Fair use rationale for Image:Scut logo.jpg

edit

Image:Scut logo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Alumni

edit

this list was unsourced, and i have moved it here to be checked for sources prior to reinstating any names. please either link to articles, or provide sources OTHER than the university alumni page, which is NOT proof of notability, as alumni pages list EVERYONE.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 22:13, 19 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

ps all names on this list are in reverse order of WP convention, so reverse before redlinking.

Additions by User talk:155.69.2.10

edit

I reverted the above IP's additions to South China University of Technology for the following reasons:

  • Dumping a huge quantity of unformatted, unlinked, machine-translated text (some of which is gibberish) into the article serves no useful purpose.
  • Adding a list of names requires that those featured in it are in some way notable.
  • Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a vehicle for promoting things. Text peppered with the words "best" and "famous" is a sure sign that content serves no encyclopedic purpose.

I left a message on the IP's talk page but (s)he has chosen to ignore my comments, revert my reversion and further admits that these additions are a machine translation of copyrighted material and therefore WP:COPYVIO.

I'm not sure whether to tag the page {{copyvio}} or what. ► Philg88 ◄  talk 11:22, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Philg88 and IP 155.69.2.10! I have deleted the new content again because the machine translation makes no sense whatsoever. I would be more than willing to translate a sentence or two, but the new content is just too long. The entire content is translated from the Baidu article on this university, so this constitutes a copyright violation. Note also that Baidu is *not* considered a reliable source because, like Wikipedia, anybody can edit it.
All the best, Madalibi (talk) 13:47, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
Philg88 ◄  talk 14:28, 15 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
The most recently added text is written in decent English, but this is because it is copied directly from the university's official website.[1] This is unfortunately a copyright violation Wikipedia is very strict about copyrights, so this content cannot stay there. Also, "reliable sources" (可靠来源) need to be published by a "third party" (第三方). This means that the official website is not "reliable" for information about the university's fame or excellence. There are many other problems with the article, which I can list here too. But first could Wikihalper1942 answer these concerns? Thank you! Madalibi (talk) 03:02, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

若有不足,欢迎添加与修改 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikihalper1942 (talkcontribs) 03:39, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

[Translation added by Madalibi: "Hello Philg88 and 155.69.2.10! The newly added content all comes from the [university's] official website and from the website of the Ministry of Education. The English is the original version [found on these websites], not Google translation. Maybe a few parts need to be worked on a little. All the data is referenced. If something is lacking in quality, you are welcome to add it or modify it." Madalibi (talk) 05:52, 16 March 2014 (UTC)]Reply

Hi again, Wikihalper1942, and thanks for moving the discussion here. “英语都是原版”:问题就在这里。Wikipedia不允许套用别的网站的内容。这叫作“侵犯著作权”。Wikipedia这方面很严格,所以恐怕不能保留新内容。还有,有关大学的文章必须依靠可以信赖的,独立的可靠来源。官方网站不是“独立”的。如果想多了解有关大学的文章的标准,可以去看WP:UNIV。可惜没有中文版。Madalibi (talk) 03:57, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
[Translation added by Madalibi: "'The English is the original version': this is the problem. Wikipedia does not allow to borrow content directly from other websites. This is called a "copyright violation". Also, articles on universities must rest on independent, third-party "reliable sources". The university's official website is not "independent". If you want to know more about the standards for editing articles on universities, you can consult WP:UNIV. Unfortunately there is no Chinese version." Madalibi (talk) 05:52, 16 March 2014 (UTC)]Reply

[Translation added by Madalibi: "Concerning third party, I think the Ministry of Education counts as third party, no? Also, because Chinese institutions of higher education are public [Madalibi: lit. "state-established"] organizations, data concerning them must be approved by the Ministry of Education. We can find the same kind of reference for the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and there are also third-party websites. As for copyright, if this material is used to introduce [a school], the school welcomes others to use it, and there is not copyright issues, so is this a violation? Concerning the third-party issue, you are welcome to add even more third-party data." Madalibi (talk) 05:52, 16 March 2014 (UTC)]Reply

Please write in English. Thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:32, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

You're right, Anna! I've just added translations. Too pressed for time to comment more, but I will come back. Cheers! Madalibi (talk) 05:52, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikihalper1942 (talkcontribs) 04:49, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply

[Translation and links added by Madalibi: "The vast majority is independently written, there are references, and it is perfectly formatted. By comparison, some schools that are vastly inferior to South China University of Technology in job-finding power [for graduates], for example Sun Yat-sen University and Harbin Institute of Technology, all have shanzhai content, yet nobody has deleted it. Could it be jealousy playing mischief?" Madalibi (talk) 05:52, 16 March 2014 (UTC)]Reply
