Working on my final assignment for Health Sciences Information class, as noted above

edit

Hello to all with an interest in this page.

I am a student in the Master of Information program at Rutgers University who was assigned this page in mid-October for my final project, as noted above. My tentative plans for revising this article include:

  1. Adding citations where possible;
  2. Deleting dead links, and adding new links where appropriate (when the relevant material has been moved elsewhere);
  3. Adding some current material/references;
  4. Revising header to more accurately reflect subsequent content;
  5. Fleshing out the social determinants to include more information on food access/security, employment, education, and housing.

I'll be submitting final changes for the assignment by Dec. 14th. If you have any input or information you'd like to share with me between now and then, please do so here on the Talk page. Thank you! RoxanneLIS (talk) 03:07, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

Edited lead

edit

Hi @Keithd,

I edited the lead primarily in order to incorporate all the major topic headings in the article.

I'm working on the page for a class assignment, as noted above, and will be making a few more changes. I will note subsequent changes here first.

Thanks,

Social Determinants of Health Acronym

edit

Hi @TMorata,

Just wanted to let you know that the previous version of the article first introduced an acronym for social determinants of health, but included it as SDH. I updated it to use the acronym more commonly used, as in Healthy People 2030 (US Dept of Health and Human Services), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and similar organizations.

Thanks,

Thank you, really appreciated. TMorata (talk) 12:48, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Historical development, paragraph 2

edit

Part of this paragraph needs to be rewritten. I found the report referenced (Closing the Gap in a Generation) and it identifies three major areas of focus, not two, and description of the second major area that appears in the article is problematic; i.e., it doesn't match up with the referenced material on page 2 of the report. I've rewritten it these few sentences and will be adding them in. RoxanneLIS (talk) 03:02, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Direct quote not found in cited source material

edit

This direct quotation used in the section on Economics was not found in the cited source and was therefore deleted.

The following quotation is not found in the cited source: "In the United States, 1 in 10 people live poverty, and many people cannot afford things like healthy foods, health care, and housing."

Structural Competency

edit

Understanding the social determinants of health is helpful for addressing health disparities and improving patient outcomes. Structural competency offers a framework for healthcare professionals to recognize and respond to the underlying social and economic structures that contribute to health inequalities. By integrating structural competency, practitioners can engage more effectively with issues of stigma and inequality, fostering a more equitable healthcare environment.
