Academic? edit

Is Wikimania an academic conference? Citation would be useful. Are Wikimania papers published in academic journals?--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 20:46, 16 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Answered here. Thanks!--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 00:34, 5 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikimania 2007 edit

Germany and the US were logical countries for the first two Wikimanias. But where is the next one to be held? Spain and Japan seem good options. And should I keep certain dates free? Is this already being discussed anywhere? DirkvdM 12:42, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Don't forget other English speaking countries.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 15:44, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
This should be discussed on meta since it isn't relevant to the article. Angela. 10:43, 22 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

When will the 2007 Wikimania take place? Will it also be from the 4th to the 6th of August? | AndonicO Talk | Sign Here 01:34, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Oh, the wikinews link says August 3-5. | AndonicO Talk | Sign Here 23:43, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Notability? edit

So what? At the risk of appearing inflammatory, a conference was held, notable people and sponsors came, the NYT maybe wrote something, and this article says that this was all significant because....?? Canuckle 18:27, 20 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sounds a bit "ad"ish edit

This article sounds a bit adish as if it were made to advertise Wikimania rather than give encyclopedic information about the confrence. Marlith T/C 02:19, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. And I know any edits will be reverted, as it's a lost cause dealing with a pet project of junior woodchucks. James1906 (talk) 21:22, 8 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

2008 dates edit

could someone please add in the dates of the alexandria conference - they have been set now (and I can't for the life of me find them). They are not listed on the 2008 homepage (oddly enough). Cheers, Witty Lama 03:23, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Lead nonsense edit

This, the last sentence of the lead, is nonsense: "Researchers and speakers presented studies and experiments on Wikipedia and other projects operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, on wiki culture and technology." It is not at all clear what "on wiki culture and technology" is doing there. Is it the last two of three subjects of the "studies and experiments"? And what are "experiments on Wikipedia"? I would have fixed it when I added the mandatory commas, but I don't know what it's supposed to be saying. --Milkbreath (talk) 15:42, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

It used to say "and on the world of free knowledge" after that. I'll try to reword. –Pomte 18:41, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

One Laptop per Adult? edit

Isn't it supposed to "One Laptop per child (?) as mentioned later in the text? Alson since there's no One Laptop per Adult entry in wikipedia. Wikimania 2011 conference edit

You are quite right. I am going to restore it for a few minutes to copy the plain text to post it elsewhere and will then revert it once more . Any ideas for an appropriate place ?--— Tumadoireacht Talk/Stalk 11:28, 15 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am a chump ! --by telegraphing it out of politeness I have made it impossible ! Oh well. I guess I will just have to copy and paste the diff page and then tidy up that--— Tumadoireacht Talk/Stalk 11:35, 15 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Per Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_censored it does seem that WP:RS information about the boycotts being organized vs. Wikimania 2011 would be relevant, as well as any WP:RS stories about editors who are detained, arrested or kicked out of Israel upon arrival. Just an FYI on this AlternateNews article and this early and this more recent boycott by the largest worldwide boycott Israel group. So a heads up for future developments. CarolMooreDC (talk) 19:57, 26 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Actually since writing the above I noticed the boycott of Egypt Wikimania is mentioned in this article, this Monsters & Critics mention is WP:RS, and Jimmy Wales mentioned the boycott in a Haaretz interview, allowing at least other refs to be included. So I guess putting in a sentence or two should not be that controversial. At my leisure. CarolMooreDC (talk) 01:47, 13 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Numbers edit

Do we know how many people attended each conference? 2007 section gives the number 440, but the previous ones have no number. Geographical distribution of the visitors would be nice, too.-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk  18:08, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I see 2006 numbers were added; what about 2005? And is anybody going to try to get info on 2008? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 23:43, 14 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

edit

Does Wikimania 2008 have an official logo? I see the Toronto and Atlanta bids are using the same logo. Greenman 13:18, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Technically, we're not using "the same logo," as we altered the colors to reflect the event being held in America. But what I understand is that it's more de facto than de jure. Mike H. I did "That's hot" first! 07:24, 1 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Primary language edit

Does Wikimania have an official primary language? If not, what is used in practice? The language of the host country or English? It's probably a mix, but when Wikimania was in Alexandria, approximately how many of the talks were in English? ike9898 (talk) 17:48, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

programs edit

There is hardly any content about the conferences' programs, or indeed what was being said there. Would the involved people expand? trespassers william (talk) 16:51, 23 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Number of Attendees for Wikimania 2012 edit

Hello Dear Wikimaniacs out there!

One Question about the Wikimania 2012 event:

  • How many attendees were participating there ?

English Wikipedia is not really sure about the number:

  • Saying "1,400 attendees" in the upper Table
  • Later followed by "There were over 1000 attendees from 87 countries..."
inside this paragraph
  • And at third:
"Wikimania 2012 has now concluded. Following a week of pure exhilaration
that drew to a close on the afternoon of July 15, the 1,400 attendees
from 87 countries turned off their laptop ..."
(found on the WM-Blog page)

Anyone online being one of the attendees and really knowing the real number?
Jaybear (talk) 09:54, 21 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

I replaced ref and returned to correct formatting per Wikipedia:Quote#Formatting. FYI, single sentences only have blockquotes in extraordinary circumstances which this was not. CarolMooreDC 19:21, 21 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why the raft of decorative flags? edit

The flag-waving doesn't help readability one bit. They don't help recognition of the country (spelling out the country-names, as now, does that). They take up more room, especially in the tables. Tony (talk) 12:53, 12 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I somewhat agree, but I don't think it particularly hurts readability though. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 23:06, 9 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Jimmy Wales Speaks at Closing Ceremony of Wikimania 2014

I was able to contact the YouTube user of this file File:Jimmy Wales Speaks at Closing Ceremony of Wikimania 2014.webm and successfully got him to modify his license to a suitable free-use license so we can now have that file on Wikimedia Commons. :)

Might be a useful addition to this article.

Purpose etc. edit

I came here looking for information on what purpose Wikimania is intended to serve, and found very little. Also missing are statistics on the demography of attendants, presenters etc. • • • Peter (Southwood) (talk): 09:25, 12 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
