Reorganisation of article
editWow... first section to the talk page - may not get a response for a while! Anyway:
I think this article could do with little reorganisation. At the moment it is composed of the standard wikipedia-style introduction text (which isn't too bad actually) a history section (which is adequate) and a modern day section.
- The introduction is quite good, although I think the Head of College and the Dean of Medicine should get a specific mention here, in addition the the side-box information. I may add that tonight if I have time, although I try not to edit pages without a talk page discussion first.
- I think the history section is adequate - it contains the major landmarks of the medical school's past in a chronological order. I suggest a 'Notable Alumni' section or subsection to append to the existing text, and possibly a 'Notable Staff' section. I seem to remember a number of commemorative 'blue plaques' on the front of the school, so these should get a mention. Major discoveries and developments that were found by research staff could go there too. (For example, I think the discoverer of the dystrophin gene/protein is an old student?)
- The final section 'About the Medical School today' is a bit of catch-all for other, more modern information. It states the current building, grades and other application requirements (although not together: the grade requirements and mention of the UKCAT are in different paragraphs. This needs addressing) along with other course information. The middle of this section reads like an excerpt from the university prospectus, and I think it has an inappropriate tone for an encyclopaedia. Also of note is that the normal format of a institution's page is something along the lines of:
- intro
- history (up to modern times)
- modern organisation (in greater detail than history section)
- reputation and standing in tables
- different courses (and application info)
- library and other notable resources
- notable alumni and staff
- affiliations in UK and abroad (other schools/societies)
This is how I think the page should end up being organised.
Of course, any suggestions/contributions are welcome - just add a reply!
