Yihyeon(Korean: 이현 ;born October 8, 1970) is a South Korean children's author and novelist. She along with works of animal fantasy, but also young adult fiction, historical fiction, and science fiction, attempting a new genre every time. She made her debut as a writer in 2006 with the short story collection Your Noodles Will Get All Mushy! Her major works include the children's books Planet of Robots, Play Ball, and Wanini the Green Lioness, a young adult novel, 1945, Cheolwon, and a picture book, I'm Opportunity, a Mars Exploration Rover. In 2022, Wanini the Green Lioness was selected for the IBBY Honour List[1], and 1945, Cheolwon was named as one of the twenty outstanding titles by the jury of the 2022 Hans Christian Andersen Awards.[2]
Life
editYihyeon was born on October 8, 1970, in Busan, South Korea. She particularly enjoyed reading and writing during her middle and high school years. She received her bachelor's degree in Korean language and literature from Sookmyung Women's University. After graduation, she undertook varied occupations including working at an advertising company, writing for an educational TV network, teaching at a cram school, opening a bookstore, and serving as a full-time activist at a migrant worker counseling center. While working at these various jobs, she continued to feel a desire to write and finally began to write fiction. In 2004, she won the 13th Chun Taeil Literary Award in the fiction category for her short story "Trains, Forever Sounding Their Horns and Always Racing Towards the Light." Yi became interested in stories for children through a children's book editor she met by chance, and made her debut as an author of children’s books with the collection of short stories, The Noodles Will Become Mushy!
Career
editIn 2006, Yihyeon received the grand prize at the 10th Changbi Good Children’s Book Awards for her collection of short stories Your Noodles Will Get All Mushy! Since committing to a career as a children’s book author, she has written over fifty fiction and non-fiction titles. In 2012, she won the Second Changwon Children’s Literature Award for Planet of Robots. In 2022, Wanini the Green Lioness[3] was selected for the IBBY Honour List in the Writing category[1], and 1945, Cheolwon was named as one of twenty outstanding titles by the jury of the 2022 Hans Christian Andersen Awards[2]. Your Noodles Will Get All Mushy!, 1945, Cheolwon, and Seoul in the Summer of That Year have been translated into Japanese. Our Scandal has been translated into Chinese and French. Yi has also taught courses on children's literature at the Graduate School of Children's Literature and Education at Chuncheon National University of Education.
Style
editYihyeon does not confine herself to a particular genre or subject and continues to challenge herself to experiment with different genres and subject matter including folk tales, history, sports, and science. In particular, the publication of her three-part science fiction series Planet of Robots was praised by the public as “Korea’s first real SF children’s storybook.” In 2012, Yi released 1945, Cheolwon[2], which captures the history of the period of Korea’s independence from Japanese rule through the eyes of young people. In 2013, Yi published Seoul in the Summer of That Year, a novel set during the Korean War. This book demonstrated how the rather heavy subject of history can be addressed in young adult fiction. From the beginning of her career in 2006, Yi has been writing about themes embodying resistance to violence. In Our Scandal, she explored how physical and verbal violence can take place in and out of the classroom along with many forms of resistance to such violence. In Hooray for Jang-soo!, she warned of the dangers of violence that may go unnoticed in the lives of young children and adolescents. Since the 2010s, her works have been characterized by a shift toward empowered female protagonists leading the narrative. Yi consciously chose a female protagonist while criticizing the male-biased narratives of Korean children's and young adult literature. In many of her works, such as I’m on My Way to the Silk Road, The Secret of Yeondong-dong, and Wanini the Green Lioness, the adventures are led by female protagonists.[4] The sci-fi feature "Robot Star" also features girl-type robots as the main characters. The sci-fi novel series Planet of Robots also features female robots as protagonists.
