Cleanup / Attention notes

  • Traffic shaping — difficult to follow, could use major improvements. I made some edits, but I'm no expert. -Markaci 2005-05-24 T 05:21 Z

Moved from Wikipedia:Pages needing attention/Computer science 15apr06

Have edited the "Bit Torrent" section to remove some blatantly non-NPOV statements. There are legitimate reasons to prioritise real-time applications (web, VOIP) over downloads (ftp, bittorrent). At the same time, ISPs using traffic shaping as an excuse to avoid upgrading their infrastructure is still an issue.

"Bit Torrents" looks very wrong to my eye. There is no plural to that word I believe. Should be BitTorrent or BitTorrent traffic. If no objections I'll go change it.

I made some edits throughout the article, but it still needs a lot of work, a lot of grammatical problems throughout the article.. I also am no expert, but the section related to P2P seems very confusing and does not cite sources for many of the claims. I don't understand how script kiddies relate to mainstream usage, the entire paragraph is difficult to read. Also, maybe it's just me, but parts of the article seem to be advertising certain ISPs/Companies that provide traffic shaping technology by using external links disguised as references.

Traffic Classification section

edit

I've been trying to tidy up the "traffic classification" section of this article but I've concluded that this section isn't about Traffic Shaping at all (or even about policing). It's also all specifically about traffic classification in ISP networks, with a particular slant on domestic ISPs and a long section about p2p file-sharing applications. I think a separate article on computer network traffic classification, or alternatively including it in the bandwidth management or teletraffic engineering articles would be better. Anyone got any opinions? Behind The Wall Of Sleep (talk) 14:07, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Three years on and I'm starting to think no-one else is bothered... ;) I re-read the article and I think it's still hard to follow (and I'm sure my own edits have contributed to this) so I might make an article called "traffic classification" as a home for stuff that really is just about classification. It's of wider significance than just shaping (billing, net neutrality, opaqueness of traffic and so on) and I think it deserves its own page. The term isn't that widely used, but I think that's because it's going on invisibly as an input to some other process. I guess we'll see how it gets on... as it exists today, Traffic shaping § Traffic classification seems like reasonable context information. Classification may be used before shaping. ~Kvng (talk) 02:55, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

What does traffic shaping accomplish?

edit

It seems that the goal of traffic shaping is not clear in the article. Delaying packets will read to higher latency, but it won't limit bandwidth, right? What is the goal that traffic shaping seeks to solve? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 185.224.57.132 (talk) 15:03, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
