The result of the move request was: moved to Wu Yinghua. (The initial proposal, a move to "Tu Yinghua", was clarified in the discussion to have been a typo.) It was demonstrated that the proposed title, which omits the hyphen, is preferred per WP:NCZH unless it is clearly not the WP:COMMONNAME. The discussion showed that the hyphenated spelling was most common in general Google search results, whereas the non-hyphenated spelling predominated in Google Books sources. This suggests there is not an obvious WP:COMMONNAME, thus leading to a consensus for the WP:NCZH-compliant title in the proposal. Wu Ying-hua → Tu Yinghua – The pinyin spelling (Wu Yinghua) seems to have eclipsed the Wade-Giles spelling (Wu Ying-hua) in most recent literature. ([1], [2], [3]) Several of the major exceptions don't use Wade-Giles, but rather an unorthodox form of pinyin ([4], [5]) which I have never seen elsewhere. Proposed move in line with WP:NCZH. - Well, separating the syllables allows Google to match each syllable separately, giving some false positives (e.g. "Hua He Wu Ying Zi"), although I'm not sure if that explains all those 18 million extra results. Bbbbbbbbba (talk) 02:10, 2 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
- On the other hand, I must say that I don't think separating the syllables with spaces (i.e. "Wu Ying Hua") is by any means "unorthodox": The Pinyin article says "Many writers are not yet aware of the rules for dividing text into words by spaces...", but personally I think dividing things into "words" instead of syllables/characters is simply not a natural process for Chinese speakers. - Regardless of whether spacing and/or hyphens are occasionally used, the convention for pinyin use on Wikipedia is not to do so. From the policy: "Pinyin is spaced according to words, not characters; the correct form of the title is Zizhi Tongjian, not "Zi Zhi Tong Jian" or "ZiZhi TongJian"." In regards to comparing the prevalence of one spelling of a name over another, it's best not to use a Google web search. They can be pretty unreliable (lots of websites mirror what is already in use on Wikipedia, for example). It's much better to look at published sources. Comparing the Google Books results for Wu Ying-hua and Wu Yinghua and taking a look at the names actually used in the results shows pretty strongly that "Wu Yinghua" is the most popular spelling.
