Not 'Irrefutable' edit

The word 'irrefutable' in the first sentence is too strong. As I remember it, the work of Bolton and that of Webster & Murdin was regarded as making it very likely that the unseen companion of Cygnus X-1 was a black hole, but as not proving it. They were unable to exclude the possibility that the binary system was oriented in such a way that allowed the unseen companion to be a neutron star. This loop-hole wasn't closed until the 1990's when the X-ray novae V616 Monocertotis (A0620-00) and V404 Cygni were shown to have unseen companions that were definitely too massive to be neutron stars.
