I checked Burke's peerage, which gives William's death as 1715, clearly a mistake. However, it maybe that William Clevland his son, born in 1712 and d. young died in 1715. Bearing in mind that Burke already has a mistake here, it casts doubt on the reliability of the suggestion that the other William died young. What then are we to make of John Clevland's comment on his memorial in 1734 "only surviving son"? There seems to be some evidence from the eigteenth century in the "freedom papers" of "Elizabeth Cleveland Hardcastle" mentioned here. E Louise further cites a letter from Sir George Young dated 29 November 1790 saying he met a "Cleaveland" in Sierra Leone cousin of John Clevland (1734-1817), MP for Barnstaple.
