Talk:Statler and Waldorf

The Brothers Grimm edit

"Other appearances" earlier included, as the last listing, "Statler and Waldorf both appeared in the 2005 film The Brothers Grimm, where they both serve as supporting characters, comedy reliefs, and residents of the village of Marbaden, as they both help the Grimms (Matt Damon and Heath Ledger) out with their adventure, as they provide some comic relief, and comment on the events throughout the entire film."

Origins of Waldorf edit

In a commercial 1969 film made by Henson for IBM "The Paperwork Explosion", an old man appears who is very clearly the model for Waldorf. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IZw2CoYztk — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pemboid (talkcontribs) 10:07, 16 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wrong or what? edit

""It is believed that the full names of the two are Jason D. Statler and Jon D. Waldorf, named after the founders of the Statler and Waldorf hotels."" I checked and Statler and Waldrof hotels weren't founded by "Jon D Waldorf" or "Jason D Statler" but by Ellsworth Milton Statler and the Waldorf-Astoria cousins, Willaim and John Jacob... No single Jason, no single D as a middle name. This needs quotations, justifications, etc.Undead Herle King 12:18, 29 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

According to the Muppet Wiki pages Waldorf's first name is Conrad. Another pun on the hotel connection : The Conrad Hilton. --Fkvdmark (talk) 09:29, 3 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Too many quotes edit

The quotes section is really too long - a couple of the best should be selected with the rest being transwikied to Wikiquote. Thryduulf 15:54, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's a good idea. One of my favorite Statler & Waldorf quotes is:

  • -I think Gonzo should quit while he's ahead.
-Gonzo should quit while he's alive!
-Ho ho ho ho ho!

I could imagine them saying the same thing about David Blaine. Chris 17:21, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

quote explanation edit

  • - Ah that's nothing, anyone can drop their pants
- I didn't know you were Lithuanian

What the heck does that mean?

Seconded. For reference, the quote was added by 85.220.107.98 on 22 August 2006; this was the only edit from that IP address, and also added "better get out your old army uniform" (which I don't get either) and "Where is the land of the rising sun?" (which I do, and which sounds like just the sort of joke S&W would crack). Emurphy42 15:07, 25 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

-It was a joke specific to the show. Spike Milligan was the guest, and as part of his act he dropped his pants to show his Union Jack boxers. The implication is that Waldorf had the Lithuanian flag on his. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.84.20.23 (talk) 21:53, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

-It's also a sly reference to an old joke. When a man's genitals are exposed, an observer notes, "I didn't know you were Jewish" - implying the man is circumcised. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.78.245.182 (talk) 20:33, 27 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Quotes? edit

Where are all the quotes? They have been deleted from the site and they are not in Wikiquote. When will they appear there? Oh and a good advice:

Give Statler and Waldorf their own page on Wikiquote with a link to the Muppet Show.

Trading Places edit

The first time I saw the movie Trading Places I was struck by how Randolph and Mortimer Duke (played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche) resembled Statler and Waldorf. Or rather, Statler and Waldorf could serve as caricatures of Randolph and Mortimer. They even sound similar. I know it's coincidental; after all, he casting director of Trading Places didn't pick those two guys for their resemblance to the Muppet duo... or did they? Anyone else notice this? Or is this original research on my part? -209.225.225.89 23:11, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

____________________________________________ Exactly why I am researching the Duke bros and S&W

___________________________________________ I have no idea if this was or wasn't, but I noticed that too. It could be coincidence or a calculated maneuver. 24.8.50.83 (talk) 03:45, 25 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

____________________________________________ I agree. In my memory from watching Trading Places I actually thought the Dukes were called Statler and Waldorf! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.170.146.85 (talk) 22:04, 3 January 2014 (UTC) ____________________________________________ add me to the list. i always assumed that S&W were a spoof of them...altho i now see that the muppet versions were, in fact, FIRST. seems a bit odd for the humans to have been picked for any resemblance in the other direction, but who knows? maybe subconsciously the producer/casting dir had them in mind somehow. 209.172.23.57 (talk) 01:30, 7 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Youtube heckleu24 edit

The characters have a series of videos on Youtube as user heckleu247. Might want to add that information to the page.

In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Waldorf's wife edit

Hi:

I think she appeared once. Her name was, predictably, Astoria. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.157.183.193 (talk) 23:12, 20 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

mention Staldorf and Watler? edit

Should the article mention Staldorf and Watler? They are two characters from Storm Hawks television show. stormhawks.com describes them as "prickly" so I'm guessing they are inspired by Statler and Waldorf. --EarthFurst (talk) 05:39, 3 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

"It is commonly, although erroneously, believed that the models for these characters were Dr. Ainsley James Grant and the Right Honorable Joseph O'Banion." edit

Are either of these people real or is this a hoax? AlmostReadytoFly (talk) 11:50, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

In Pixar's PRESTO edit

Do we know that is really them at the 2:38 mark in the film? We need a citation from an independent 3rd party confirming that it's not a coincidential lookalike. SpikeJones (talk) 20:45, 26 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

May be a stupid question edit

Old Vaudeville gag edit

It was an old gag in vaudeville acts to name a character after the classiest hotel in the city they were playing. Even the Marx Brothers called Margaret Dumont "Mrs. Rittenhouse" in some of their movies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.128.62.1 (talk) 19:06, 17 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
