Walker's Grand Prix Review (from 1987 onwards) and the relevant year's Autosport. Some details are taken from the FiA World Championship Review Videos from 1981 on and there is some archive footage on YouTube,but I'm not sure quite how to cite those sources.

I know I'm not much good with disambigs,I can't seem to find the line character to divide them and I'm used to New Zealand punctuation which means I normally have someone racing round after me adding in spaces.

F1 results table

Hello [Copy and Paste] DH85868993 - Concerning your comments on my edits to Massa and Räikkönen. I do agree with you that the chassic name should be in full, but I don't like the other engine details because such details can be put in the car's article, I personally prefer the "[Engine] V8/V10/V12", because that's really just a brief. I guess another reason is because on my computer, or on FireFox at least, the table is three lines lines tall which doesn't exactly look good for the Grand Prix cells of the table. --Phill talk Edits Review this GA review! 12:31, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Davey Ray

I took several pictures of his car on Sunday night at midget car races near Madison, Wisconsin, USA. [4] His bio at the (U.S.) national USAC series [5] says that he was the Australian SpeedCar Champion (2006). Is that a large series? Is he notable? What type of cars? Usually only the top racers race in both the U.S. and Australia. I wasn't surprised to find an article on New Zeelander Michael Pickens after I saw him at a different track near Madison. Thanks for replying. It looks like he is an American who goes to Australia for the winter. The series doesn't look as notable as I expected. I'll skip writing an article on Ray for now. He could be considered notable for his USAC racing in the U.S. too. Someone could always upload the image later if things change. Sorry, they all work for me, and the F1 championships template looks normal again now. However, there was a short period a few months ago when the collapsible templates didn't collapse for me, so I suppose it's just a temporary problem.
