WHATS UP MR JONES - sources and argument regarding David Bowie.

edit

First I will tackle the argument around "WHATS UP MR JONES" which is stated to be an attack on David Bowie, I hope this will suffice.

Sources and numerical references

edit

1 ) Confirmation of Bowie's real name :- [1]

David Bowie songs/albums in question (titles) :

2) Starman :- [2]
3) The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars :- [3]
4) Ziggy Stardust 5) Glass Spiders :-
6) The Man Who Sold The World :-
7) Space Oddity :-

Here are the lyrics for WHATS UP MR JONES broken down; the parts in question are numerically highlighted (conforming to an above reference). Other links are added to give citation to each argument. All lyrics will be in capitals, numerical references in bold and any extra information in normal print.

Section #1

edit

1JONES IS SO ALONE ONE MILLION MILES FROM HOME SOLD YOUR DIAMONDS AND DOGS FOR SOME STONES YOU WATCHED YOUR 2 3 4 STARMAN DROWN AND LET YOUR 3 5 SPIDERS DOWN LEFT YOUR 2 3 4 STARMAN TO DIE ON HIS OWN.

This part of the song highlights Bowie's failure to keep up the standard of musical work which he gained fame for in the 80's. To quote from the David Bowie article:

"Since the mid-80s only a handful of Bowie’s recordings have entered public consciousness."

The verse also seems to reflect on the way that Bowie effectively ditched the "Ziggy Stardust" (starman) on stage alter ego, it could be said that this influenced hide, but no definate link can be drawn from this. To quote from the David Bowie wiki article:

"The relatively short-lived Ziggy persona epitomised a career often marked by musical innovation, reinvention and striking visual presentation."

Section #2

edit

CAUSE YOU 6SOLD US A LIE. BUT YOUR STARMAN IS GONE. 2 3 4 7HE'S A STAR IN THE SKY (lyrical reference)

WELL 7 THIS IS GROUND CONTROL (lyrical reference) AND WE HAVE GOT YOUR SOUL 6 MEET THE MAN WHO SOLD OUT TO THE WORLD YOU LET YOUR 2 3 4 STARMAN DOWN. MR.KARMA CLOWN YOU'RE NO HERO OR MAINMAN TO ME (Definate hard feelings towards Bowie, is this a fans outrage at the lack of production by his hero? Or perhaps Bowie was a seriously bad figure in hide's eyes and any influencial effect Bowie had on hide during the JA ZOO period was merely satirical?)

In this section we see that this is a definate attack on Bowie and we see yet even more song references, aswell as the use of Bowie's lyrics agains him. Most notable "MEET THE MAN WHO SOLD OUT TO THE WORLD", changing "Sold the" to "Sold out to the", possibly representing the way that Bowie has seemingly done many things to change his genre and style in order to get back into the limelight, or perhaps even an attack on his doings whilst in the limelight.

Sections #3, #4 and #5 (ommitted from analysis)

edit

The next 3 sections are ommited from analysis as they bring up nothing which hasn't, or will not already be commented on by the end of my input, however I have left them in the article for your viewing.

YOU SOLD US A LIE WHILE WE CRIED IN PAIN NOW YOU'RE SO ALONE LIKE A FLY IN THE RAIN SO TIRED OUT. WHAT'S UP MR.JONES? SO TRY IT OUT. WHAT'S UP MR.JONES? SO TRY IT NOW. WHAT'S UP MR.JONES? WHAT'S UP MR.JONES?

SO ALONE ONE MILLION MILES FROM HOME LIKE A MAGGOTT YOU FEED OFF YOURSELF SO ALONE BROKE YOUR SPIDER'S BONES LEFT YOUR STARMAN TO DIE BY HIMSELF

YOU SOLD US A LIE WHILE WE CRIED IN VAIN NOW YOU'RE SO ALONE LIKE A FLY IN THE RAIN YOU SOLD US A LIE WHILE WE CRIED IN VAIN NOW YOU'RE SO ALONE LIKE A FLY IN THE RAIN

Section #6

edit

SO TIRED OUT PAID THE MASTER FOR THE LAST TIME.FOR THE LAST TIME WATCHED YOUR 2 3 4 STARMAN DROWN LAY THE MASK DOWN FOR THE LAST TIME. FOR THE LAST TIME TRY IT NOW (returning to the giving up of the Ziggy Stardust persona) PAID THE MASTER. LAID THE MASK DOWN. FOR LAST TIME LET YOUR 3 5 SPIDERS DOWN. PAID THE MASTER. OH.WHAT'S UP MR.JONES?. FOR THE LAST TIME TIRED OUT FOR THE LAST TIME What's up mr.jones? Mr.Jones.

In this section we see hide commenting at how Bowie gave up the persona of Ziggy Stardust "lay the mask down", or perhaps even commenting upon Bowie's real life, essentially saying that he has lived behind a mask for his career and now must show the world his real face - presumably a not pleasant one, from what hide is inferring.

Christian Rock Band Also Named "Zilch"

edit

There was a christian rock group named Zilch that was signed to Goatee Records and was curious how one would go about making a new page for that group. Just maybe putting (Christian band) after the group's name for the new page? Maybe this should go somewhere else. 71.237.14.139 (talk) 05:04, 11 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
