@Vif12vf: @Pppery: Furthermore, RHaworth has now deleted the Region infobox, so some version of the changes was necessary, and using subst at least avoids manual editing errors that could easily be overlooked.. Unfortunately Tuscany (at least) was overlooked, so it has a redlink to the template and we can no longer use subst; it'll have to be fixed by hand, or the Region infobox undeleted. Let's hope Category:Regions of Italy is correct or someone knows the full list of regions so they can all be checked. David Brooks (talk) 15:33, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

I'd further add that the discussion at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2019_February_6#Infobox_settlement_wrappers asserts that "Subst:itution will reduce the maintenance overhead, reduce the cognitive burden for editors, and enable articles to benefit more immediately from improvements to the current parent template." Pppery's comment above contradicts the first two claims, and I don't follow the logic of the third. And I've just given Tuscany a temporary shunt. David Brooks (talk) 22:12, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

I did not contradict the claims stated there, as my templates substed and deleted as a result of a TfD will have someone go through and add the proper markup to subst out the if statements before the template is substed (usually by bot). The fact that the IP unilaterally substituted out a template that doesn't subst cleanly does not change the general value of substing infobox wrappers. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 22:16, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

I agree with your last point about the general value; perhaps this anon didn't realize that the instructions meant to take substitution to two levels. Naively, it does seem to suggest a one-time subst. But this is all beside the point; things need to be fixed and I only have elementary template coding skills. RHowarth pointed out that the reason Tuscany was skipped was probably the capital R in Region, by the way. And Chiorbone da Frittole has now re-coded it. @Vif12vf:@Pppery: I've had a go at Puglia, which looks the same visually as before; please check I did it right. I also removed the redundant local Short Description (although I think opinions differ on whether to do that though). Did I do it right? One thing I don't remember about template programming is whether it's OK to remove blank parameters; does Template:Infobox settlement make any distionctions between blank and missing params? BTW, I take it we can trust both Regions of Italy and Category:Regions of Italy are complete :-) David Brooks (talk) 17:12, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Everything seems right! As for blank parameters, some people leave them in but they are ultimately unnecessary and may make things harder for people who does not edit the old way. Vif12vf/Tiberius (talk) 17:16, 18 February 2019 (UTC)
