In this class, we’ll begin by asking important questions about the nature of medical and health information: What is it? Who creates it? Who uses it, and for what purposes? How do we go about finding it? What methods do we use to assess its credibility? By the end of the course, students will be able to: (1) Understand the basic environment of a health sciences reference or information services department. (2) Search health sciences information resources using systematic search techniques. (3) Use the basic biomedical reference sources to answer factual questions. (4) Effectively communicate information about the health sciences. (5) Assess the quality of systematic reviews using critical appraisal tools. The students will engage in a semester-long Wikipedia project that applies what they learn about searching the medical literature, appraising systematic reviews, and translating medical information for lay audiences by choosing a health or medicine related article to edit and update with current literature. We will also read about Wikipedia as a health information resource throughout the semester.
