One big problem edit

for new stubs is they can be orphans very easily - I have linked 2 items for you in the stub you have started, worth now going to the articles linked to see if there is any relevance in linking back... if you get my drift. Being a new user - no need to spill your life story at the scotland project - just find some people who can help you without fuss, btw - there are some people in Australia who, once you get to know them - they caqn be helpful as well. cheers sats 07:59, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you :) Calamity Hill (talk) 08:06, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

np - well worth looking at similar articles of tomes that are related to the book and the late 1600's to see their format and what they are using for refs... also, there is never shame about imitating similar srticles for ideas or ways of doing things... sats 08:14, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
well worth to check the boswell article (where the book is a red link...) and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Tour article... sats 08:20, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you - it's slowly becoming clear how it works! Thanks again! Calamity Hill (talk) 08:22, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have a soft warm fuzzy feeling at the moment to anyone who was born in edinburgh (Boswell that is), I was there for a week a few weeks ago... sats 08:27, 22 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

t's been 2 years since I was last there - but lived in Scotland for 45 years before parachuting into Australia. It's actually cold enough in Brisbane tonight to remind me of Edinburgh (In the summer lol). Calamity Hill (talk) 08:33, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

Your submission at Articles for creation edit

Thank you for your recent submission to Articles for Creation. Your article submission has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. Please view your submission to see the comments left by the reviewer. You are welcome to edit the submission to address the issues raised, and resubmit if you feel they have been resolved.

dinnae fas yrslf about that one - parts of this place is all about death by committee - criteria and policies that wouldn't stand the test of time.... Do you have a copy of aforesaid... The book? sats 02:25, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Please read the guidelines (particularly Wikipedia:Notability (books)) being used by me and every other reviewer before resubmitting. This subject may well meet guidelines but you've not made that clear.. You are going to need more than a reference to the book itself and a fan site to demonstrate notability here. Reviewers, myself included, do not need a copy of the book to review the article, it is your responsibility as submitter to provide sufficient evidence of notability, not reviewers to go search it out in the book itself or elsewhere.--RadioFan (talk) 02:55, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am sure there is a clear process and procedure where a new user is required to go through. I am not sure that I have contravened every part of the procedure, probably most. I am confident of the article created, as it is a mix of a number issues relevent to the 1760's. My apologies if I have created a glitch in the correct procedures. The motivation to move out of the book notability conversation will become evident in the article itself. sats 03:04, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Wow, agree with Sats. This is an important book which should meet Criteria#5. It would also be a great addition at Wikisource if that should take your fancy. See s:Author:James Boswell. If you are interested and need some help getting started, drop me a line. Moondyne (talk) 04:28, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

blind freddy edit

sheesh - every bugger got their toes cut off in the 1760's - the brits, france, genoa all got their damage from corsica and boswell had his fingers in the till. sheesh - the book was an important issue re the brits crisis even if it is not m entioned there. sats 04:36, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Once you decide to take the aticle through AfC then the reviewers are going to apply the criteria for asseing notability and I don't think you can blame them for that. Creating it as a stub outside AfC ensures you get the article up in mainspace but of course it still needs to be appropriately sourced. Best wishes Flat Out let's discuss it 05:03, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you to all. Appreciated. Calamity Hill (talk) 05:13, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

References edit

Hi, I have altered the bare urls in the article by using the "cite template" facility as I think it is the easiest way to include refs. I'm hoping that by looking at the way I've inserted them, it will be helpful for you? I was going to direct you to the very helpful editors at the Teahouse but I see you have found your way there! Good luck with your article - I'm sure it will be very interesting! SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:58, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't know if it will help, but this seems to be a review of the book and you could perhaps use it - for instance it states it was Boswell's first literary work so you could add that to the article? Also this states it was Jean-Jacques_Rousseau (if this is the right guy) who suggested Boswell should visit Corsica. There is also brief information included in Boswell's entry in the Encyclopedia Britannica; I'm not sure if you have access to it but it does state: "In February 1768 Boswell published An Account of Corsica, The Journal of a Tour to That Island; and Memoirs of Pascal Paoli and stepped into fame. France had unmasked its intention of annexing the island, and people were greedy for information about Corsica and Paoli. Motives of propaganda caused him to present himself in the book as completely naive and to cut the tour to a mere frame for the memoirs of Paoli, but the result is still pleasing." Hope some of that might help you expand the article? My apologies if you already have this information! SagaciousPhil - Chat 10:27, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I was just typing/saving the above when I received your message on my talk page - you are very welcome and if I can help at all, just let me know. I hope you enjoy editing Wikipedia! SagaciousPhil - Chat 10:29, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
small problem - Account of Corsica now exists - sagacious is on the right track ,but to have 2 arts at the same time is a small probloem... sats 10:32, 23 July 2013 (UTC) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/An_Account_of_Corsica:_The_Journal_of_a_Tour_to_that_Island is now redundant, someone needs to do the right burial process - and or adding anything from that to the article that is now out in the open, thanks... sats 10:35, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Whoops - sorry, I had just followed the article link from the Project Scotland page; I'll leave you guys to sort it all out but hopefully Calamity will find the above links useful as refs in the "new" version of the article! SagaciousPhil - Chat 10:49, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
please dont apologise - the more the merrier re eds in to talk and help - the missing article was sort of circumlocuted by the added linked articles in the open stub - the corsica crisis in english politics, the french invasion etc - it all clearly had been adied and abetted by boswells book and its existence - just that no one had liunked it prior to now - the trickier part is the adding WP:RS to validate some of the issues raised... sats 11:01, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Ah ok...no worries...how do I kill the original? (Apologies for sounding dense but I don't want to get it wrong and stuff it up) - I'm presuming I have to somehow kill it? Calamity Hill (talk) 12:01, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure but I think it might need an Admin to delete the old one and perhaps merge the history from it over to the new one? If you put simply type: {{Admin help}} on your talk page under here, I think an Admin will come along to decipher it? SagaciousPhil - Chat 12:45, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you - Calamity Hill (talk) 12:55, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've added another couple of independent refs to info you had already included; you may also be able (if you want to, of course) to get some further detail to add to the article from them - for instance, I see the Larsen book (page 16) does give figures for the number of copies sold and translations done. I promise I'll leave you to it now - Boswell just interests me a little bit as he ties in with the articles I created. SagaciousPhil - Chat 14:06, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, much appreciated - I'm in the process of reading the book again at present to fillet what's necessary from it. I added an important POV quote from Lyttelton which appears in the foreword but for the life of me I can't get the hang of the way to reference it - but it comes in the foreword, page 7 of the book itself. I will take the time to learn how to do all these things but felt guilty that so many kind people were 'pitching in' and therefore I felt the need to do something just now to let you all know I hadn't ceased work on it. Unfortunately I need to disappear for a little while as Liverpool are playing live on Aussie TV and it's a rarity to get British soccer clubs live here - back soon :) Calamity Hill (talk) 09:12, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Don't worry, I'll happily try to help with refs for you; they can be a bit daunting to start but you'll soon get the hang of them. As far as I can tell, it isn't essential for the 'Content' (or plot) section to have refs as that is just an explanation of what the book includes - if you could fill some of the detail there, it would be fab!
I don't want you to feel I'm pushing in but the article has now taken my interest. If we can sort it into a reasonable shape over the next couple of days, it might be possible to nominate it for DYK but it would need to be done by the 29th as there is a five day deadline from date of creation. Enjoy the football! SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:24, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

