What should be included in the table edit

Age edit

do we require to put the age of the ministers in the table as it requires updation routinly—Preceding unsigned comment added by Puthussery (talkcontribs) 10:09, June 16, 2009

If the age must be in the table, then it should be listed as year of birth and not as a number of years to prevent this problem. However, I see no reason to include age at all, and propose that this column be removed. Does anyone have a reason for listing the ages here in this table for comparison? All in Lok Sabha? edit

It is false that all previous PMs have been Lok Sabha members (Deve Gowda and Gujral were not) so I am changing that. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.172.63.5 (talk) 18:04, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Function of offices edit

It would be nice to have a description of the function of each of these offices. —75.42.174.181 23:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Right now each cabinet member is listed along with his office, and there are wikilinks associated with each office. It is enough to allow users to click on the name of the office to read about it. Blue Rasberry 19:41, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

SI No edit

Right now the first column is some kind of numbering system called the SI No. What is this? Is this an official ranking system, or just something left over from a table template? I propose that it be removed if it has no significance. Blue Rasberry 19:45, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Education edit

Right now the table includes a note about the education of each council member. This seems unnecessary to me because I know of no rule that says that proof of formal education is required to be a council member for the Indian government and also I do not think this information is necessary for understanding each member's position. I propose to move all information about education to each member's personal Wikipedia article. Any objections? Blue Rasberry 19:48, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Could someone please add images of all the ministers and the constituencies they represent - thank you Peelusrinivasan (talk) 21:15, 22 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Comparison of formats of tables edit

Please compare Wikipedia articles for national cabinets with me.

Here is the category page for national cabinets. Here is an example from the table for the United States Cabinet, which I feel is an excellent presentation.

Department Office Incumbent Image in Office since

Department of State
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton   January 21, 2009

Here is an example from the Cabinet of Germany, which I feel is adequate. Most countries' cabinet pages look like this one.

Office Incumbent Since Party
Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel 2005 CDU

Here is the table for India's cabinet.

Sl. No. Name Ministries Age House State/UT (Constituency) Education
1 Manmohan Singh Prime Minister of India and Other ministries not allocated to anyone 77 Rajya Sabha Assam PhD (Oxford)

If it were possible, I would like the page for India's cabinet to resemble the format for the page of America's cabinet. If I cannot find enough pictures to fill things in, then at least I would like the section headings and type of text information to match. Possibly also the constituency listings and house affiliations should stay also, because if I understand correctly, most members of the Indian cabinet simultaneously server as MPs. Would anyone object to me making changes here? Blue Rasberry 20:05, 6 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Title of this article edit

What is the correct name for this group of people? The current name of the article is "Union Council of Ministers of India". This group includes these three subgroups: Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State with Independent Charge, and Ministers of State. Here are some websites which call this group the "Council of Ministers":

Here is a source calling it the "Union Council of Ministers" The Pioneer (Indian newspaper). Probably there are other sources, but this seems to be a less-used name.

Especially because of the Indian government's use of the name "Council of Ministers" in two prominent places where they are naming things for the general public, I propose changing the name of this article to "Council of Ministers (India)" and having the other name redirect to this. Any comments? Please provide sources to support statements. Blue Rasberry 20:35, 9 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

User:Neelix just changed the name of the article from "'Union Council of Ministers of India' to 'Cabinet of India' (To be consistent with other articles about national cabinets.)" It is not obvious to me why this article should be named by the most obvious English-word description for what its subject is, when in fact the article's subject has a formal name which is definitely not "Cabinet of India". Neelix, could I invite you to comment? Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:25, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
According to Wikipedia's policy on article titles, "Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's 'official' name as an article title; it instead uses the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources." A Google Books search reveals that "Cabinet of India" is by far the more common name in English-language reliable sources; "Cabinet of India" receives 270 hits while "Union Council of Ministers of India" receives only 6. Also, "Cabinet of India" is far more consistent with the titles of other articles about national cabinets. For these reasons, I moved the article to the present title. Neelix (talk) 21:35, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
That sounds reasonable and I support your action entirely. This is a good resolution to the naming problem with this article. Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:48, 27 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

I've marked this article as needing an update as there was a cabinet reshuffle on 19 January 2011. See Cabinet reshuffle: 3 new ministers sworn in (Times of India). --Canley (talk) 01:27, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Article is outdated. edit

External affairs minister SM Krishna had resigned on Friday. Cabinet ministers Ambika Soni, Mukul Wasnik and SK Sahai, Ministers of state Mahadev Khandela (tribal affairs), Agatha Sangma (rural development) and Vincent Pala (water resources and minority affairs) also quit on Saturday. So the information provided here is incorrect and needs an update. Also it would be great if someone can pur "recent events" header. Thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.198.172.165 (talk) 07:35, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Someone put text on the page currently redirected to from CCEA, Council for the Curriculum, Examinations & Assessment regarding the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs. Does this committee need an article - a quick Google suggests it might be able to establish material to justify a page - could someone confirm/clarify? Ethnic background section and details edit

request edit

This article has been edited by user: SanjayMohan to reflect racist attitudes against a large section of the population of India.

