Rugby Union

Thanks for the words of support. Once you get your head around the notability issue, you can get some good work done. Some nice work from your good self too, especially on the Lions. I hope you approve of some of the layouts I placed over your original work, I basically mimiced other rugby sites to try and create uniformity. If there's any rugby field you would like me to look into please drop me a note, I've almost finished the 1905 Welsh team verses the All Blacks and wondering where to go next. Title of Lions tours

I've had the identical thought you are having. I've created the page 1980 New Zealand rugby union tour of Wales, a tour of just 7 games with two in North America. On one hand it feels I'm ignoring the American teams, on the other hand it makes for a stupidly long page title if I include them. I'm presently sticking with the main country toured, ie the most matches played, but I'm sure if we offend people they will challenge it.

Dual-code internationals

1927-28 Waratahs tour

Thx. Trust no-one in the RU project minds that I've incorporated that match result format we use in WP:RL (most consistently we use it in our SoO series articles like here). Maybe it's going over the top but I'm contemplating doing full team line-ups for the 5 Tests of the Tour. That 1980 Lions article is impressive. I was actually contemplating a side by side vertical line-up such as here NRL season 1999 or when used for a series it looks like SoO 2006. But actually I've always liked that horizontal format as per SA 1906 & it's very neat and discrete when the small font is used. So I might go that way. -Sticks66 02:28, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

• I would’nt worry too much about editing Ireland rugby articles when it comes to politics. I’ve yet to come across anything overly political. However if you what to see some conflicts, try editing articles on Irish soccer ! That can be a real minefield. Several Irish rugby clubs were formed by ex-college students because it was these colleges that developed the game. When students graduated there were not many clubs to join so they had to form their own. In Ireland university teams, in all sports, often play at quite a senior level and in national leagues rather then separate university leagues. The most notable example is University College Dublin A.F.C. who play in the top level of the national soccer league and have even represented Ireland in European competition. Even UCC RFC or more then just an average student team. They play in the national league and while playing for UCC, players have been capped, not only by Ireland but also by the Lions. • There is a bit of confusion when it comes to clubs/colleges in the All Ireland league. Some college teams are exclusively for students whereas others are open to all and others have conditions. For example Trinity College Dublin only lets current students play (it may let graduates play also). UCC traditionally only let current students play but to my knowledge it is now an 'open' club...i.e. any college graduate may play. This was done in order to maintain their competitiveness in the AIL (poor school exam results meant less and less students were actually going to college – therefore less were playing on the rugby teams). The University of Limerick is completely open and lets anyone play. Again, this was done to increase their competitiveness by amalgamating the college team with the nearby 'Bohemians' rugby team to form 'U.L Bohemians'. On the whole, they are all 'clubs' that compete in the All Ireland league but each has different and varying connections to their original status as 'pure' college (or intervarsity) teams.

• I think that would be correct. To my knowledge a 'Mick English' did play for the British and Irish Lions on that tour whilst being a Bohemians RFC player. I'm not 100% sure when the amalgamation took place between The University of Limerick and Bohemians RFC but it was close to the 1990's so I would think it correct to maintain the link to 'Bohemians RFC' as opposed to 'U.L Bohemians RFC'.

Reggie Gibbs

Yeah, hell of a player. It's incredible how much the past is forgotten, it appears to be natural in all sports though. In rugby everyone in Wales talks about Williams, Edwards, Morgan and John but forget about the people that did the same in the past. And lets face it, with modern competition and travel, players these days probably pick up three caps for every one that was once collected in the early 1900s. I'm sure you've seen it in horse racing; the fact that people fly, so one day in Ireland the next in Arabia, sod the guys that road the Derby with a broken leg in 1913. Sorry... off on one there. British Lions

The name 'Lions' was first used by journalists to describe the British team in 1924, taken from a motif from the players' ties. That could explain the fact that Lions stuff was bouncing around before 1950. In 1949 the four Home Nations agreed to tour as an official combine. I now have a copy of Griffiths' book, and I see where you are coming from. What I would like to see is a programme or other such like fron the 1930s. Maybe I'll check rugbyrelics. Totesport Bowl

I didn't know about the Whitbread Gold Label Cup! My info comes from both the 1990/91 Ladbrokes Companion ("Martell Cup Chase - First run in 1984"), and the Aintree Grand National Media Guide:

"The totesport Bowl, previously the Betfair Bowl and the Martell Cup, was first run in 1984. It was designed as a consolation prize for horses who were unable to run or were beaten in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham, and looked like providing just that at the very first attempt.

