Sunspots

Hi Mike here - On the sunspots page, thanks for your edits. I do think you should be aware of a subtext. I certainly agree that all the stuff about Herschel's solar observations and descriptions was irrelevant (I left it there because I am not sure about the etiquette of deleting text by somebody else). It was pretty much accurate (if a bit confused) but it was irrelevant (except perhaps the bit about what we would now call the Wilson depression of sunspots) and it was rambling. However, the point about the wheat prices correlation is that it is widely used (still!) to imply that Herschel was the first victim of a 400-year silencing campaign about sunspots and climate: all that stuff about hostile reception at the Royal Society etc. I am actually an FRS and spent time in the library looking at the original documents and its a gross distortion. There was debate, but hostile it was not. I did a google search and found over 100 climate skeptic pages that quoted, verbatim, the text on this wikipedia sunspot page - which, as I say, was misleading and historically wrong. Therefore I wanted to counter it rather than just delete it. The wording I used was aimed at being fair to Herschel and to make it clear that Herschel himself was far from convinced by the connection. For me this is important detail. Hey. Thanks for letting me know about this. I agree that this is important to add as long as it can be supported by sources. Also, a general guideline on Wikipedia editing etiquette is given in Wikipedia:Etiquette. Regarding editing other users' edits, most users follow the "Wikipedia:Be bold" guideline. WikiProject Weather: Map Dot & Template/Infobox Colors

Dear project member, This message is being sent out to encourage new ideas and feedback on those proposed in regard to the colors debate for WikiProject Weather. For those who are unaware of what's been happening over the last year, I will give a brief summary. We have been discussing proposed changes to the colors of the dots on tropical cyclone maps and templates and infoboxes across the entire weather project in order to solve issues related to the limited contrast between colors for both normal vision as well as the various types of color blindness (MOS:ACCESS). We had partially implemented a proposal earlier this year, however, it was objected to by a number of people and additional issues were presented that made it evident this wasn't the optimal solution. We tried to come up with other solutions to address the issues related to color contrast, however, none of them gained traction and no consensus was generated.

We need your help and I encourage you to propose your own scale and give feedback on those already listed. Keep in mind that we are NOT making a decision on any individual proposal at this time. We are simply allowing people to make proposals and cultivate them given feedback from other project members. Please visit our project page for additional details. The proposal phase will close no later than December 31st at 23:59 UTC. NoahTalk 02:45, 21 November 2022 (UTC)

Wilcox observatory

Hi, do you think you could help me set up this page? I think that the telescope is note worthy enough for one and I ahve some pictures that I can upload tomorrow. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilcox_solar_observatory Synethos (talk) 04:16, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

@Synethos I would be happy to when I get a chance. CoronalMassAffection (talk) 19:35, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

That helps a lot already thanks! I'm not as good at 'wiki lingo', but I'll try to do better with next edit. :) Synethos (talk) 03:43, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

@Synethos:   No problem! I used to live very close to the telescope, and I was surprised it did not already have an article. I am very glad I was able to help with this. CoronalMassAffection (talk) 20:55, 21 January 2023 (UTC)
