Milroy Bio

Hi Hal. I'm currently building a page on the 9th Indiana Infantry and was grateful to find your biography of Robert H. Milroy. Your insights on Milroy's lowest moments were good, and I liked the source listing, particularly the Jasper Co. Library Milroy document collection.

I did note one discrepancy in the biography, based on Milroy's appointment letter in that collection from Governor Morton dated April 15, 1861. If Wikipedia is right that firing on Sumter began on April 12, 1861, then Milroy's appointment was three days afterwards. The most recent edit of the Robert H. Milroy bio said two weeks, and wasn't explicit about the first date the firing began. Fort Sumter says there was firing for 34 straight hours, so it apparently continued for more than a day.

I'd appreciate any corrections to my pages in future, and am gaining an appreciation for the difficulties of encyclopedia entry writing. I am finding that my book sources (Roy Morris' bio of Ambrose Bierce, for example) make questionable assertions. Morris asserted that the 9th IVI killed General Robert S. Garnett at, and I have at least one source that indicates it was the 7th.

Hi. I have to say that I'm a bit flummoxed by this because I have not done any editing on that biography since last summer and somehow I missed the large-scale modifications that others have made in the meantime. Normally I keep a pretty close watch over articles in which I list myself as a maintainer. I'm going to take my name off the maintenance list because the article no longer represents work that I can verify. If you are familiar with the References listed, you will know that they are relatively skimpy and people have included a lot of detail that cannot be found in those references. (This is too bad for me from a personal standpoint because one of my ancestors was in the 18th Connecticut, captured at Second Winchester.)

You are correct about his appointment as Colonel, which occurred on April 27. My original text said "two weeks" after Fort Sumter.

Letter to the Editor of the San Jose Mercury News

I sent this letter to the editor to the San Jose Mercury News today regarding an article on the Briones House in Palo Alto [1].

Dear Editor,

S.L. Wykes had clearly done the research to note that the Wikipedia entry mentioning the Briones House was incorrect. So why didn't Wykes correct the Wikipedia entry? This morning I did so myself, citing Wykes' article.

The Mercury News sees fit to pass judgment on everything from stem cells, to Paris Hilton, to Caltrans to Wikipedia. So, as an ethical standards bearer, why doesn't the Merc feel an obligation to correct Wikipedia's errors on topics its journalists have researched? It's clear that Wykes, a veteran journalist, may be using Wikipedia as a source, at least one to check behind. If so, in cases like this one, Wykes had an obligation to correct these kinds of errors.

More and more, Wikipedia, by far the largest encyclopedia anyone can edit, is the world's encyclopedia because of its comprehensiveness and the diligence of tens of thousands of active Wikipedians who add to and maintain it. At this point, with close to 2 million entries, it's a public resource akin to a national park.It's likely also one that tens of thousands of journalists use. Wykes and the Mercury News generally are doing the research equivalent of littering by not correcting errors in entries that are central to their research. It's time journalists and print media stopped turning their noses up at it, especially considering they're using it as a resource.

Notability of MK Capital

A tag has been placed on MK Capital requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. "Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias.
