Special forces or specialist

edit

I am unsure whether the named special forces units are actually SF's or merely specialist units. In other armies a K-9 or a mountain warfare unit would be regarded as a specialist unit, not as a special forces unit. For instance Unit Alpinistim, the IDF mountain warfare unit. It is the only unit trained to operate in mountains. Does that make it a special forces unit? Is the US army's 10th Mountain Division also a special forces unit? I think that the definition of Israeli special forces needs to be reviewed.203.184.41.226 (talk) 00:31, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Unit Alpinistim is an SF unit whose job is to provide a counter-enemy SF capability for the protection of the listening posts on Mount Hermon and Har Avital, as well as alpine/mountain rescue. It is a reserve unit filled with operators who previously served in Sayeret Golani and Sayeret Egoz, and is the only unit AFAIK with the specific mission of Counter-SF. 10th Mountain Division personnel aren't of the same high quality. They and the Israeli unit have a different mission altogether. 110.146.180.13 (talk) 14:02, 28 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Female soldiers

edit

Are female soldiers part of the special forces? In the IDF female soldiers are very much stronger present than in other armies I think. --Exodianecross (talk) 00:49, 6 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

indeed, the female soldiers are really strong and well trained.
although it is very rare to find a female in the IDF special forces
but in the last few years, the IDF putting some effort about female soldiers getting into the IDF SF Kavkazian64 (talk) 10:17, 26 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Meaning of sayeret

edit
  1. Special reconnaissance unit is probably correct, not simply reconnaissance unit.
  2. What does it literally mean? Is it an acronym? Of what?