Drumlargan, who had been third to Burrough Hill Lad at Cheltenham, started at odds-on and came to the final fence in front. He then made a horrendous mistake which resulted in Frank Codd losing his irons and enabled Tom Taaffe to seize the initiative on Royal Bond. The Arthur Moore-trained 11-year-old became the first of the three winners trained in Ireland up to now."

Dambusters/nigger

I've had an interest in the "rest" for a number of years, probably partly because I toured in Holland many years ago, and also because obscure stuff can be fun sometimes. To be honest, I didn't know too much about many Tier 3 nations (bar Spain, and Georgia), and the rest was even hazier (except Hong Kong and Dubai, perhaps, because of the sevens tournament)

I also reckon if rugby is going to be taken seriously internationally it's going have to have a wider spread. I think we may well see sevens in the Olympics soon.--MacRusgail (talk) 19:38, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

Cardiff Arms Park

This is a bit of an interesting one, but to cut to the point, the National Stadium was the used name before 1984. The book being referenced throughout, The Story of the Development of the National Rugby Ground appears to be an officially sanctioned WRU booklet, but I do not believe the 'official' opening tag. In Fields of Praise, David Smith writes "The celebration game between the President's XV and an Invitation XV, assembled by Sir William Ramsay of the R.F.U., that marked the official opening of the Ground in 1970, ..." The fact that anyone could build a nice new spanking Ground, be Secretary of the WRU, and then not officially open the ground until 14 years later when the last terrace goes up seems inconceivable. You would want to take the credit on your watch. I think there is a difference between officially opening and officially completing the site. The Guinness book of Rugby facts (1981), which lists all the International Rugby teams in the World at that point, lists Wales’ main stadium as “National Stadium, Cardiff”. I think we can safely call the National Stadium as of its use in 1970, though the Arms Park had been operating as the Welsh National Stadium as of 1955.

If I had more modern books I may be able to pin it down more accurately, but I get nauseous if I pick up a rugby book past 1984. ;) FruitMonkey (talk) 09:11, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

John Dyke

I'm fairly sure on this one. The Who's Who of Welsh rugby has him down on all the teams I've listed but not Cardiff. Penarth RFC have him down as one of theirs and he captained the team fron 1905-07. Cambridge University

There is a need to look at all the players, I just wanted to start a more defined list. The problem is, that between the two Universities they have clocked up something like 500-600 notable players, the majority internationals. I'm not really sure where to start, as if we have a third category stating 'Other notable players' we are back to square one. Maybe if I add a section to the article itself discussing other notable players, it then requires other people to add to the section rather than keep adding to a list? Any thoughts? I'll do my best to sort it out. ...but on another point, I know the worlds of horse racing and rugby union rarely meet, but I've discovered an early Irish player who bred a 100-1 Grand National winner in 1928. I thought it would be an easy link, but the horse's page didn't exist. 1973 International Seven-A-Side Tournament

Thanks for your comments about the article and thank you also for raising the inconsistencies. These stem from a lack of proof reading in the final stages. I have looked into each and rewritten accordingly-

The article mentions three unrelated Browns from the Gala club taking part, but I can only see two listed in Scotland's squad, is there another one who needs listing?

It seems that Ken Oliver, also of Gala, was named in the program (my primary source for squads) but did not play. Arthur Brown was the player on the day.

(In addition I have added a note on primary source being the program)

And the article also describes the tournament starting with a shock in England's win over Wales, when the match listing shows this as the final pool games.

Again, the programme lists the England Wales match as the final pool game, but it may be that on the day this was played first. However, I am not sure which is correct and so have reworded to the effect that it was a shock result, but I have said it happened in the group stage. Time not specified.

Sorry... I only know it for its current cricket usage. The "Boet Erasmus" ground was the traditional home of Eastern Cape Rugby, at least in the last few decades. I never saw Dancing Brave in the flesh. My local course is Haydock Park so I got to see lots of great sprinters like Habibti, Soba, Committed etc The best race I ever witnessed was the 1990 Sprint Cup: Dayjur vs Royal Academy. I also got to see great chasers like Silver Buck and Burrough Hill Lad. There is a Holme Tower hospice in Penarth, but I don't think there is a Holme Tower in Cardiff.
