Merge?

This article seems to duplicate the article Utility player (baseball), I don't know much about this whole business yet, who decides what should be done to combine the articles?

Utility player (baseball) has quite good inter-article linkage.. if that counts towards anything

William Perry

William Perry could not really play fullback. He was brought in by Mike Ditka to run a couple of times in short-yardage situations, but it was really a gimmick. The position of fullback requires more than the one ability of being able to take a handoff and run into the line to gain 2 yards. (He could not block, receive a pass, or even play in more than the one formation.) For that matter, Walter Payton took snaps under center--does that make him a quarterback? (He was effectively the team's last-string quarterback, punter, and kicker, because of his superior athletic gifts and knowledge of the game.) Perry actually did have one pass reception for a touchdown, but I'd agree that his offense was pretty much one-dimensional. [Larry Brown (tight end)] a tight end-turned-tackle would still catch a pass now and again, would be a better choice for this distinction. WHPratt (talk) 20:05, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Pete Rose

Pete Rose was NOT a utility player and was NOT the ultimate utility player as the article says. A utility player is not a starter, yet gets abundant playing time do to his ability to play many positions. Rose has always been a starter at one position. Granted, the position changed several times over the course of his career. Call a utility player what it is. If I hadda pick an ultimate utility player... Joe McEwing? Chone Figgins? Ryan Freel? I agree that Rose doesn't qualify. You might as well call Cal Ripken or Alex Rodriguez a utility player because each logged so much time at short and third. WHPratt (talk) 03:38, 19 August 2012 (UTC)

Part of the problem in finding examples is that most major league players get to start at a regular position for a time, but some eventually drift into substitute/backup roles. Some that come to my mind are: Billy Goodman, Jim Gilliam, Gil McDougald and Dick Williams. WHPratt (talk) 19:27, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

NFL utility players

I think the NFL section should be reorganized into two parts: there are players who do occasional duty at other positions (e.g., I don't think anyone would call Doug Flutie a "utility player" simply because he made one drop kick), and then there are "true" utility players who spend significant amounts of time playing on both sides of the ball (e.g., Troy Brown in 2004, Spencer Larsen in 2008). American Football outside North America

the utility players are rather common in non-professional teams of American Football in Europe. Especially the Americans playing in Europe very often go both ways. For example Trevar Deed for the Dresden Monarchs (German Vice Champion 2013) plays Running-Back, receives passes, returns Kickoffs and Punts, has thrown the occasional pass (e.g. in the game against the Vienna Vikings of the 2014 big 6 EFL season) and catched the occasional interception.141.30.210.129 (talk) 23:28, 14 September 2014 (UTC)
