Thrangu Monastery (Richmond, British Columbia)Thrangu Monastery (Richmond) – I had previously moved this article to Thrangu Monastery (Richmond), but it was moved back with an edit summary stating that the disambiguator should match the title of the Richmond, British Columbia article. There are no policies or guidelines that require this kind of correlation, but we do have a policy on precision in disambiguation which states that we should "use only as much additional detail as necessary" when creating disambiguators and we have a policy on conciseness in article titles stating that article titles should be "no longer than necessary to identify the article's subject and distinguish it from other subjects." It is also very common for articles about places of worship to include in their titles only the city name when a disambiguator is required; see, for example, Christian Science Society (Nanaimo). Because this is the only Thrangu Monastery in any Richmond, and "Thrangu Monastery (Richmond)" is a considerably shorter title than "Thrangu Monastery (Richmond, British Columbia", I recommend that the shorter title be adopted. Could you be more specific? I based my comment on two factors: WP:MOSCAN and WP:NC-TIBET have nothing specifically on buildings; instead I have followed the suggestion at WP:Naming conventions (architecture), i.e. "monasteries under the same dedication... the location should be used without brackets and with comma". I'll have to dig them out tomorrow, it's 2 am here and I've been putting out fires in other places for the last two hours and more....MOSCAN may not be where to look; and dabs are a convention, the comma-province guidelines for communities, for example i.e. vis no-comma-province on unique names, e.g. Vancouver, is a convention, not a guideline, but increasingly applied across the board; I'll find buildings examples, there are some, and see what I can find on WP:CANADA....a look around the subcats of Category:Buildings and structures in Canada and Category:Places of worship in Canada may demonstrate my point well. More tomorrow, it's beddy-bye time.Skookum1 (talk) 19:05, 14 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
OK, found Category:Churches in Vancouver, Anglican churches in British Columbia, Category:Roman Catholic churches in British Columbia, demonstrating the use of the parentheses rather than comma-province in unique or, as in the case of Vancouver, primary-use city-names; I have yet to find a "(Canada)" dab, but that is most likely because in the cases where disambiguation is necessary, there is not only one in Canada. The cathedral and basilica categories are unique names in some cases so really don't require dabs e.g. Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral in Montreal and the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St John's, Newfoundland. I note that though in BC the parentheses-dabs are (now) standard (I've just moved Church of the Holy Cross (Skatin) from the comma-province one, they are not in most other provinces; I'll field this discussion by WP:Canada, though I've already put it on the RM noticeboard there. I'll look for building-dabs next.Skookum1 (talk) 10:06, 15 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
