Criticism edit

I reverted, however removed 'alleged' - a POV slipup on my part. This is only affecting the small proportion of users who are using said banned trackers. Whether or not it is a problem is up for debate given that two parties have offered differing opinions on the matter. Thus, why should it take up such a large proportion of the article (as it did in the previous edit)? This is an encyclopaedia, not a place to air grievances. At this rate, we'll have an essay on the merits of announce times, with footnotes from the forum thread to boot! Fight your battles in the appropriate places.Suicup 14:21, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thats probably fair enough, but the current thread link in the article is primarily a discussion on the clients first banning, not its announce interval problems. I think think the other thread link (the 'banned again' one) is probably a bit more informative, especially since it has several comments from various developers as well as the author of the patch that fixes the issue and exactly why it is a problem. I still think 'whether or not it is really a problem' implies some sort of doubt on the claim that it hammers the tracker rather than conveying the message that the authors of the program have done this by design though. I have read through the relevant thread and it seems the lead developer (titer) is working on a solution which will 'make everyone happy' (his words) [1]. The reason i said it isn't a problem per se is that a) it seems this issue only affects a small number of people and b) the developers (at least in that thread) don't think it is a 'problem'. Thus, given it is their software, and i don't think they are being intentionally malicious, i think we should give them the benefit of the doubt. Given we are writing an encyclopaedia article we should be looking at the entire picture, not just from the perspective a microcosm of Transmission users. I will change the link though. Interface edit

Yes, transmission like probably all linux software has a CLI as well as GUI, here's the proof for you if you like with the command "transmissioncli -h":

License edit

The current license (below) indicates that only portions of Transmission are licensed under the MIT license, the rest under a modified GPL v2 license. As such, the MIT-license portions cannot run without the GPL portions, so the project should probably just be classified as using a modified GPL v2 license.

The OS X client, CLI client, and parts of libtransmission are licensed
under the terms of the MIT license.

The Transmission daemon, GTK+ client, Qt client, Web client, and most of
libtransmission are licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL version 2,
with two special exceptions:

  1. The MIT-licensed portions of Transmission listed above are exempt
from GPLv2 clause 2(b) and may retain their MIT license.

  2. Permission is granted to link the code in this release with the
OpenSSL project's 'OpenSSL' library and to distribute the linked
executables. Works derived from Transmission may, at their authors'
discretion, keep or delete this exception.

Agreed. I’ve changed the article accordingly. Ahruman (talk) 12:09, 21 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Itransmission edit

Does anyone think that it would be a good idea to start a section on iTransmission (the iDevice BitTorent client)? Apparently it uses the same source code as Transmission. Tonyxc600 (talk) 11:49, 11 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Transmission (BitTorrent client)Transmission (software) – More common taxo. --Relisted. George Ho (talk) 18:41, 21 May 2015 (UTC) – RezonansowyakaRezy (talk Reply

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:32, 12 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • @Rezonansowy: "Transmission (software)" is not clear enough. There are many ways that transmission can get involved wth software. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 20:32, 12 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Strong oppose no idea what you mean. This is clearly not the only use of "transmission" as it relates to the topic of 'software'. This isn't even close to the the most common uses of the term "transmission" in relation to 'software'. Indeed all telecom software involve "transmission". -- 65.94.43.89 (talk) 04:25, 14 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Moved to Github edit

The code has been moved to Github, yet the repository URL in the infobox points to their old TRAC. I haven't found out how to change the URL :S. Orgyn (talk) 13:00, 8 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Right you are. Took me a while to figure it out. ;-) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_software mentions for the "repo" parameter: "In the absence of this parameter, infobox attempts to acquire the repository link from Wikidata. This parameter overrides the Wikidata link" so I looked for the Wikidata page for Transmission and made the change there: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q875055&diff=534118409&oldid=531075764 I wonder how long it takes for the change to affect the Wikipedia article… Robby.is.on (talk) 16:57, 8 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Looks like it has taken effect now. :-) Robby.is.on (talk) 16:58, 8 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
