Clarification about World Cup record

The opening paragraph says that they tried to take all white, and all black teams to the 1966 and 1970 World Cups, and were then suspended in 1974. The World Cup record lower down suggests that they were banned from 1966 onwards. Could someone familiar with the situation please clarify it? Thanks. KeithD 11:10, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

I was coming here to talk about the same thing. Some research indicates that they were suspended from FIFA in 1962 re-admitted in 1963. Then in 1964 (not 1974) they were suspended again after they announced that they would send a white side to the 66 qualifiers and a black side to the 1970 qualifiers. - See - http://www.news24.com/News24/Sport/SA_2010_bid/0,,2-9-1606_1523624,00.html Jooler 10:17, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
Further research indicates that what happened was the the 1964 Conference of FIFA was in Tokyo and that the larger than normal African and Asian contingent overcame European resistance and voted to suspend them. Jooler 12:15, 13 July 2006 (UTC)

Coach

Somewhen before 1994, Dieter Widmann was Choach of the national football team. (he is now teacher in germany). Don't know, when he was there, i'll add him without date —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 217.228.24.78 (talk) 18:34, 20 March 2007 (UTC).

New Coach

Confirmed by both international press and himself, Joel Santana is the new coach. [1] [2] --201.79.218.204 (talk) 20:45, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

'09 Confederations Cup

I don't know enough about editing Wikipedia to do it myself, but in the section regarding South Africa's Confederations Cup record, the box for the 2009 tournament needs the red border that signifies that the tournament was held on home soil. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.17.2.142 (talk) 00:58, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

First international

As the first international match played by the South African football team we have a friendly against the Netherlands in 1924, but the Elo ratings web site lists before that one friendly with Argentina on 9 July 1906 (in Argentina). The South African Union wasn't created until 31 May 1910, but maybe someone can find out if FIFA considers it the first match played by the national team anyway. Kits

I think they should be reversed. The Away kit for some reason is the home kit and the home kit is the away kit. Can anyone fix this?--BeaverOtter28 (talk) 05:57, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

I fixed it (hopefully with no mistakes). See [3] for pictures of the players in the confederations cup 09. Notice that versus Brazil they are dressed in green but versus Spain they are dressed in yellow. If green was their home colour, then they would be dressed in green versus Spain. --SuperJew (talk) 14:12, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I think that the home kit's socks are incorrect, I am quite sure that they were yellow socks. I am not exactly sure how to change the colour to yellow, so can someone else please change it? Thanks Crazydude22 (talk) 09:17, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Logo at top of page

The logo which is shown is the SAFA logo. Would it not be better to replace it with the Bafana Bafana logo, those 2 stars? 41.145.254.58 (talk) 15:03, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

I would also like to replace the SAFA logo at the top of the page with the Bafana Bafana logo, as can be seen here:[4]. Crazydude22 (talk) 06:39, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

The current squad is outdated. The new one can be seen here[5]. Can someone please update the the squad? Crazydude22 (talk) 13:15, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Why isn't Steven Pienaar in the squad?74.101.124.213 (talk) 20:49, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

What the heck have people been doing with this section? Brian Baloyi is not in the squad. I will try to fix the squad myself. Crazydude22 (talk) 14:54, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

World Cup exit

"Unfortunately, even after defeating France 2-1 in their final game of the Group Stage, they failed to progress to the next round of the tournament, becoming the first host nation not to do so."

"Unfortunately" doesn't give a very objective tone. Even you read it as "unfortunately for them", which most readers won't, it's unnecessary. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.181.95.221 (talk) 10:38, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Pre 1992 teams

Was there a national football time befor 1992 like the Springboks which existed despite the boycott? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.83.125.242 (talk) 11:49, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

There were different FAs, which did sometimes select teams. I know that the 'white' FA had a team in the 1966 WC qualifiers, but it later pulled out. More should be added about these older teams though. Crazydude22 (talk) 15:57, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Bafana bafana?

Why are they called Bafana Bafana? What does that mean? --Awiseman 21:06, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Yes, in what language? Zulu? Xhosa? —Wiki Wikardo 17:07, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I think it's both... but from what I can find it's actually 'abafana'? CodeCat (talk) 02:05, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

– As noted in this post at WT:FOOTY in April 2018, it is time to once and for all to determine whether football or soccer is more widely in South Africa. At the moment we have Soccer in South Africa and the national teams article use football. There is also the albeit unreferenced section in Names for association football#Other English-speaking countries that states that In South Africa, "soccer" is the more common name. I should also point out the requested move discussion for moving the overview article to Football in South Africa was opposed back in 2011. – Ianblair23 (talk) 10:25, 17 January 2019 (UTC) --Relisting. Steel1943 (talk) 22:58, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. – Ianblair23 (talk) 10:25, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Comment - no comment on whether we should use 'football' or 'soccer' or even 'association football' - but whatever is decided, there should be uniformity. If we have Soccer in South Africa then all related articles/categories should use 'soccer'; if it's decided to keep the articles at 'football' then Soccer in South Africa should be renamed accordingly. GiantSnowman 10:34, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
100% agree with Giant Snowman's comment above. – Ianblair23 (talk) 11:07, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
Also agree, I'm neutral on the name though I strongly agree whatever the outcome that there be full uniformity. I previously opened a discussion at WP:FOOTY back in May regarding this issue, though I delayed in opening a move discussion because of the uncertainty. In the discussion, I also added a (roughly) complete list of articles which would need to be moved should 'football' or 'soccer' be chosen (though biographies created since May will be missing). S.A. Julio (talk) 02:41, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Hi Govvy, apologies. Article targets have be fixed. PS we also have Australia national soccer team and Canada men's national soccer teamIanblair23 (talk) 11:28, 17 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Comment I notified both WP:FOOTBALL and WP:ZA about this RM request. Cheers – Ianblair23 (talk) 02:33, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME, as "National Football Team" appears to be a more-used phrase than "National Soccer Team," even though soccer is the country's general disambiguator. (Though per WP:COMMONNAME we may as well rename them to Bafana Bafana :) ) SportingFlyer T·C 02:47, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Procedural comment: the proposed titles within the template and below the template do not match. Dekimasuよ! 05:31, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
Fixed. Thanks Dekimasu. Cheers – Ianblair23 (talk) 05:37, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Support. Per MOS:ENGVAR. The club "football" is also governed by the Premier Soccer League. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.15.225.128 (talk) 23:27, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Support. Ianblair23's evidence suggests that while both forms are in use, "soccer" is more common.--Cúchullain t/c 15:01, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose per GiantSnowman and Ianblair the term football clearly is in common use in South Africa, and indeed is the name used by the national federation. Per WP:RETAIN we should not be moving the article just to switch form one variety of English to another.  — Amakuru (talk) 12:53, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Upon doing the research it seems clear to me that soccer is more widely used in South Africa rather than football. This seems like a similar case to Australia where despite the national governing body having football in its name, soccer is more widely used by the South African public. This being the case I recommend that the move be made. – Ianblair23 (talk) 12:11, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

South Africa VS Argentina (1906) NOT recognized

The game VS Argentina in 1906, in which South Africa had won 1-0, is not recognized by FIFA nor AFA. So it was not official. South Africa's first international game was in 1992, when they defeated Cameroon 1-0. − 190.183.247.100 (talk) 20:14, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
