How old was Brian Drysdale?

I was just browsing the changes to this article since I added the nameplate picture in December 2005. I noticed that Brain Dysdale's age had been changed from 48 to 39, with a BBC News article cited in the edit summary. I decided to double check this, and I've found that with the exception of one BBC News article [1] that gives his age as 39, every other source gives it has 48 - including another BBC News report [2], The Centre for Corportate Accountability [3] and The Times Online [4]. The latter gives his birthdate as February 10, 1956, which would make him 48 years, 8 months, 28 days (including the end date) old on the day of the crash [5]. I have therefore changed the article to say he was 48. Thryduulf 01:42, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

26 January 2010 death at Ufton Nervet

I think it was a suicide. Perhaps suicides are not counted as railway accidents if nobody on the train is injured. Biscuittin (talk) 21:55, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Murder-suicide?

I've tried to add Category:Murder-suicides in the United Kingdom, but I don't know who to type the long dash needed. Had he lived, he'd have been put on trial. Jim Michael (talk) 14:59, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Petition

I'm really not convinced that the 2012 petition started by an individual is worthy of inclusion on this page. As an editor objected to me removing it, I have decided to discuss here rather than revert.

Apparently this petition (http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/make-ufton-nervet-level-crossing-safer) has received coverage from BBC Berks. Can we verify this? The 6 July BBC story mentions a petition started by the Lib Dems, but I can see no evidence to suggest that these two petitions are the same thing.

If we can provide sources to show that the petition is of note, such as a news story that explicitly mentions it and we are able to verify the exact petition they refer to, then I'm all for its inclusion. However, mentioning the founding individual's name is definitely not relevant or notable, so I have removed this. Thanks, matt (talk) 10:46, 7 July 2012 (UTC)

Undue weight of bridge section

I feel that now the bridge is completed and opened, there's no need for the minutiae of the process of opening one. Of course it's sensible to have outline, but it seems like the section documents the entire process. Are there any objections to me having a bit of a cull? I think we ought to leave out things like the online petition; these are not necessarily demonstrative of public opinion (they only count votes "for") and considering the context of the rail crash (i.e. the remit of this article) I feel that the minute detail of things like the petition is irrelevant. Suicide terminology

Suicide terminology and a number of journalism style guide explains that there are good reasons not to use commit in this context. This isn't about sympathy for the driver but about how Wikipedia reflects mental health.--FDent (talk) 11:58, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

This is covered in the Manual of Style, which says:

"The phrase committed suicide is not banned at the English Wikipedia [...] There are many other appropriate, common, and encyclopedic ways to describe a suicide"

Like the OP, I am in favour of not using the phrase "committed suicide", but on the English Wikipedia there is an argument for WP:AINT. That said, the article lead uses the wording "An inquest found that the crash was caused by the suicide of the car driver"; would we please all parties if the article body was similar to this wording, if nothing else but for consistency?