No not pushy at all - the more the merrier. As for DYK, I think that's great, fantastic, and as soon as I work out what DYK means I'll be back with more superlatives lol - seriously though I'm off to look up DYK to see what it means and what would need to be done...Thanks Again! Calamity Hill (talk) 09:29, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

A beer for you! edit

Thank you for creating the article about An Account of Corsica - if you check the article history, you'll see it now shows you as the original creator! Thanks also, of course to sats for help too  . I hope you don't mind that I have added some extra independent refs and changed the headings to follow the usual structure for books? SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:02, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

An Account of Corsica edit

Hi, I've played around with the article a little bit - please feel free to change any of it! If you could fill out the content section a bit more, it would be great. By the way, do you have a ref for the sentence I've marked as 'citation needed'?

Speaking of refs, are you trying to add them by using the 'edit' tab or the 'edit source' section? To be honest, I cannot get to grips with Visual Editor (which is where you're taken if you use the 'edit' tab), so you might want to try 'edit source' and that will also let you see the mark up already used for refs in the article.

Hope you enjoyed the football match!! SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:01, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think I found the missing ref, so have scored through that part of my note above. SagaciousPhil - Chat 20:06, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Apologies Phil - been inundated with work - only now (fri afternoon) can I settle down to this again. My problem with references was really one of fear. When I entered something I knew had to be referenced I normally click on the little ref's thing at the bottom to enter a reference - but because there were already seven references or so - and mine was about to come before them - I panicked thinking 'Maybe I'll knock all the other references out of sync'? If you see what I mean? Thanks for all your help BTW, it's really coming along! Calamity Hill (talk) 06:54, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

No problem! Don't worry about knocking out the refs - everything can always easily be fixed - the numbering/positioning of the refs in the ref list is done automatically; using the preview button is handy (when using 'edit source'). But really, don't worry, things are easily sorted (repeating myself again!!). I see Moondyne has also added about the declaration this morning - isn't it great to have everyone working together on this.
If we can get the 'content' section sorted a little bit more today, I'll do a DYK nom this evening (in about 10 hours, it's morning here). I'm not sure what to try for a 'hook' - maybe something fairly straightforward like DYK....the journal An Account of Corsica was so successful, James Boswell was widely known as Corsica Boswell?
If you have any questions, I'll try to help, so don't be afraid to ask   .... SagaciousPhil - Chat 08:25, 26 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge edit

Hi, at Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge we're striving to bring about 10,000 article improvements and creations for the UK and Ireland and inspire others to create more content. In order to achieve this we need diversity of content, in all parts of the UK and Ireland on all topics. Eventually a regional contest will be held for all parts of the British Isles, like they were for Wales and the Wedt Country. We currently have just over 1900 articles and need contributors! If you think you'd be interested in collaborating on this and helping reach the target quicker, please sign up and begin listing your entries there as soon as possible! Thanks.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:40, 28 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Europe 10,000 Challenge invite edit

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. If you would like to see masses of articles being improved for Europe and your specialist country like Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon, sign up today and once the challenge starts a contest can be organized. This is a way we can target every country of Europe, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant and also sign under any country sub challenge on the page that you might contribute to! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:44, 6 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing. Your participation in the contest and contributing articles on British women from your area or wherever would we much appreciated. Thanks.
