I was a patient in one of "the cottages" in the 1970's. They had seclusion rooms then. You were locked up 24/7 because anyone who was at all senseable would want to escape. I tried to escape and got tackled at the 50 yard line by the goon squad. Goon squads purpose was to break up fights and tackle escapers. Daily activity consisted of 10 minute open canteen for smokes and candy for those with money on deposit, opening the pool (billards) room for an hour, eating and showers. The worst part of it though was the over crowding. There was not enough chairs to sit down except in the dining room. If you took more then 10 minutes, yes 10 minutes, to eat the goon squad sent you packing and locked the dining room. When asked about opening the dining room so we could sit down goon squad replyed not enough employees. So you walked in circles until someone got up. Then someone would sit down. We called this musical chairs. If any fights broke out over chairs seclusion rooms were available. Years later I would read about how keeping people in this kind of condition (musical chairs) is called torture by Amnesty International. I left Maryland years. I don't know anyone who can verify this. At the same time I would like to know who can verify the goody two shoes story. |
