Should this be formatted as a navbox? It seems like it would be more concise, more consistent with other WP article. It also seems like it clarify some misunderstandings. The way this appears in articles, it seems to be part of the article and not a separate template. I suspect this is why Donrelladded some Georgia-specific links, which Aboutmovies 3.5 weeks later reverted saying "rm links to Georgia newspapers since this is Oregon". Neither editor seemed to recognize that these are generic, non-state-specific sections. The only thing state-specific is the addition of state-specific categories. Some of this misunderstanding I will eliminate by changing the section headings to lines prefixed with ";". But I still think a navbox would be better. YBG (talk) 23:06, 31 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
@YBG: Agreed, something needs to be done here. The link to List of African-American newspapers in the United States, for instance, (a) does not link to the actual list, and (b) really ought to have code that links it to the state-specific list (which exists in all, or nearly all, cases). I'm sure many of the other links have similar issues. This needs to either be customizable, or intelligently customize itself. Or maybe it should be "substed" only, so that it can be customized after inclusion. Thoughts on how to proceed? -Pete Forsyth (talk) 19:21, 18 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Peteforsyth: Thanks for the ping! This page had dropped off my watchlist long ago. I had in mind something like this:
But I see this is very simplistic because this is transcluded in the ==See Also== section, and if it is a navbox, it needs to be moved to the bottom. But that's where {{Newspapers in the United States}} is found, and there is a lot of overlap. So maybe this should be merged into that template and then this one deleted. But then we'd need to make sure the category logic in this template is included in that template and in each of its invocations.
Re African American newspapers, I've chaneed the link to point the list. I'm not sure about linking to just the state list unless that can be done for multiple categories.
