The University Hospital, Ayr, was many years in the planning, during the early part of which it was referred to as the South Ayrshire District General Hospital. However, the example of the North Ayrshire District General Hospital (later Crosshouse Hospital), which came to be referred to by NHS staff as "Nadge" (from the initials NADGH) led to a change of designation.
