Willie Boy Story

I'd assumed that the movie referred to was Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (1969) but, according the Wikipedia article on that movie Willie boy died (in actuality and in the film) and has a grave marker near Landers, CA. The story happened in the same area, so probably still IS the same, but I'm not sure enough of the facts to put it into the article. - Rapscallion (talk) 23:26, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Well someone deleted it. It was "Carlota, the daughter of William Mike, a Twentynine Palms Chemehuevi Amerindian who had moved his family to the Gilman Ranch in the Coachella Valley near Banning, was part of a tragedy that rocked Southern California in 1909, and has since been the subject of books and a movie. A cousin named Willie Boy fell in love with her, but their marriage was forbidden because they were cousins. He persuaded her to elope with him, but her father tracked them and brought them back. Accounts vary with respect to what followed, but agree that Willie Boy shot and killed William Mike, perhaps by accident, escaped with Carlota into the desert, was tracked by a Sheriff's posse, and left Carlota hidden in a wash with his coat and waterskin. She died, either shot by the posse by mistake, or due to exposure. According to Chemehuevi tradition, Willie Boy escaped, but has not been seen again(ref)Trafzer et al. 1997:86-90)(endref)"

Geography

The location statement at the end of this section is incorrect. Twentynine Palms may be halfway (approximately) between L.A. and Phoenix, but definitely not between L.A. and Las Vegas. Greg M., So Cal resident 10:14 a.m., 1 August 2007 (UTC)

We are here in Palm Springs and saw something interesting happening in Twentynine Palms; it would be nice to have a map that shows proximity to the dozen towns around, rather than the only excellent existing map of all of California. A Mapquest on Twentynine Palms, CA, shows I'm totally off base and we won't be going there since there is the Joshua Tree National Park between us, and it is nowhere near Palm Spring, CA. Still, a second map would help and save time for readers.

Thanks for your suggestion. We don't do this sort of thing in Wikipedia because it distracts from the article. That is, Palm Springs has its own article, as does Joshua Tree. It is not important to 29 Palms to "be" anywhere proximate to anywhere else. That is, each place is stand-alone and not a vector to some other place. That may not help you, but it's not intended to be a Travel Guide. For that perhaps see WikiTravel. Student7 (talk) 23:24, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

29 Palms is 65 square miles of land area, which should be the largest city by size in the Inland Empire region of southern CA (San Bernardino and Riverside counties), although it has about 20,000 residents, the land area would definitely have a very low population density per square mile. 2605:E000:100D:E482:4CA4:5F14:7253:D936 (talk) 17:36, 28 October 2019 (UTC)

Popular culture

Twentynine Palms was also a running gag of one program by the then popular radio comedian Jack Benny, whose program "chauffeur," Rochester, kept telephoning from "Twentyeight palms" etc. When corrected about the name, Rochester would reply, "Not anymore," presumably having ruined one of the palms driving. 1999 Earthquake?

I read this story ([1]) and saw mention that "The largest earthquake in recent years in California was a magnitude 7.1 in 1999, Hutton said. But it was centered in the desert, near Twentynine Palms, in a sparsely populated area." Yet there's no mention of a quake on this page. Did the 7.1 quake (at Hector_Mine) not even affect the town? Seems hard to believe. Any relevant information about the quake that could be linked to the page? Dave (talk) 16:05, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

The 7.3 1992 Landers earthquake was closer & stronger, but Hector Mine felt stronger here. That energy has a direction, aside from magnitude. It makes a difference whether you stand beside or in front of a shotgun.

The geographic location isn't really germane unless it was actually centered in 29Palms. We need a WP:RS to explain the affect (if any) on the town, itself. Student7 (talk) 23:04, 23 April 2015 (UTC)

Dick Dale residency verification

While it may prove difficult to find citation, I've lived in the area on and off for 20 years, run into Dick at the hardware store, know where his house and private runway are located... it's true.JT (talk) 16:49, 23 April 2012 (UTC)
