Thomas Oliver is the major link in the old and well known theory that Bridget Bishop was executed on trumped up charges because her second husband's family with his first wife wanted what she had inherited from him. Aside from her own assertion that she was not a witch and the MA Gen Ct's 2 times having passed legislation agreeing with her assertion and nullifying the judgment of 1692, and Upham's having clearly thought this scenario was true. There is a possibilty that the wife of one of the judges was related to the Olivers. However that the judge's wife's grandmother's? sirname was Oliver also be relevant here.

I have done quite a bit of editing here, and think it may be time to remove one or both of the tags.John5Russell3Finley 00:44, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

recent changes

I readded the first name to the 2d Par of the intro: with a last name so like a first name it seemed to me to sound better this way. If you are gonna put all that effert into scubbing this thing for PC etc why is there still a style tag ? Magdalen Oliver

This is an old connection I think it is not in Torrey, but I found this when I was researching marriages that were in Torrey, so this is from some source or other in the WRHS Library, and it would have been a published source, a quarto with a smell of the early 20th century but in its original binding at the time. What this means is that it was established as probably true amoungst the American Genealogical Community during the time of the Old Library at the WRHS in Cleveland at its present location. Seems a little silly to remove the reference to her since this is likely very important if not pivotal to the reason at the base of the family feud that seems to have started all the executions in Salem that began in June 1692. Failing any reason for it's removal I would really like to see it put back. viz: One of the judges in the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Trials was married to the granddaughter of a woman whose name was Magdalen Ollyver. (This is from a Genealogy of the Winslow Family whose sister was married to 1 of the judges, and would have been in the open stacks when the late Mr. Colket was there), best guess is if somebody wants to do editing maybe improving the sources rather than removing the information would make it more encyclopedia like ??? I need to do more research before adding name, same for the j.'s wife and her grandmother and page number for inline cite in the other sentance.
