Surface rail is a type of rail transit that transports passengers. In contrast with rapid transit, surface rail is generally not grade-separated, and, in contrast with commuter rail, the tracks are generally not shared with or evolved from freight railways. Terms generally used for these systems, and which also apply to the cars that operate on them, include tram, streetcar, and light rail.