I am not an expert and so I do not feel comfortable editing the article.

I take issue with comments on the page including: -There are three times as many Bengalis as Punjabis, and they are more talented, honest and hardworking than Punjabis -There are as many Malayalis as Punjabis, and they are more talented, honest and hardworking than Punjabis, yet not a single seat was assigned to a Malayali. -There are 1.5 times as many Oriyas as Punjabis, and they are more talented, honest and hardworking than Punjabis, -In a major coup against India and Prime Minister Modi, Punjabis have maneuvered to take control of 5 out of 24 cabinet positions

This is my first time requesting edits, so apologies if this has been done incorrectly. -- 24.52.236.10 (talk) 02:56, 28 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 12 April 2016 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: Moved. Consensus that the name is unambiguous, and there is no other organisation of this name. As already noted below, WP:PRECISE does not expect us to disambiguate against subjects that don't even exist.  — Amakuru (talk) 08:39, 20 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Union Council of Ministers of IndiaUnion Council of Ministers – A redirect has long existed. "of India" is rather unnecessary. – Filpro (talk) 21:23, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Filpro: This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 21:46, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • There are many organizations among government ministers in the world. We need to state which country here. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 21:46, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Although I agree with you that there many organizations among government ministers of the world, there is only one with such a title and topic. This case is similar to the unnecessary adding of "Indian", "of India", and "(India)" across Wikipedia.
Examples include:
Heck, they even wanted to move Department of Space to Department of Space, Government of India or Department of Space of the Indian Government. Ridiculous.Filpro (talk) 23:10, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose – "Union Council of Ministers" is potentially ambiguous, and I see no benefit to removing the "of India", which helps identify the topic in line with WP:PRECISE. RGloucester 22:31, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • The title with the "of India" suffix violates the exact policy that you referenced. It states, "Usually, titles should be precise enough to unambiguously define the topical scope of the article, but no more precise than that." There is no other Union Council of Ministers than the one in India, so being overly precise by adding the suffix violates policy, unless there is a specific policy or guideline to suggest otherwise (as per the Leeds North West example mentioned in the section you linked to). --Joshua Issac (talk) 21:22, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
It is not overly precise. "Union Council of Ministers" could conceivably refer to something else, even if it doesn't in actuality. Because of this, it does not define the scope of the article in a way that I find to be acceptable. RGloucester 21:37, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
The title "could conceivably refer to something else, even if it doesn't in actuality"? Isn't that true of any title? Should all titles be disambiguated based on phantom or fantasy topics?  AjaxSmack  23:18, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
There is no need for a special exception here. --Joshua Issac (talk) 21:22, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Template:Modi ministry edit

Template:Modi ministry formet currently used on both , Union Council of Ministers and Modi ministry is not so effective! I think union council of minister should be listed all three category separately

  • Cabinet Ministers
  • MoS (independent charge)---(first portfolio then name of MoS)
  • MoS-----(also first portfolio)

+++++other changing reshuffle is not relevant for this article! rather for Modi Ministry . for example Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs listed on template is relevant for modi ministry but not for Cabinet of India as it currently defunct or submerged! 3 Ministries previously held by cabinet minister but currently under MoST --- important issue for Modi Ministry but not for union Cabinet! why they are in Cabinet Minister list !!!Template:Modi ministry is perfectly okey for article Modi ministry but not here !here should be only the current ministries and ministers not the reshuffle history !!!After banal Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Modi ministry, its important now to clear up the fact and differences of both articles!! ——134.95.7.246 (talk) 08:01, 26 April 2017 (UTC) User:CAPTAIN RAJU, any thoughts !? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.95.7.246 (talk) 08:12, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hide "Left office" column from all the tables edit

All the tables in section Union Council of Ministers#Current Union Council of Ministers have a column "Life office". All the values for this column are same i.e. "Incumbent".

Can we remove this column as the values are redundant, especially given the title of the section "Current Union Council of Ministers". If the list is of CURRENT ministers, they will all be incumbent by default. Waonderer (talk) 15:52, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Currently, the council is headed by prime minister Narendra Modi and consists of 29 members, including the prime minister.

This is incorrect. The correct information is: After the reshuffling, the Council of Ministers comprises the PM and 78 ministers. In the 2024 Council of Ministers, there are 29 Cabinet Ministers, 3 Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and 47 Ministers of State.

What has been mentioned in the article is 'Cabinet' rank ministers which are 29 but in reality the Council of Ministers is 79. Riteshwari (talk) 22:03, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello.
You can refer to the following link: https://www.pmindia.gov.in/en/news_updates/portfolios-of-the-union-council-of-ministers-2/
or
https://www.bjp.org/union-council-of-ministers
Cabinet ministers = 28 + 1 (PM)
MoS (independent charge) = 3
MoS = 44
Hence, 29 ministers refers only to the 'cabinet'. Entire council currently is = 76. Riteshwari (talk) 22:20, 10 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
