Tsunami

Is the name of the band is the normal Welsh for Tsunami, or is it a made-up word that sounds the same? Verbcatcher (talk) 00:00, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

I think Welsh uses the Japanese word too (tsunami) for the big wave. 'Sŵn' is Welsh for 'sound' so I expect Sŵnami is a made up name, intended to sound like 'tsunami'. Sionk (talk) 18:39, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
It would be good to provide pronunciation guidance for those unfamiliar with Welsh. Are we confident that the band's name is pronounced the same as the English pronunciation of Tsunami? Is so then, based on Tsunami, I suggest one of these:
  1. (pronounced /tsˈnɑːmi/) – (coded as {{IPAc-en|t|s|uː|ˈ|n|ɑː|m|i}} )
  2. (pronounced [tsuːˈnɑːmi]) – (coded as {{IPA|cy|tsuːˈnɑːmi|}} )
  3. (pronounced the same as tsunami)
I have only limited knowledge of IPA for English, and none of any differences in IPA for Welsh. Here I favour specifying the English IPA alphabet (first option), as the {{IPAc-en}} template generates hover-over help, and the English IPA is sourced in the Tsunami article. Comments please. Well, Sŵnami doesn't have a 't' and I'm fairly sure the Welsh is pronounced with a shorter 'a' than the English pronounciation. I'll have to wait till I hear them on the radio to double-check. Sionk (talk) 22:39, 23 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
I've listened to a couple of interviews on YouTube and their name is definitely pronounced like 'tsunami' (without the 't'). So I'd say (pronounced /sˈnɑːmi/) would be accurate. Sionk (talk) 10:08, 30 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Do English speakers prounce the T? I have never heard that. Also, I have an interview that backs up the suggestion that their name is a play on words if that is worth adding to the article. M.T.S.W.A. (talk) 16:54, 22 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
The Tsunami article indicates a 't', and I think I pronounce a vestigial 't'. If you can cite a reliable source that clarifies the source of the name then please add this. Verbcatcher (talk) 04:04, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand the point of this conversation. The band's name is Sŵnami, not Tsunami. Sionk (talk) 18:44, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Some dictionaries say Pining, the band's social media says "languishing", and another dictionary says "longing". Who can we trust as a source on this occasion? M.T.S.W.A. (talk) 18:17, 11 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
