Talk:St Michael and All Angels Church, Headingley

name of article edit

The church is locally called St Michael's much more commonly than "Headingley parish church", and its own website says "Welcome to:- St. Michael & All Angels Headingley - Welcome to St. Michael's website". I can't find anything in WP:NAME about a convention for churches, and looking at Category:United Kingdom church stubs shows a nightmare of different forms. I think this article should probably be at St Michael and All Angels, Headingley, or some variant of that (with umpteen redirects from alternative capitalisations, angels omitted, St./St/Saint, "Church of...", and/& - and from the current title, of course). What do you think? (I could have been WP:BOLD and moved it, but thought it more civilised to discuss!) PamD (talk) 09:11, 16 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Having looked around more at churches (eg Category:Grade I listed churches), I now suggest that we should call it St Michael's Church, Headingley, with redirects from Church of St Michael, Headingley - St Michael and All Angels, Headingley - Church of St Michael and All Angels, Headingley - St Michael and All Angels Church, Headingley, and perhaps also copies of those with "St.", and of course Headingley Parish Church. POssibly one or two using "&". Looks a bit like overkill, but it might help people find it and, as important, prevent anyone accidentally creating a duplicate site at another plausible title! infobox edit

I'd like to suggest we use {{Infobox religious building}}, as is used for many UK churches, rather than {{Parish church}}. I've had a go at it as you can see here. It includes all the information which is in the existing one, except for some of the personnel - and they are all accessible through the church web site. What do you think? being bold edit

I've gone ahead and made the changes I outlined above - moved page, created multiple redirects, changed infobox. PamD (talk) 15:21, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Correct position edit

As I'm new to using Wiki I'm not sure if this can be changed but David Walls who you have down as an organist is actually the choirmaster. This is my Church so I have full knowledge of this.

I have corrected the spelling of a churchwardens name.

Welcome and sorry but the template does not have any fields for choir related items - nearest is Music group which is not particularly helpful. Take a look at {{Parish church}} for available fields in the template, though it looks like the documentation has not been updated in line with changes in the template. Missing Vicar edit

Looking at the list of vicars you have one missing. Between Ralph Emmerson and Owen Conway there should be Christopher Luxmore.

Parish formation edit

I'm trying to find out a bit more about the formation of the parish of Headingley. I know that it was carved out of the once large parish of Leeds (probably why the Rector of Leeds is patron of the parish), and that is was first a chapelry of the parish of Leeds, served by a chaplain; later it became a parish with a vicar. According to sparse information on Clergy of the Church of England Database, I can make out the following, but I don't think this is completely accurate:

1540-1717: Headingley-cum-Burley (chapelry), in Leeds (parish)
1717, separated from Leeds: Headingley-cum-Burley (parish)(?)
1793, split: Headingley (parish)

Any thoughts?
