Soft redirect to IMDb

edit

IMDbname is a listed interwiki link at M:Interwiki map so this should be OK to do. I haven't seen it done before so I don't know whether or not this breaks some rule I am not aware of. Geraldo Perez (talk) 00:04, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Contested deletion

edit

This article should not be speedy deleted as having no substantive content, because per the criteria Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#A3 "Any article (other than disambiguation pages, redirects, or soft redirects)... ". This is a soft redirect. --Geraldo Perez (talk) 00:35, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Note. Page was deleted then restored as A3 is not valid for a soft redirect. Geraldo Perez (talk) 00:52, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

This page should not be speedily deleted because CSD R2 applies to normal redirects, not soft redirects. Soft redirects were created specifically for interwiki links. This is not a cross namespace redirect as prohibited by R2. It is a WP:soft redirect to another site, a whole other thing. --Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:03, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

It is my understanding that Soft Redirects are used to forward to Wikipedia projects, not unrelated websites. If this this is wrong, please explain. Thanks... reddogsix (talk) 01:07, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
That much is true, but as Mr. Perez points out, IMDbName is listed at M:Interwiki map, which would (I think) make it eligible? I'm not supremely knowledgeable about this topic. I'm just bringing that point back to the fore as relevant. - Vianello (Talk) 01:09, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
(ec)Given that IMDbName is in the list at M:Interwiki map, it looks to me like it is considered equivalent to another wikipedia project, not some random external site. That is why the soft redirect template worked. As I noted above, I haven't seen this done before so it may be an invalid use, as you noted. I would rather this be discussed at WP:RfD than speedy to get a reading on what others think. Geraldo Perez (talk) 01:17, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
To add, it is my understanding that the main namespace (content) of other wikis is considered as main namespace and a soft redirect from wikipedia main namespace to another wiki main namespace is not a cross-namespace redirect for the purposes of R2.
